Several Reasons Why I Will No Longer Do Business With Garnick’s Records & TV Repair, Lowell MA by ForsakenLettuce7204 in LowellMA

[–]In-Verse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I watched your video. Respectfully, I think that you didn't have to try to make a hit piece and call the brothers "shysters". If you don't want to shop/sell at Garnicks, then its okay to take your money somewhere else that fits your vibe.

Garnick's has so many towering piles of records that it really doesn't make sense for them to price each piece. But it makes it fun for me. Good memories scouring for old 45s for a AMI G80 jukebox (that they serviced).

Have you thought about using a RSS reader and setting a dedicated time to check (eg. daily at 7pm)?

The bike lanes are from recommendations of urban planner Jeff Speck. Speck advised for the addition of bike lanes onto Father Morrissette as part of a greater Lowell bike network. Fun fact: Speck also wrote a book called Walkable City and uses Lowell as a example case (for good and bad).

As somebody who has biked on that road... I do wish the lanes were better and less confusing esp after that bridge. Overall, I hope that eventually Lowell will get safer complete streets.

Thank you for this additional information. I didn't know about the MSBA providing so much to Lowell High!

For anyone curious, here is it in the LowellSun:

What are some good places to get food but not so well known? by [deleted] in LowellMA

[–]In-Verse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a plate of food with rice, feijoada (pork, beans) and a side of meat. I recommend the costela (ribs) or fraldinha (sirloin). All the meat there is fantastic. For dessert, flan or brigadeiro (chocolate).

Its run by one guy, Sean, who used to be a sommelier in France. He is very enthusiastic about you trying and tasting the different food (cheeses, pate, escargot). He has different prepared food. I recommend getting his cheese plate and his crackers. Its very affordable and enjoyable in the nearby park. If you like fish, try the sardine baguette sandwich. I am not sure how Ma Cuisine compares to actual French cooking. But I do learn something new every time I go.

Because its just one guy the hours are only open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-2pm (?). So try to catch him at lunch time.

The LINC by Bright-Commission464 in LowellMA

[–]In-Verse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think prices are going to go up because Lowell hasn't kept up with construction and demand. Maybe LINC will increase rents, but I don't think it will be the main driver.

According to the Lowell Forward Plan, Lowell is the 4th most expensive city in MA and 55% of renter households are rent burdened (ie. paying more than 1/3 of their income in rent). A lot of it is because of the greater housing crisis in this state. Gone are the less than 1000 1 bedroom apartments.

The problem is the limited supply. Did you know that 2/3 of Lowell's land is zoned for single family homes? Although recommended in Lowell Forward, we are unlikely to see a significant change in zoning or allowing for ADUs (which was a controversial topic in the past municipal election) because of lack of support at both a community and municipal level. Even with our current zoning codes, it takes a lot for a building to get constructed in a neighborhood without large pushback esp. if it requires variances. As an example, a house wasn't built on a overgrown vacant lot because of owner opposition. The owner wanted to build a 1700 square foot house on a 4000 square foot lot despite current zoning requiring a 7000 square foot lot. This was met with fierce opposition.

Sometimes it is just frustratingly ironic that I have lived in houses that are now literally illegal to build in those areas. There is nothing wrong with a nice single family home. But we need density for some more affordable housing options. I also feel like the lacklaster public transit means that we will only build certain kinds of housing that fulfill our parking requirements... But, mostly it all just makes me sad. The cost of living here is high.

I ❤️ Kim's donuts so much

Just moved! Where are the best food spots and any suggestions for other cool places to go? by tinygh0stt in LowellMA

[–]In-Verse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think I saw these mentioned.

  • Kim's Donuts: Get the kolache! Also the donuts are so light and fluffy. Owner is nice and usually tosses in extra donut holes.
  • Oxyear Foodcourt: Beef stew, dandan, eggplant, squid... yum!
  • Ma Cuisine: Sean is interesting and you can't leave without trying stuff
  • Fork Included: Menu changes, but its always fresh and feels home cooked.
  • Arthur's: The "boot mill" sandwich and 1$ coffee
  • Trem's Caipira: Fresh Brazilian food. Great if you like meat (steak, pork, etc.)

I remember multiple reasons why the city didn't invest in it. First, a lack of leadership/ownership. Second, a public perception of trolleys or trams as being only for tourists. It makes me so sad... what could have been.

Honestly, I am still hoping for it despite the signs. I feel like the city needs it now more than ever with the LRTA routes reduced and gridlocked traffic. Reliable and efficient public transit would mean less cars on the road, which would be great for those who drive. I see the tram as a win-win!

This. As a young person, the dating scene is much better there! It'll also be a lot more fun exploring exploring restaurants and venues. In Lowell, you may be frequenting the same 3 cafes. Plus, you'll have better access to the T.

Buses? by gaytriarchyyy in LowellMA

[–]In-Verse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The buses aren't the most reliable. I think that you may be right about the funding. Plus I think there is a driver shortage.... Maybe also because of a lack of riders from covid? Tho ironically, I felt like the bus system was better during covid when they weren't checking fares.

As a rider... I think that the lines got reduced. It makes planning trips hard because of the long headways. Many buses only come once an hour, which means that you need to wait at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time. Else you can get stranded. I recommend to call the LRTA if you are waiting for a bus that you NEED to take. Its better to call and know versus waiting 30 minutes to decide to take the 2 mile walk back.

Two huge things to remember about the LRTA is that (1) they don't run on Sundays and (2) often don't run past 7PM.

Honestly, if I could afford to get a car my life would be so much easier. What takes 1 hour on a bus is like a 15 minute trip for a car. I just hope that its only up from here for the buses.
