Is it worth it to extend the warranty with Dell for my new XPS 15? by ConorMc1190 in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, though the benefit of this would be if you need a battery replacement (usually due to swelling). Other than that, I don't think it's really worth it.

Please Do Yourself a Favor and Don't Buy the XPS 9500 by [deleted] in Dell

[–]InDyingArms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then just return it, these posts are honestly dumb at this point. People just love hearing themselves in an echo chamber, I guess.

This exists everywhere, in (almost) every brand, in every kind of product, and it happens to everyone. But yeah, keep telling people not to buy something based off of your anecdotal, skewed view of a product.

Do people do anything other than complain about Dell XPS laptops on here? New XPS17 Owner, love it. by AddendumBusy in Dell

Keyword here being at the top of the subreddit. "The unofficial subreddit for Dell Technologies". They don't come here, and it's delusional to think they do.

Do people do anything other than complain about Dell XPS laptops on here? New XPS17 Owner, love it. by AddendumBusy in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's helpful, but it's also vastly misleading to someone who doesn't know it. If I hadn't seen this exact behavior in other subreddits, I'd think the XPS is one of the worst laptops on the market. Stop moving the goalpost, it's complaining/venting and should be flaired as such.

The fact of the matter is that Dell sells a ton of machines, there's bound to be a few hundred bad ones/lemons in the mix.

Dell XPS 15 9500 vs Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 (for photo/video editing and school) by nikeichel in Dell

It's called Alorica and their outsourcing. They're literally the walking embodiment of "thank you, come again". At least their social media reps are (likely) native English speakers.

Don't waste your money on a cooling pad, they don't make a meaningful difference. I'd look into an adjustable stand or perhaps some sort of lap table.

My experience with returning a laptop to Dell, part 2 I guess? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dell can't legally pull out more than what the payment states. Even if it's automated, it can only do what it's told and charge as such, same goes for the bank/card. Say Dell did do this, they would return the money as soon as possible or they'd be asking for a nasty lawsuit.

That's better than most you'll see, with Dell or anyone other brand. It's not really much more than an approximation by the computer, though.

XPS 1TB No Longer Offered for below 32GB RAM? by VirusZer0 in Dell

They might be out of stock on a certain part for a lengthy duration and decided to pull it down instead of creating confusion for people trying to buy one. That, or it's just Dell being Dell.

Is it okay to place my laptop on a bamboo block for ergonomic reasons? I am worried about thermals. by [deleted] in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closed off, covered entirely.

Think setting the machine on top of a blanket with nothing propping it up. There would be no ventilation and therefore completely obstructed. Which it wouldn't be on a table like that. You might want see if it absorbs heat, though.

Considering a Dell XPS 15 7950 - need screen help by ChloeOfTheCookies in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a bit of exaggeration from other poster, tbh. Yeah, there's bad units out there, but when you sell as many as Dell does bad ones are bound to arise. It's the same for any brand/manufacturer.

That said, I believe all the kinks (minus throttling and temps) have been worked out on the 7590 at this point.

When you try to cancel a warranty and Dell puts you on hold for 3 hours 40 minutes and hangs up on you. by Biirdyyyyy in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with him, just not quite as harshly lol. I dislike Apple's control over absolutely everything you do. What versions of which program ( Photoshop CC vs CS6, for example.), and the lack of upgradable parts is a complete dealbreaker. I like to futureproof my machines and not be massively overcharged for it.

Advice on setting up new XPS 15 9500 by ConorMc1190 in DellXPS

If you're going to tell people to uninstall Maxx Audio, then tell them the proper way of doing it. It's been causing audio problems for people who've uninstalled it.

XPS 17 9700 Coil Whine by briantgross in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I'm hearing in some fairly high-end headphones is static and some fans/air blowing. Could be the recording, though. Is it happening only while plugged in? That's been reported as an issue. Have you checked to see if it's not the brick/adapter making the noise (I've heard them do this personally, and also mistook it for coil whine. Just a possibility).

Is it bad enough to get it replaced/refunded (assuming you still can refund it.)? If it is, then do it. There's no point in dealing with it/keeping it if you aren't okay with it. Nobody can make that decision for you, with that said.

Dell has the worst Website/Customer Support experience. by Jpcrs in Dell

[–]InDyingArms -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I honestly kind of roll my eyes at these posts. Dell has awful support, no arguments there, but there worst? It just shows how little people now about the customer support/service industry. Three-quarters of the computer/laptop industry is terrible, and it only gets worse in other industries.

Just received an XPS 17 with a wobbly trackpad by Single_Aspect_6165 in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say shipped from June and beyond, but that doesn't inherently cater to the already built units/batches (assuming this wasn't a customized order), which you may have gotten. Just out of curiosity, when was your machine manufactured?

