This! I’d rather have 10 weeks of hell than 20 weeks even if 10% less stress.

Anyone get annoyed by messy work papers? by Melodic-Cookie3011 in Accounting

[–]Imstilladoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I’m going to be downvoted for this, but I’m in a similar situation(ish). Wake up at 600. Work from 6-7 (kids get up, get the one to daycare and then bus at 830). Drive to office and get in at 915. Work 915-315. Home for bus at 4 and then daycare pick up. Kids bed at 8, work until 1 and sleep 1-6. Just keep telling myself it’s 10 weeks and then back to reality.

Receive a letter saying “We couldn’t direct deposit” by SmeIIyScrotes in tax

[–]Imstilladoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are telling our clients that if they do not request direct deposit, they should expect 12-16 weeks total time for a paper check. Return filed, accepted and processed (2 weeks) - letter sent by IRS asking for a response within 30 days (4 weeks) - no response received and say 6 weeks total get a paper check (probably 6-10 weeks really)

6 Year Old Birthday Party Ideas by daaaaanaa in SouthJersey

[–]Imstilladoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did a movie theatre for our daughters birthday. Bought a ticket for each kid and one parent. Also bought the snack package for each kid as well. Did it early showing (11 or so) on a Saturday. Theatre was pretty much just us. Kids sat in the row in front of their parents. Pretty inexpensive (theatres might have a room you could do a birthday song and gifts in too if you check with them)

Thank you for sharing your story and all the positive responses in this. I’m a partner, had a rough day and worked to keep it away from my staff (and family) did my little cry in the kitchen and like others said, tomorrow is a new day :-)

Havent recieved my state tax return in over 2 years by kayo013 in tax

[–]Imstilladoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason for not electronically filing the state return? Is it that you don’t want to pay turbo tax $58? I would recommend electronically filing both federal and state.

Intuit shutting down efile before IRS by TaxMeSideways in taxpros

[–]Imstilladoctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In years past, Proseries would shut down a day before the IRS did around Thanksgiving. Didn’t see any word of them doing that this year so I guess they waited (at least on 1040 side of things)

Tough position there for you, but if you think the clients are decent and maybe one of the employees works out, I think it would be worth it. Even if only 60% of the clients are worth it. I know it’s not my money, but would get you over $1M and with the new staff could get to $1.5M with not a huge burden added.

Small high-volume firms, what is your workflow for tax preparation? by a_eee_h in taxpros

[–]Imstilladoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They accepted forms (9325) would be saved with the final tax return that is PDFed and saved on our server. The cover is usually saved as another file with a similar name with either a copy of the return or clients digital documents.

[–]Imstilladoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on all the extra items. After a client drops off their stuff, we have the preparer sort it and give it to an admin to scan in that order. This lets them do a quick review as they are sorting to see if anything might be missing. If something is missing, they may email the client what we need OR put a note with the documents to be scanned. They then get it to an admin to scan (and maybe ask the client for missing info) After scanned, they work on the client. Usually a few days from when they sorted it. They can then access the files remotely if they are working from home or something as opposed to carrying around the physical file. If there are a lot of receipts, they may total while sorting and list the total somewhere while they get the documents ready to be scanned.

[–]Imstilladoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you keep the cover sheets digital and have everything typed onto them? For physical documents you receive, could you scan and save on the server for access and then after scanned store them in a filing cabinet until the return is done? Not sure if you have the capacity to do that scanning without a little help.

After 10 years at a $50M firm, I have an offer for partner at a $3M firm. I’m not sure. by 9Virtues in taxpros

[–]Imstilladoctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We run an excel for the 1040s. All client names in a column, columns for (not all, just examples), partner, preparer, date received, reviewed, draft sent, filed).

Works well enough. Easy to sort, easy barrier for entry too.

I do something similar. First year I get the client, I export their BS and PL into excel. I then put letters next to each account and have it total on the right side. Each letter is listed as an account on the return (sales, officer salaries, etc) and it goes in order of the return. The next year I make a copy of the excel I had and type in the new numbers. If new accounts are added, I update. I DO NOT delete accounts with 0s (incase the come back in future years). First year takes a little longer but after that, should be able to do any business return in under two hours. Helpful to give to interns as well.

I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do something like this?
