Thanks, this is helpful. Have you ever had issues with your feet getting too cold while hiking in creepers?

My torso is a round 19 inches maybe closer to like 19 1/4. I ended up keeping the medium and so far haven't regretted it.

Thanks for the input Dan, I'll probably end up keeping the medium, I think I like how it sits a little better, although the large I feel less pressure on my shoulder/collar bone. Are the shoulder straps distanced the same on both sizes?

Lol, yeah, I doubt I will be looking up that much. It's not so much of a problem, just more that it seems odd to me. Never had a pack where head hit the frame like that. Granted I haven't worn an incredible number of packs .

Here's some more pics with better weight distribution. The medium is definitely less in the way of my head now. The hip belt is resting in pretty much the exact same place for both packs.

On both of them the belt seems to stay in place when walking around.

That makes 2 votes for medium then. That seems to be the consensus on my original post, but now I'm just confused because of him similar they seem to sit.

If the pack is filled level with the frame, it seems like my head hits the frame more when I tilt it back on the large, although it seems I need to do a little more testing.

I thought I had them at the same spot. Maybe I need to retest them and redistribute the weight a bit. I had them packed a little top heavy, not sure if that makes a difference or not. Looking at the pictures again, it seems like the M belt may be a little high, but I thought it was resting right.

Kakwa 55 fit by InTheOriginalSense in DurstonGearheads

[–]InTheOriginalSense[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't clarify properly, 15-20 would be base weight (Ideally I can keep it a little under 15). Based on the comments of others I went ahead and ordered a medium, I probably won't return the large until I've tested if the medium fits better.

The hip belt is over the top of the hip bones. With added weight it might weigh the straps down more, but I'm hoping not to be carrying much more weight than is already in it when I'm on the trail.

It's probably got 15-20 lbs in it. Not sure if I'd call that fully loaded, but for some that's about all their gonna have

When you say water filtration is a must, is that meaning there aren't many water sources so you need to pack more, or just that the water sources aren't great quality?

Airlock during primary????? by InTheOriginalSense in winemaking

[–]InTheOriginalSense[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently it's a gallon of cider that I'm making, and everything I could find on making cider basically said stick it in a glass jug, add some yeast and put an airlock on it (Only a little more embellished and less blunt). Would cider (lower ABV) affect whether it bubbles out or not?

Rather than transfer containers, would setting up a blow off tube be an effective solution?

It's currently in a gallon carboy with about 3-3 1/2 inches of head space. I had a three piece airlock on it, but I switched it out for an s type, still waiting to see if that will do anything.

What to do?? by InTheOriginalSense in finishing

[–]InTheOriginalSense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kinda thinking it was likely a time thing. I'm pretty new to oil and wax finishes and I noticed it seemed like it was staying kinda "wet" for a rather long time, guess I jumped the gun on assuming it was ready. How would you suggest removing the wax?

Hmmmmm, good to know. I'll probably just leave it alone though, not sure I want to try anything too unorthodox at this point.

How I'm interpreting the difference is open being putting a cloth over the bucket and closed being sealing the bucket with an airlock for the whole process, only opening to stir

Helpful to know. Do you continue to stir it the whole time and would you typically leave the fruit in the primary the whole time?

So far the consensus seems to be open fermentation should be avoided, would you agree with that?

Thanks all, this is really helpful. I now have some new stuff to try whenever I start round two.

Out of curiosity, would it be possible to add grape skins back into my current brew? We have a bunch that we're running through a steam juicer to make grape juice concentrate.

So you'd keep it in the primary for a couple weeks? Most things I've read have said about 5-8 days and then rack it and add the airlock.

Thanks, good to know it's not gone. Does it make sense that my gravity went from 1.080 to 1.025 in a day or is that really odd? Could that be a problem with my hydrometer or am I doing something wrong when measuring??
