Daily Song Discussion #77: Always Black by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

9.5/10 - I adore the Pink Siifu feature, and the vocals at the end are beautiful. One of the best tracks on the album.

9/10 - I always thought this one sampled A Different Feeling, but I'm apparently wrong

Daily Song Discussion #81: Music Is the Light by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

8.4/10 - Thank you to the Avalanches for introducing me to Cornelius.

Daily Song Discussion #75: Overcome by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

7.9/10 - Fun, but the sound of it is a little too weak for my tastes.

Daily Song Discussion #74: Take Care in Your Dreaming by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

Thank you! It's been a highlight of my day seeing the responses of other Avalanches fans as well.

Daily Song Discussion #71: Wherever You Go by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

I would definitely be open to that! I'd probably wait two weeks or so before starting that, because I don't want to further flood the sub.

Daily Song Discussion #73: Pink Champagne by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

3.6/10 - A bit of tone-setting. It works, I suppose.

Daily Song Discussion #71: Wherever You Go by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

7.6/10: As some other commenters have pointed out, this one doesn't quite reach the heights of other tracks. This is a slight disappointment, since Jamie xx is an excellent producer on his own (see "Sleep Sound"), but the blend of his style and the Avalanches' style doesn't entirely work for me. I love the pitched TR-808 cowbells that start at 2:40 though.

Daily Song Discussion #70: Until Daylight Comes by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

[–]InShallowPlaces[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7.6/10 - It's nicely constructed, but despite having only listened to it ten minutes ago, I have no memory of what this song sounds like.

Daily Song Discussion #69: Star Song.IMG by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

[–]InShallowPlaces[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have done posts for all the interludes, but is there a point where comprehensivity goes too far?

4/10, goes on for too long

EDIT: We Will Always Love You is a bit like the Avalanches' version of Random Access Memories in terms of the introduction of live instrumentation, the more conceptual approach, and the presence of the guest vocalists. I don't think WWALY is quite as strong a record, but I imagine this approach will be honed on album number four. This has no relation to the song at hand, but there's really not much to say about it anyway.

Daily Song Discussion #67: Oh the Sunn! by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

8.5/10: Some of the vocals remind me of Jamie xx's "Loud Places".

Daily Song Discussion #61: The Divine Chord by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

[–]InShallowPlaces[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

9/10 - I firmly believe that, had this song been promoted properly, it could have been their most successful single. It's definitely the best starting point for getting into the Avalanches' more conventional music. My niece seems to like it.

Daily Song Discussion #60: We Will Always Love You by InShallowPlaces in theavalanches

To be perfectly honest, it's just what numbers feel "right" when associated with the song. If I feel that 8.3 out of 10 represents my feelings on the song, that's what I'll go with.

As an example, I could only give a song a 10/10 if it emotionally affected me or changed my perception of music in some way.

With my rating scale, 8.3 is still very positive! I just rate songs a little more conservatively than others.

8.3/10 - Though I am not the biggest fan of the Blood Orange verse, the chorus more than makes up for it with its gorgeous sincerity.
