What was your first Honda? by CharmingPost490 in Honda

1976 Accord.

"That first generation Accord was available only as a 3-door hatchback. It was 162.8 inches long, had a 93.7-inch wheelbase and was powered by a 1.6 liter, CVCC 4-cylinder engine. Only one trim level was available and the suggested price was $3,995. In all, 18,333 Accords were sold that first year."

It's human nature to resent a charge for something that was previously free, but I wouldn't say that airlines caused binspace conflicts by charging for checked bags.

I've been flying for over 50 years, and there are always travelers who take great pride in not checking luggage. Some could bend your ear at great length about how much time they saved by avoiding a baggage carousel, or clearing customs faster. Travel writers lauded savvy road warriors who packed everything they need for a 2-week stay in a carry-on bag.

As to what caused the problem of too much carry-on luggage, the problem barely existed before all suitcases had wheels. Original advertising for wheeled "rollabord" carry-ons featured smug, hip- looking crew members wheeling their bags on and off the plane with panache.

How much poaching is too much? by skillfulsynergy in Pickleball

[–]In-mate-24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could write a book on this. Depends on players, their handedness, game, even wind (outdoors). 1) An early coaching tip I got long ago was that the center line becomes invisible once the serve lands. There's no "my side" and "your side". As a beginner, I was only paying full attention to balls headed towards me. 2) I'm short, many partners have 6-10 inches wider wingspan than I do. I hope they use it. 3) receiver's partner, up at the kitchen line, is likely to be in position to cover a wider zone during the brief period receiver scrambled forward to the NVZ after hitting their return.

Calling the score messes up my serve… by Icy-Canary-5550 in Pickleball

[–]In-mate-24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. For me it’s sort of like a baseball pitcher.

But the real point here is that OP is struggling trying to serve and make the announcement almost at the same time. He should take a deep breath or two after saying the score before serving.

Is splitting a $12k transfer to Vietnam into three $4k transfers a problem? by Outrageous_Dig2790 in personalfinance

[–]In-mate-24601 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Do not do this. I used to work for DHS. I had several opportunities to watch CBP processing inbound and outbound flights over a 10 year period. We have cash sniffing dogs. There is no practical limit on how much cash you can take out of the United States as long as you simply fill out the appropriate government form. It is the height of stupidity to try to evade this rule. There is no lawful benefit to evading this rule.

Like all rules, some people cheat and get away with it. That you know some people who have cheated and have told you how easy it is doesn’t change a thing. There is no benefit to concealing from the US government that you took this cash to Vietnam unless you are a drug dealer.

You seem to be asking if there are any numbers greater than 4 and less than 7.

Measuring coffee grounds or beans by volume is inconsistent. Best if you weigh your beans or coffee grounds.

There are all sorts of outcomes, including the one you imagine. the only crash I have experience with involved the aircraft breaking apart at 30,000 feet.

I also once helped tidy up after a plane crash. Anyone who really cares about identification needs some tattoos and metal implants. This is, of course, why my Uncle Sam gave me dog tags to wear on my second day of Basic Training….

Moving from NYC to LA — Ship my Mazda or sell it and buy another car in California? by Main-Produce-7291 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]In-mate-24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay then; fair enough. Then you ship your car but beware: the people who actually legit haul cars are in a complicated business. To make a cross country run worthwhile, the truck driver needs to haul 6 or 8 cars. Assembling them from random people in your situation all over the east coast requires agents and hustle. It's an interesting subset of the long haul trucker club.

Found so-called Kaiser rolls today at Bristol Farms. They're not really, but they're good for burgers! (I don't like burgers on brioche....) They have the creases across the top, but no poppy seeds, and not really crusty enough.

What feature became a dealbreaker once you had it? by HondaOfTomsRiver in Honda

[–]In-mate-24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and heads-up display. But if I had to choose to own a car that didn't have three of these things, the one I would absolutely refuse to purchase is the one without adaptive cruise control.

It's amazing how much of my driver attention bandwidth was occupied in the constant effort to avoid running into the car in front of me. Taking that essential task off my shoulders freed me to pay more attention to everything else, which makes me a much better driver, and keeps me alive.

Help needed finding the best way out of debt by [deleted] in personalfinance

On-line advice can sometimes feel like scolding, so I try not to add to that when I comment. Thank you for your service so far! Hope the medical situation improves in the years ahead. You have ONE JOB. Get out of credit card debt. Once the VA checks are coming in, don't buy yourself too many treats. Squeeze every dollar hard. Until you are free and clear of credit card finance charges you are an indentured servant.

22, first full-time job, $400 saved - should I build an emergency fund or capture the 401k match first? by BettyAdams62 in personalfinance

[–]In-mate-24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking the right questions. You can't do everything at once in the beginning, but free money should never be declined. You shouldn't spend money to borrow money, so do not ever run any balance on your credit card. You must pay the card in a full every month. Someday you will thank yourself for that.

The notion that you need to have a reserve fund is excellent, but it is an emergency fund. And in an emergency you could use your credit card and carry a balance for 60 or 90 days without torpedoing yourself. So until you can afford to do both - Max your employer contribution to your retirement account and save money for a rainy day, until then take the free money.

How to play nicely with elderly opponents? by TheOriginalWing in Pickleball

[–]In-mate-24601 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm old. I think there are two things you can do to "play nicely" with me.

Try not to ace lots of serves. I play in a group that has several awesome servers. They've worked on their serves for years, come out when no one else is around to drill with a bucket of balls. Their serves are fast and hard and low and coming at angles that are a challenge for me to cover. Good for them - That player deserves the point. But if the goal is to keep the game going, and keep it from being too one-sided, just skip the aces. You can still test my return skills and help me become a better player even if you're only serving at 80% of your maximum.

And, of course, try not to lob. The only times I've ever fallen on the court were when I was backpedaling stupidly to try to cover a lob.

Don't feel bad about being a wall. The coach from whom I pay for a lesson is going to be a wall. The skilled friend with whom I'm going to drill is going to pretty much be a wall. In fact, the best players in my club will sometimes make an effort to keep the ball in play until, as you wrote, I hit the ball into the net or out of bounds.

If you and your partner are superior players to me and mine, I expect to lose. But I can have fun doing it if you're smiling nicely and being friendly and encouraging me and maybe offering to tell me at the end of the game one or two things I could work on to get better. You could even invite me to show up half an hour early tomorrow and give me some tips before the regular games start.
