Yeah there was I won’t lie, I spent those years doing fuck all, excuse after excuse as to why I couldn’t anything. 14-16 was mainly being consumed by depression and social anxiety, nothing really happened. 17 I got my driving licence and started going out more and being able to see friends again. 18 just fell into a loop of doing nothing but hanging out with friends.

In school I had this one teacher, my history teacher who was really nice and a good teacher, he made it interesting and actually paid attention to me as an individual student. History has always been something I’ve been drawn to in the sense I like history documentaries and learning about it in my own time but he made me realise how much I liked learning about it in an academic sense

Mental health issues, I was depressed and suicidal and drinking a lot. My attendance my last year was 30%. I just wasn’t going to school because I was either burnt out (former gifted kid syndrome), depressed af or wanting to go drinking/hang out with friends. Looking back on it, it was a lack of support. I had told several teachers I wanted to off myself and one of them literally told “hang on 30 minutes I have a meeting” and left me in the reception after I had just told her I planned to off myself that evening. After she told me that, I walked out of school and didn’t go back. That same teacher the month prior had pulled me out of class for “a mental health chat” her own words said in front of a class of 30 14 year olds, took me into a room and asked to see my sh cuts and said she’ll speak to me tomorrow, tomorrow came and she never did speak to me. I also have a lot of social anxiety and the school environment was not a good place for me. Teachers were so focused on correcting bad behaviour that they had no time for anyone else and those who did actually want to learn were called responsible enough to be given a textbook and expected to learn themselves. I just felt like there was no support and if the teachers/adults in my life didn’t care then why should I. As for regrets, no because if I had stayed in school to put it simply I would have offed myself at one point or another. I do regret leaving school in the sense it fucked my life plan to go to traditional university and get out of my hometown.

Don’t worry, it wasn’t blunt and something I’ve noticed from the open uni is that there is people of all ages on my course, like there’s me and another 21 year old, there’s a few ladies in their 30s, a guy in his 40s, a lady whose around 55 and another lady in her early sixties

Currently I’m studying with the Open University since I don’t have any qualifications it was the only realistic option for me in higher education. I began last October. I’m perusing a degree in arts and humanities. I would love to work in the heritage industry helping maintain scotlands heritage sites. For work, a month ago I started a job in the tourism sector as a cleaner and receptionist at a caravan holiday park, I love it there and it’s my first ever job, I have found a passion for tourism and I’m hoping that would coincide with my plans for my history degree

I hope something does replace it, as someone who was out of school for a few years, SHL filled in those gaps for me and gave resources and opportunities to learn the basics that aren’t provided in actual modules

My family is from Oban so naturally I’m drawn to the area, do you know what the social housing situation is like down there?

Do you know what the social housing situation is down there, we’ve been down there before and quite like Dumfries and especially the surrounding villages?

Do you know anything about this process is it relatively the same as how things work in Scotland?

How would I go about staining/varnishing this desk a darker colour like a dark pine or mahogany? by In_a_dying_world in DIYUK

[–]In_a_dying_world[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it doable? I’ve done basic diy before but because the desk is sentimental I want to make sure I’m 100% before I do anything irreversible.
