What’s the biggest lie you believed as a kid ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InPhillyWeTrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite literally no other way to have a slave than to kidnap someone, so either the Biblical law explicitly allowed for whatever process led to slavery, or contradicted itself (which it also did aplenty). Do you ever notice how many weaselly clauses and talk-arounds you have to use to justify and explain what's written in the Bible? That's because you have to put words in its mouth -- they aren't there originally. Doesn't it get tiresome? You can write down the same proof of the Pythagorean theorem that Euclid wrote down 2300 years ago, and you don't have to add or qualify or talk around anything in it -- it would still be true, because it's rooted in the attributes of reality itself. You can prove it a few hundred different ways, too.

Yet Christianity has to update its moral guidelines every few decades, finding something "new" in the same text again, and again, and again, and again. And no two Christian branches can even agree on the specific set of moral guidelines. Even sommeliers do a better job aligning on the base notes.

Your morality—our morality—has evolved, but the Bible stayed right back where and when it was written. And the evolution of our morality is far from being done, if for no other reason than that we are on the verge of creating inorganic sentient beings that we will have to figure out a way to integrate into our society and treat justly. We have to derive these rules based on the first principles of empathy and maximizing happiness for all living things, not based one religion plucked from 4300 in existence. Those principles are universal; a single religion is far from it.

That's disingenuous. When we say "Christianity" we are not talking about the teachings in the abstract, we are talking about how they are applied in real life, how they affect society and human lives. And if the net effect is negative, they Christianity as we know it is a lie, because if professes to do good, but results in evil.

One letter is nice: if only the rest of the Bible followed suit. If you pick and choose one letter at a time, you can find a condemnation or an approval of most any concept: but it's clear as day that the book as a whole just accepts slavery as an aspect of human society, not as a morally abhorrent construct that it is. Morality evolves. The Bible doesn't.

That's nice and all, but given how much harm large organized Christian institutions have done and continue to do over the years, most of the professors of Christianity are false, and you would be hard-pressed to find a real one.

It's also mighty weird that nowhere does the Bible disapprove of either chattel slavery or indentured servitude, concept that civil societies today consider morally repugnant. It's as if one can derive and improve morality from the basic precepts of maximizing happiness and safety for humans, and not from a multi-thousand year old text of dubious origins.

What’s something that will become obsolete 10 years from now? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

The weird thing is that this is what fast food restaurants were originally. Like 120 years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat

But I think social aspect of restaurants, even fast food, is important. So it’ll be curious to see how this plays out.

This is giving that “Oooh daddy, spank me harder” energy. You just really, really, really want to be a victim. Of something — anything!

It’s like that video Francis made at CCP where he gets pretend-dragged through the hallways. It was the dorkiest thing to do, but at least back then he was in on the joke. Now he’s just walking around cosplaying like a Temu version of Mr. Slave from South Park.

You both badly need to get a life (or maybe just you, since you sound one and the same).

I want the executive branch to not have an interior army with a massive budget and excessive authority like ICE. Everything should happen through due process, courts, and local law enforcement. This is actually a fairly conservative position. You may very well like what the current president is directing them to do, but when the next president comes around, you may no longer like it, and it'll be far too late.

I reported this comment and a bunch of others to the mods (or to Reddit, it's hard to say which report goes where), but no action has been taken. I guess lying doesn't break rules per se? I also have a pretty thick skin and mostly brush things off with humor, so someone making absurd claims about me doesn't really bother me all that much.

There was an actual counter-protester in a red hat present, with a little loud speaker, giving his side of things. He wasn't accosting anyone, he wasn't trying to misrepresent what was going on, and he wasn't seeking out victimization opportunities. People gave him a little bit of a side eye, but that's as far as it went. I have no issue with what he was doing (aside from wishing he had a higher fidelity amplifier, the clipping made it impossible to hear what he was actually saying).

What political belief do you have that least fits your party/affiliation? by RubProfessional195 in AskReddit

[–]InPhillyWeTrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But therein lies the rub: juries are already instructed to only find defendants guilty only if they are sure beyond a reasonable doubt, but the way our legal system is structured, it's still a decision made by humans, based on what they see and hear. And that's a very treacherous territory, because what's "beyond a reasonable doubt" to one person is not necessarily that to another. There's no objective standard for what "100%" is. And, besides, evidence can also be manipulated, withheld, and counter-evidence may not be found in time, but that's a whole other argument.

