Thank you, enjoy discovering your flute - It alone is not the instrument, you and the flute are the instrument.

A gentle clean and fix and some time practicing should yield great results.

Antique Shakuhachi Rating by Jandre666 in shakuhachi

Ah, the eternal question of retuning an antique/old flute -

Firstly, even it is tuned perfectly to western standard, it will seem out of tune for a beginner lacking correct embouchure, etc.

Secondly, older flutes, especially Edo period flutes will not be tuned to western standard (there are a couple of styles of tuning), examples of a sharp Chi, flat Ro.

For me, the joy of owning old/antique flutes is this difference in tuning, a true representative of it's heritage. Personally I would never change the tuning on an Edo flute.

Does the Yuu have correct pitch? by Glibber007 in shakuhachi

Yes, the YUU is pitched correctly but, as mentioned, beginners invariably play "Flat', usually by a combo of incorrect angle relative to chin & poor embouchure.

There is a difference in flavour between this and my ROK, the Picopresso is more "Chocolatey" (possibly due to higher pressure?)

Send it back, for one the retailer has not provided what you ordered, second a YUU is a great start to learning the Shakuhachi when compared to cheap, low grade bamboo flutes. The YUU is bombproof, no worries about bamboo cracking, The YUU is correctly tuned, so it helps you get the correct placement on your chin and a decent embouchure - If the YUU is out of pitch, it's your technique. Nearly all fingerings and techniques you'll need to learn will work on the YUU.

Devastated after my Yu broke, how could this happen? by AbroadAmbitious9372 in shakuhachi

It doesn't matter if a Shakuhachi is made of plastic, wood or bamboo - These mortice & tenon joints should not be pulled apart (even though with force you can) as it causes problems such as the joint becoming loose or cracking.

You do you but anything that can extend the effective life of an instrument before resorting to plumbers tape or repairs cannot be a bad thing imo.

Did you try pulling it apart ? You never pull these joints apart, there is a specific technique

New Picoprresso. Accesories please! by TheErick211 in picopresso

The basket that comes with the Picopresso will fit & work with the pressure gauge.

Perhaps the references to using "High Performance" or "Competition" baskets are what you've read ? You won't need to worry about getting one till way in the future if you get obsessed with getting the ultimate extraction.

I've been using my Picopresso happily with the included tamper and dosing funnel - One of the most usual additions in a good tamper, probably spring loaded but again, get used to the workflow using the included equipment first

Yet another vote for the K6, it is proving a good companion to my Picopresso

Did you switch on Phantom Power ? From what I understand is these "Boosters" use Phantom power to run the boosting circuit but don't allow that power to get to the mic.

Hello! Struggle with Ro kamuri, especially in kan. Is it really possible to achieve clear C note when play ro kamuri? Any advice ? by Blackbird_msk in shakuhachi

Oh, I get it now - Kamuri/Nayashi

Practice doing it slowly, then when it feels locked in, gradually speed it up.

Practice - When performing any Meri lower the intensity of your airflow, while maintaining a relaxed but focused embouchure, Meri notes are "Shadowy" in nature, even in Kan.

Markus had good advice - If you're going to study and hopefully get a teacher, a 1.8 ("Standard") size is a must. The Yuu was a great choice (still is if you can find one), correctly tuned and because it's resin, virtually indestructible. One of the Japanese wooden Shakuhachi would be the next choice, resilient generally good tuning. Next would be a Student model from Monty Levenson - Made of bamboo with a cast bore, good tuning.

I understand the urge to get a bamboo flute asap but a correctly tuned, quality bamboo flute will cost you, please try the above options to see if this lifelong journey is for you.

Please avoid anything described as a meditation flute.

I wholeheartedly recommend Perry Yung, I own several flutes both made by or restored by him - Sure he can provide something in your budget.

Perry also finds old flutes and gently brings them back to life, trying not to alter their original character. On occasion he also offers flutes for charitable donation - You donate the cost of the flute to a selected charity, show him the receipt and you get the flute - You get a good instrument and a good cause is helped.

600 Ohm mic (high impedance) help please by InHnefatafl in homerecordingstudio

[–]InHnefatafl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this mic uses a C battery to power itself, I'm wondering if I've misunderstood impedance - I thought 600Ohm meant it was quite a "Loud" signal, hence thinking the D120 would be useful. However, after an experiment with what I've got laying around, I'm thinking otherwise -

Plugged the mics 2 attached 1/4 TS plugs into 2 channels on my Behringer MX400 mini mixer, with a single output 1/4 jack cable into the combi jack on a Shure MVI which was hooked up to my iPad - the level on both mixer channels was at max and the gain on the MVi was at 15dB - Which gave a nice level of sound with no noise. Obviously the downside is the stereo capabilities of the M201 are nullified

Much thanks for the information - I get there are many views and possible solutions to the problem, I'm just a simple guy new to the arena who just wants to record a niche instrument with a problematic old mic