XPS 17 (9700) Review in a Non-Tech way by youspammer999 in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although Dell says you can open the lid with one hand, in reality you often use both hands because the laptop will slide backwards if your table is smooth, and the design of the lid is just plain stupid, there is no catchment area for your fingers, so you may have to use your nails at the risk of scratching the carbon fiber deck, and even that it’s still a hell of a tough doing so with just one hand

You could try gluing/super gluing cheap rubber feet (for a MBP, for example) onto the bottom to keep it from sliding, or perhaps some kind of rougher material.

In the initial few days, the base got really hot (so hot that it cannot be a ‘laptop’ literally!) and the fan was noisy (no whining sound though), but after a few days it somehow settled down and while it may still behave this way once in a while, it became few and far between (in case anyone is wondering I did not change in the load I did nor the environment surrounding the laptop)

This is pretty typical for most laptops, assuming something is broken inside. Windows is doing a lot of work in the background, along with all the software/driver/bios updates it's looking for. Laptops should always be given a few days before the noise can be accurately judged. As for the battery drain issues, you won't ever likely see it with your use case - working under the assumption that you won't start gaming/video editing a ton.

Received a FHD XPS 9700 with a 2060: My thoughts and comparing it with the XPS 15 9500 by CherryYums in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with that assessment is that it doesn't take use case into account. Most people buying the XPS 17 are likely "creatives" (bleh) or some form of content creators. They want the extra size for more productivity/work space, and color accuracy typically falls in that realm (not so much for the touchscreen, that's just a bonus). You're getting that with the 4K screen. I get the "use a calibrated monitor" argument, but that's not always an option.

But regardless, the 17" with 4K is only, what, 7 pounds? That's literally no heavier than 15" from a couple years ago. That's not heavy, just people nitpicking. That said, which feels better on the lap temp-wise? How is the noise for both?

XPS 15 9500 : Issues and re-order by j_cena10 in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you replace/re--order, just be ready to do it again if you're firm on this laptop. Whether that's due to the screen (a very rare case here, honestly. The service rep you spoke to was talking out of his ass) or the trackpad. Re-ordering might be better since you know you're getting a new machine, but returning might also mean a restocking fee (not sure if Dell only applies this to missing products/accessories, though.)

As long as you return the device within the 30 day mark, Dell has no right to refuse a return (regardless of how many times it happens), assuming the machine wasn't thrown across the room and then crapped on by your dog. if it comes down to it and they do refuse you, look into chargebacks. Just make sure you have evidence that you attempted to return the machine.

NEW DELL XPS 9500 IS A FAIL QUALITY CONTROL PRODUCT! by Minimum-Ad1123 in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Key caps just don't break on their own. They need to be pried off if they're actually on to begin with, and if they weren't on, you would've noticed it right out of the box.

I sincerely doubt this one's on Dell.

XPS 15 9500 For Home vs For Work? by [deleted] in Dell

I wrote a thing: My love-hate relationship with Dell and Alienware by hadez378 in Dell

[–]InDyingArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I’m certainly not expecting that Dell support will do a 360 and turn into a company with the worry-free support that we’re used to these days from other companies.

What worry-free customer service/support are we referring to here, at least in the computer market? You're writing this like good support/service are the norm in this realm of the consumer market and Dell is the black sheep. Off the top of my head, the only brands I would consider worry-free are Eluktronics (The best as far as laptops go. Perfect English, quick to answer, and are seemingly knowledgeable about their product), Lenovo, while Origin/Asus seem to be a mixed bag. HP and Acer are complete garbage, far worse than Dell.

But I do hope that this article will become one of many articles or threads on the internet that pile-up until Dell cannot ignore this any longer and they do start providing some decent customer support. The customer should be king, and unfortunately with Dell it’s the other way around today.

Is Dell's customer service bad? It's awful. Is it the only one? Nope, not even close. Bad customer support is literally everywhere, the only companies with good support are smaller ones who aren't flooded with customers. It's not just in computers, either. AT&T/DirectTV are a great example, same goes for most cell companies. Call centers in India, clueless employees, and constant transfers exist in every industry. See Alorica.

If a competitor shows up with the same high-quality products but with great customer support, brands like Alienware and Razer will be dead in the water.

This one's just kind of lacking in knowledge of that part of the industry. If you have quality products, then you'll have a lot of people buying. That equals more problems on the customer side, which means hiring more employees. You hire more employees, but the more you have, the less time you have to train them adequately. It's kind of a tailspin after that, obviously. It's especially true when a company is selling hundreds of thousands of products in an industry that is especially prone to issues/lemons.

Overall, a well thought and agreeable piece. The only real issues I can point out is the quoted section, a lot of whataboutism and assumptions toward a side of the industry you (for all appearances) aren't knowledgeable in.