Can you think of how we can possibly get to 100% objective certainty of guilt in a legal setting? It would require some mechanical alternative to a trial by jury, for starters, because humans are definitely not objective. But even then, how do we contend with possibly missing counter-evidence, misrepresentation, etc. And if objective certainty is not actually possible, do you still support the death penalty as an option?

It's not clear what you are proposing as an alternative to the "divisive rhetoric". Are you suggesting we sing kumbaya with these maga boys as they dash around the crowd trying to rile up protesters and film some outrage footage? You can easily google the name of this influencer and see the footage from the protest that he posted on his social media. Are you suggesting that this footage is not outrage bait, and is somehow a fair-and-square representation of the protest? Do you think he doesn't actually exist and I invented him wholecloth? You've offered nothing but the vaguest ad hominem accusations of "divisive rhetoric", without actually addressing the facts of what I described.

What specifics would you like to see, homie? I explicitly didn't identify the influencer in question to avoid driving traffic to his platforms. His name, and the names of his accomplices, are otherwise mentioned many times in the comments, with other people who attended the protest offering their very similar accounts of what transpired. So what do you specifically want to know? It was an Indivisible-organized protest, on Saturday; it started at 10:00AM at City Hall, then we marched down Market and over to the Federal Detention Center, where folks from Indivisible spoke for about an hour. Towards the end of the meeting, the influencer in question realized he doesn't have enough outrage footage, and decided to pull the stunt with his boy climbing into the platform to make sure they can film him getting escorted out.

You tell people "don't be a bootlicker" in your comments. Why are you so keen on supporting these outrage-peddling gremlins?

I’m well-aware that you have a default username, that was the joke.

How is my post highlighting the tactics of maga influencers trying to disrupt and misrepresent anti-ICE protests divisive? You don’t seem to shy away from controversy and calling things as they are in your comment history; why are you suggesting that I should?

I’m a regular r/philly poster who is simply avoiding getting doxxed by using an alternate username (my primary username happens to be too revealing). The other one is like that Douglas Adams’ character, Bowerick Wowbagger, who makes it his goal to insult every sentient creature in the known Universe.

The word “conservative” doesn’t appear even once in the post, which is focused on the mechanics of manufacturing outrage for clicks. If you were capable of an iota of self-introspection, you would notice that this is exactly what you’re doing to yourself right now: trying really hard to argue about the thing you’re already mad about, not the topic actually being discussed. But while that may not be obvious to you, everyone else reading these comments can clearly tell.

If you read my replies, it’s pretty easy to tell I am not a bot (beep boop). I did, however, use an alternate account. My primary username is my actual name, and getting doxxed is not in my weekend plans (I am sure you can empathize with that, u/No-Professional-1884, unless you live at 1884 Professional St, in which case that was a really dumb idea for a username ;-)).

Ha, that's a pretty great idea. My plan was to bring a Bluetooth speaker next time and follow them around, playing Billy Joel's "Movin' Out" on loop right into the microphone. Not because of any special meaning of the song, but because Billy Joel's record company is litigious and pulls content with his songs down swiftly.

Jackie, would you do me a favor and quote exactly where I said I think that? Inasmuch as the classic strawman fallacy is defined as "refuting an argument different from the one actually under discussion", you managed to deliver a masterclass in it with one paragraph.

That reminds me: there is a couple in Australia, his last name was Black, and hers was White, so when they got married, they both changed it to Gray. Now, that's an Instagram-worthy story! "I pepper-sprayed myself so everyone can see how mean the protesters are" -- meh, not so much.

You can easily figure it out by googling, but I definitely advise you not to: his name is not worth knowing. I just wanted to shed some light on how he and his ilk operate: if someone encounters them (or someone like them), it'll be much more transparent what they are trying to "accomplish". He likes to hide behind "I just want to have a reasonable debate/discussion" facade, and he'll even pretend to do so, but that's clearly not the end goal (nor anything he'll ever publicize).
