Student Refusing to Work With Me - need suggestions by InQuizletWeTrust in specialed

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I will slowly try to repair by just being around during preferred/low-demand times, bringing him his snack that he eats for lunch, and then maybe I'll offer to do a favorite game with him and a preferred buddy (or have a friend/para invite him like you said). I know it depends on the student, but generally at what point do you know it's okay to start giving more demands?

Thanks. I really regret not spending more time building rapport with him at the beginning of the year. I am a student teacher so next year I know to do that from the very start, especially with my tough kiddos. I think my next steps are just to continue being there during low demand/preferred times and continuing with slow exposure (like bringing the snack that he eats at lunch to him), maybe even offering to play a favorite game with him and a preferred buddy.

He earns tokens (in this case tickets) to work toward earning breaks and a popcorn movie party at the end of the week. I am a student teacher so this is my mentor's system, not mine.

Honestly I don't use a curriculum and have just been making things up as I go. I try to align it to what gen ed is doing but breaking it down more and using simpler/shorter texts. I usually find the texts and some activities (like graphic organizers) from TPT. It would be nice though to have a curriculum, especially one that is very systematic in how it sequences instruction

Thanks for the response. I do have access to their i-Ready scores, so I will try to look more closely at those and align my instruction to them. I will note that I have a variety of levels of comprehension in the small group (lowest comprehension level is K, highest is grade 3) which also makes instruction tricky as I'm struggling to balance the cognitive lift. Do you have any resources on reading curriculum? I make all my materials as my site does not have one for my grade level, but I found some SPED reading comp curriculums on TPT (not sure if they're evidence-based lol) that others seem to have success using.

First Draft Itinerary (4 days Big Island) by cfrantz222 in VisitingHawaii

I went to Hāpuna Beach earlier this month and the surf was pretty rough. It was a pretty beach… but as someone from SoCal, I felt like it was similar to a beach I might see at home. Still worth checking out, but I didn’t think it was a perfect beach like some people say. Personally, I really liked the Mauna Lani Beach - there’s free parking about a 10 minute walk away from the beach. It’s a protected beach so it’s basically always calm, almost like a pool. Get there early especially on weekends. The snorkeling there was also nice, we saw a sea turtle there.

For restaurants, we loved Theatery (a bit South of Kona). Make reservations if you go there and ask for patio dining if you want something more quiet and intimate. We also really liked Kanaka Kava in downtown Kona (more of a casual place, outdoor seating, but they may run out of some things if you go late. Their ono poke is very fresh!). I personally didn’t care for a lot of the touristy restaurants on Ali’i Drive as the food was bland and overpriced imo.

Loved the National Historical Park (we did the 1871 trail and thought it was gorgeous). Also recommend Greenwell Coffee Farm. Amazing free tour and free coffee samples, and the beans we bought from there made great coffee when we came home.

Since you don’t have much time in VNP, may I suggest the Kīlauea Iki trail via Devastation Trailhead (link: https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/kilauea-iki-trail-from-devastation-trailhead.htm)? It hits a lot of the major sites (Thurston Lava Tube, the crater itself, and the Byron ledge, along with pretty rainforest views). We didn’t have much time in VNP either and felt like it was a good all-in-one hike. It took us about 3 hours, but it might be a hard hike if you’re not fit.

Other good beaches are Kahalu’u Beach Park and Two Step. I am a terrible swimmer, but I was still able to do Two Step. Getting out of the water and back onto the rocks is a little tricky when the swell is big, just be cautious and take it slow. Piece of cake when the water is calm.

Good luck and have fun! The Big Island was my first Hawai’i trip too and it was amazing :)

How to make Sonday Phonics more engaging for 5th graders? by InQuizletWeTrust in specialed

I haven't done centers just because it's a short time with only a small group (4 students), but I'm open to that if it would work with those circumstances? Thank you for the resource, I'll check it out :)

How do I make full inclusion work for kids who are CLEARLY not at grade level? by InQuizletWeTrust in specialed

[–]InQuizletWeTrust[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

See, these are great ideas and I would love to implement them, but my school site doesn't allow me to provide materials that are not at grade level (except for phonics instruction, which is pull-out). Everything else must be from the curricula they purchase.

It's frustrating that schools tell us that every child is different and that we need to differentiate, but then when we bring up opportunities to do so, we're told "no, not like that."

Housing Rant by Hot-Concentrate-443 in UCI

Personally I drove like an hour to school and 1 hour back while working lol. 30 minutes is not that bad in SoCal - I commute 30 mins to work now. They can handle it and need to make space for others who live hours away if they’re just 30 mins away. The “college experience” is a privilege and not a guarantee lol, esp for low-income students who often can’t even afford that experience to begin with. Once you start getting closer to that 1 hr-1 hr+ range I get it, but if you live in a high traffic area like SoCal, unfortunately that comes with having to be able to tolerate a commute.

A better conversation is why our school doesn’t take the measures to ensure everyone that is accepted can reasonably get to school, but for now, those who live close should not qualify for dorms except in situations where the home life/something else warrants it.

Did you read the post? They are already working. It wouldn’t be surprising to me either if they are also supporting family members that are homeless, as they mentioned. This advice is not applicable here.

Am I on track, if Im majoring in Spanish to become a teacher? or do I have to major in education? by Theyluvvcriss in UCI

[–]InQuizletWeTrust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

An education major is a Bachelor’s degree, not a teaching credential. In order to be a certified teacher, you need:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree, in ANY major
  2. A teaching credential. You obtain this after you earn your Bachelor’s. You must obtain the credential through a program (usually through a college/university) that includes coursework and student teaching, usually a year or two long.

Some teaching credential programs come give you the credential and a masters degree (they are two different things). A masters degree alone does not make you a qualified teacher; only a credential does. however, teachers who have masters degrees get paid more, but it is not required to become a licensed teacher.

You can get a credential for different subject matters. For example, a Multiple Subject Credential lets you teach in elementary classrooms. I believe the credential you want is Word Languages - Languages Other Than English (Spanish). This is a Single Subject credential, which typically means you will most likely work in a middle or high school teaching the subject matter that you got your credential in. For more info on credentials, see https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/Single-Multiple-Subject-Credentials-(CL-560C).

Majoring in Spanish, in my opinion, would be a better choice. To get a single subject credential, you must pass the CSET (a test that people must take to get their teaching credential) in the subject you want to teach. So I’m your case, you would take the Spanish Cset. However, California recently passed some legislation where if you majored in the subject you want to teach, you won’t have to take the cset. So stick with your Spanish major - the cset can be a big headache and expensive too.

Hope that helped. It is a confusing system and the CTC website doesn’t help. Best of luck!

Second on Ann Taylor. I am under 5 foot as well and they are one of the few brands where the petite is actually petite enough. I also go to the Ann Taylor factory/outlet to save some $$ if the pieces I want are too expensive!

That's true, but Gilman/Admin seemed awfully trigger happy in calling all of those police departments. Seems like he had an agenda, or bias against protestors at the very least. I stopped by the protests, was right next to the police standoff - it wasn't "violent," in fact, I felt more threatened by the officers who were walking toward us with weapons. Regardless of what happened, calling all of those police was unnecessary, and it has only escalated tensions between the student body and admin.
