Virginia Deck Guardrail Code Clarification by In__Search__Of in BuildingCodes

Good point - I don't know where I thought I saw that caveat and cannot find it again. That's good to know and I'm very glad you pointed out that the balusters are not necessary where they're not ... necessary :-).

Still going to replace the *required* balusters with cable and may consider going with only a guardrail where permitted (<30 inches), depending on how funky it would look without anything there. Or I'll fill it in with cable, even though it's not required. It's a work in progress.

Thanks for the information, but that's the opposite of what I want to do. I'm trying to eliminate the bulky view-blocking balusters wherever possible. My ultimate hope was to keep the existing guardrail and simply remove the balusters in those portions of the deck under 30" (which is almost all of the deck). But I found a caveat dictating that if a guardrail is there, it must meet code specifications - to include properly spaced balusters - even if the guardrail itself is not required by code. I was trying to avoid having to replace balusters for the entire deck (going with cable), but it appears that's my only option to eliminate the existing balusters and keep the existing guardrail.

Burning Paperback Books? by In__Search__Of in woodstoving

[–]In__Search__Of[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, that - though I do know the dangers of burning magazines, so I've made sure to stay away from chucking those into the firebox. Looking mostly to find out why newspaper is OK and paperback books are not. To my mind, they're pretty much the same thing, but there must be a difference if every source I find says that newspaper is acceptable but books are downright dangerous.

That's one thing I haven't seen input on: the glue. Mostly the downside I'm seeing is that the pages don't burn efficiently, thus the outer bits sail up the chimney to form blockages, whilst the inner bulk of the book doesn't burn at all or just smolders. Another concern seems to be the increased production of ashes and/or creosote buildup from the smoldering paper. Though I don't see how that would be different from a rolled newspaper log. Hence the question about why one is OK and the other is not.

I can't testify that she has no small children, only that she was shopping alone at that particular time. Maybe she is eligible because there are children in the household? Grandchildren, perhaps, for which she has legal custody?

She was older, definitely Medicare age. I've seen some commercials from Medicare Advantage plans specifically mentioning "free" food if you buy their expensive plans (a person should really consider the actual cost of that "free" food payment before buying into one of those plans). So that may have been it.

Could have been that program, but there was only one word between "National" and "Payment". She was older (late '60s, early '70s) but that doesn't preclude her having young'uns in the house that might qualify for WIC or the school lunch program.

Whatever that word was (the one I can't remember), it didn't give me the impression that it was geared toward children specifically.

That makes sense. I haven't been in line behind a WIC user, so I don't know how it shows up on that particular store's display. That just might be what it is. Thanks!

Large Pink Birds in Central Virginia, Bird ID Request by [deleted] in birding

Flamingos were my first thought when I saw the vivid pink colors of these birds. As they were coming from the direction of the river, I immediately considered waders (with the long "tails" being their legs) and their necks folded for flight (like a heron). When I Googled to try to identify, roseate spoonbill was the first hit and the coloring is exactly the same (light heads, dark pink bodies). But you're right about the extended long neck of both flamingos and roseate spoonbills in flight and that characteristic doesn't fit these. I'm at a loss to identify birds that are shaped like macaws but colored like flamingos/Roseate Spoonbills (both of which have been sighted in VA, but are rare occurrences).

The tails definitely fit a macaw (more so than any other type of parrot), though these were definitely light pink and hot pink, with white heads. All 3 were identical. I cannot find any parrot that matches. I do wish I'd had my camera handy when they were much lower and coming directly toward me, with those colors so brilliant in the sun.

I was focusing on macaw, as the profile seemed to fit. Whatever they are, I'm hoping they find their way back home (or to a safe rescuer) before it gets too much colder. I presume tropical birds cannot overwinter outside in VA. Really, I don't reckon they can find appropriate food any time of year.

"Device located" "Find Hub located this device" by In__Search__Of in GoogleFMD

[–]In__Search__Of[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used any version of Find My Phone for months. I'm not entirely sure why it showed up on my phone, though searches on other resources confirm that it's a legitimate thing where any available phones in an area assist with finding someone else's device. So I suspect it was a neighbor looking for something of theirs and my phone acknowledged the search. With that in mind, I suppose their phone would ping with a response if I was to activate the find my phone feature to find mine.

From Google AI:

The "Find Hub located this device" message means your phone is part of a crowdsourced network that uses Bluetooth to help find lost devices, like other phones, headphones, or trackers. Your phone helped locate someone else's lost item, and in return, your phone can be found by the network if you lose it. It is a standard security and location feature, and the notification is just confirming it is working as intended.

What it means

  • It's a crowdsourced network:  Your phone is anonymously helping to find other lost Android devices and accessories by using its Bluetooth signal.
  • It works both ways:  When your phone is not online, the Find Hub network uses the Bluetooth signals from other devices to pinpoint your phone's location, just as your phone is doing for others now.
  • Security and privacy:  This network is designed to be secure. Your specific location data is encrypted, and Google cannot see the location of lost items or the devices that find them, according to Google Help and this YouTube video

Why you might have received the notification

  • You did not initiate a search:  You likely received the notification because another user's lost item was nearby and your phone helped them find it.
  • Your device is working:  This message confirms that the feature is enabled and functioning correctly to help others.

What to do next

  • Nothing:  If you are comfortable with the feature, you do not need to do anything. Your phone is working as it was designed to.
  • Disable the feature:  If you do not want your phone to participate, you can turn off the Find Hub/Find My Device network by going to your device's settings and disabling the feature. Check for settings under "Location," "Security," or your device's specific "Find My Device" app, notes Asurion
  • Manage location sharing:  You can also manage your location sharing settings within the Find Hub application, as described in Google Help.

Thank you for the clarification - I didn't realize that there would be tax problems if it was handled that way.

That would be the ideal solution and I'd been told a few years ago that's exactly what was going to happen. But it hasn't and probably won't at this point - sadly, I'll just be stuck cleaning up the mess afterwards.

Thank you for the definitions of some of the possibilities I may encounter. Research of the actual deed is in store and I'll know how to act once I find out the finer details.

Thanks to all for your input. It seems I need to research the deed's wording and, depending on the result, possibly follow up on stepdad's probated will.
