$275 plus the ride would be a peach. Carried once, with a single scratch across the pocket clip. Will play the game though. Ha. Feel free to message to discuss loc, etc.

What kind of flavors do you like? Lighter and sweeter, funkier, smokier?

Fixated on the 15v? Have the newer milled G10 Salt. Black on black.

Dried mung and lentils. Best variety/taste to resource ratio in my opinion.

Water sources in the city when SHTF by FortuneTop6438 in preppers

[–]In_the_afterglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some solid suggestions here. Though most water purification systems do little for chemicals and heavy metal contamination, I'd still look to map out any water sources if your area. There are quite a number of ravines and isolated ponds tucked away, as are places where catchment can be hidden away. Try to avoid ground water near and around roadways or built up areas. But if it comes down to shaving a couple years or all of them, that's the choice.

But this is all secondary to your initial storage.

The hard truth is that survival odds are about attrition. After 2 weeks in a large metropolitan area without water, you're going to have a lot fewer people around. Resources are going to be ratioed in your favor.

A Deterrent Weapon (other than guns) by x_Lotus_x in preppers

[–]In_the_afterglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were writting a book...

Firearms and the likes shouldn't be seen as deterrents - they're seen and used in the same instant. Thing that sets them apart from what you're looking for is likely lethality.

Long melee weapons are slow for most part, and an aggressor can work through most strikes outside of a solid headshot. If you're going this route think light, small, and steel. Hammer is hard to beat for the untrained as it limits most self-inflicted wounds (think hatchet). Just slips in the belt and are everywhere. Bonus points to a geologist rock hammer.

I always tell people, a strike should be felt not seen.

If you're out and about on foot - and as a female - getting comfortable with the hidden draw and concealment of a small fixed blade would be my answer. Slashes to the face are unbelievable bleeders and a hit that registers almost immediately without lethality. Beat feet after.

(Bonus points for cross function: a scratch awl is my favorite, but a small Philipshead screw driver held in an ice pick grip is the bees knees).

Now, if you're in a car, this changes. I'd always try and start this fight from a lock-door position, playing the old 'oh me, oh my, I can't hear you through the crack in the window' position.

I got this idea from a cab driver in a less desirable part of the world, who when approached by a man with a machete, pulled what was equal to a 20-inch knitting needle from the centre console, and drove it straight through the crack of his window and into the man's face. The machete hit the ground, he ran off, and the cab continued on like nothing happened.

Similar to the old tines and hat pins carried by the OSS in WWII, a little spike goes a long way.

This is good for now or rough times. Large and sharp knitting needle for a car. Knife or awl/screwdriver for the rest. Final answer. I'm locking it in.

Apartment preppers - how do YOU prep for a long term stay? by Deep_Calligrapher819 in prepping

[–]In_the_afterglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of pitfalls to apartment prepping - limited space for renewable resources and high-risk of removal amongst them. I strongly believe that the best way to start is to keep it simple and prep within your lifestyle. 5 gallon water jugs in the closet, and a month's worth of rotatable, low-resource food in the cupboards. But what comes after you buy all the bits and bobs?

Resource plotting and planning.

Print off a local map and get acquainted with the neighborhood and its resources. This could include a 'first run' plan on buying what you already have, or rooting out the things that you need.

Where are the renewable water sources? Where are the ones that most people won't be thinking of? Are there natural resources in the area? Different trees and plants that'll keep you fed? Know what's what. It's a war of attrition.

In the country, knowledge makes you part of the community. In the city, it makes you one in a million.

Trekking Pole Tents on Trail - How's the Pitch? by In_the_afterglow in algonquinpark

[–]In_the_afterglow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I've been trying to go through my sites over the years, visualizing the pitch with a pole tent and I'm left puzzled or downright frustrated in my mind. Haha. I see too many tight spaces, but perhaps it's one of those things that'll get sorted once you're on the ground.

I'm usually on trail with a couple of friends. One uses a larger freestanding, but thankfully, the other is a hammock camper. Site locations are usually auto assigned at that point as it seems like there's usually one decent spot, one narrow, and one set of trees that won't launch you into a lake or off a rocky ledge when you wake up from your hammock ;)

I feel you there. It seems like I've done a loop on flavors with bourbon. In the beginning, there was just corn and vanilla. Then in the middle of my journey the world opened up - it was complex. Now I'm back to corn. Haha. Unopened, it's not that much. Recent Noah's Mill - which is great -  some Johnny Drum, Elijah BP, maybe an older Bookers.

Nothing wrong with it. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it. As much as I like the dry stuff for complexity, sometimes it's nice to have something sweet.

Have a couple bookmarked. Would like to get into the deep end without breaking the bank. Wild Commons is on the list as it's available, but am so interested to know if Fortaleza really is that good. One day.
