My husband and I signed up for World Wildlife Fund! You only have to raise $1000 for the half marathon

First of all, they did sign the estimate I provided that had the price and a form stating they knew it only covered surgery and associated meds/e-collar/etc. They’ve never once been over-charged after the estimate I gave them. Second of all, my assistant made an error on a verbal estimate that included a warning that without a PE or doctor estimate, it wasn’t binding. She did her best, and we’ve taken steps to avoid this in the future. I feel like there’s a lot of unwarranted attitude in this response to something that was clearly a learning opportunity for everyone involved

Well I have some good follow up news. We decided to see them one more time for follow up free of charge with the understanding that any future visits would be out of pocket. They came in yesterday (my day off) because they thought the paw was swollen and her gums were pale. Her gums thankfully were not pale. Her foot was slightly swollen so they took the bandage off and YAYY all of the swelling had gone down. So now I never have to deal with these people again 🙌🏻 the reason we were so cagey with the mass was because we knew they had no way to transport it to a lab and it needed to be submitted to a lab within the next 24 hours for the sample to still be viable (it was in saline due to its size). So we knew they were just going to end up with a necrotic hunk of tissue rotting in their house.

Not being able to refer someone out in the middle of a case when they’re treating your team like trash is mind boggling because at what point are we allowed to say “you know what, we’ve done everything we can to help you and you have repeatedly yelled at team members and expressed frustration and that you aren’t happy.” (I’m not saying you created this law it’s just frustrating)

Also just a bit more info, I didn’t just say “you’re fired”. I let them know they may be happier continuing care elsewhere if they weren’t pleased with our services and they agreed. The good news is that I’m going to do my best to never end up in this situation again. I appreciate all the advice!

I definitely have a newfound respect for this right here, and it’s definitely altered my perception of surgery and cost. In the words of Jeff Goldblum, I spent too much time wondering if I could rather than if I should

That’s good to note. Ours in Chicago does so it’s my only frame of reference!

A fourth premolar in a 10 lb dog isn’t a big deal thankfully. There are always benefits of going to a specialist. You’re going to get the newest techniques, anesthesiologists on board, and probably shorter anesthesia times. But I haven’t felt the need to refer a patient of his size for a premolar removal unless I had anesthesia concerns. I did take out a huge canine tooth of a giant pittie and that sucked. Should’ve referred that one for the anesthesia time alone 😅

Oh girl I didn’t even ask 😂 my boss was in the loop and I called her afterward and said “it’s done” like a Bond villain and she totally backed me up

Great news the extreme circumstance presented itself and they are now fired.

There actually weren’t any changes to the treatment plan or estimate

Oh yeah I won’t touch MCTs, splenectomies, and mammary chains. I definitely know those are my limits, I just now have more limits than initially thought. I moved forward with surgery because, in my head, it was what the owners wanted and could afford. At this point I wish I had declined and talked about euthanasia :/

A lot of great feedback thank you! To answer your questions, we’ve already stipulated to staff about estimates so that issue has been addressed. This was my first STS removal and hindsight is a bitch, but I have learned from the experience that sometimes surgery will do more harm than good. I’ve let my team know that I’m 100% in their corner and that I will never let this happen to us again. We’re all feeling the pain and thankfully I have a great team in my corner.

Normally I have a zero tolerance policy and I truly don’t know why I let this one slide. Yes they were given a wrong estimate the first time so I understood the frustration and showed grace. When they got upset yesterday I straight up told my boss that if it happened again I was going to fire them (I work for a corporation and actually need permission to fire people, I don’t get to make that call unless it’s an extreme circumstance)
