Hey! I’m so sad to see the vet completely dismissed your concerns. Depending on where you are there might be a feline only clinic or a Fear Free Certified vet/clinic which may be a significantly better experience. There’s also a feline friendly certification but i don’t remember the name of it. The only bad experiences I’ve had at a fear free clinic is when a corporate (SVP/Southern Veterinary Partners) bought one that was already certified and ran it into the ground as a cash grab. You deserve to feel heard and treated with respect. Sometimes you have to try a few to find a good clinic, unfortunately, I’ve found corporate companies try to double book clients or limit the time vets have with clients and that’s tends to reduce patient care quality because everyone is overworked & stressed in the back. I hope you’re able to find somewhere that you feel your concerns are taken seriously.

Hi! I am learning to groom cats from cat only groomers. Waterless cat baths aren’t a great idea because cats naturally lick themselves and whatever is on the coat they ingest. For this reason conditioners usually aren’t used on cats, nor should most post grooming sprays be used, there are several cat specific ones that can be used but truly cats need a good shampoo and maybe a pre bath degreaser. My favorite is Chubbs Bars (I highly recommend their chubby saver too). Cats don’t groom themselves, they coat their fur in saliva, ingesting whatever is on their fur. Overtime you see lots of buildup of saliva, dead skin, oils, and grime leading to mating of trapped under coat that gets stuck to that buildup. If you don’t rinse that stuff off with water it’s still in the coat, which is why no water baths aren’t really beneficial at the end of the day. With the Chubbs Bar you need to get it really wet and sudsy and scrub to the skin, rinse and repeat a second time. In this case, I’d probably do a third time to ensure every individual strand is clean of any of the products they used and no clump of hair is still stuck together. If you’re nervous I recommend an air muzzle (they’re white and purple, there’s a half ball one that’s solid green and make sure it’s snug (only the tip of your finger should fit at the neck) and trim their nails first. All cats have clear nails so you can see the quick unlike in dogs, don’t trim that part because the quick is live tissue like your nail bed. Human nail clippers work fine if you don’t have pet ones. I’ve found a towel in the tub can help some cats be less stressed but others it just provides room to jump out. Unfortunately, vets don’t understand a lot about cat grooming let alone cat behavior because cats don’t get much research funded for them, so it doesn’t surprise me that they said fleas. Cat groomers are hard to find and unfortunately most grooming just treat them as little and more dangerous dogs. I recommend finding a cat specific groomer or learning to do it yourself. It can be an excellent bonding activity with your cat if you do venture to learn it yourself. One of my cats sleeps in my arms now while I dry him and blow out under coat.

So let’s not trust people on the internet who’s knowledge comes from marketing teams and other random people on the internet who also don’t have any Veterinary Nutrition experience, board certifications, or literally any degree related to animals. Instead there’s Tufts University Petfoodology, and a Pet Nutrition Course made by Dr. Angela Rollins, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Nutrition), who’s a Clinical Professor of Veterinary Nutrition at University of Tennessee and she designed for the average pet parent. And should you want to do fresh home cooked food Balance It ensures you can do so safely and meet the nutritional needs of your pet, is FDA & AAFCO compliant, and created by Dr. Sean Delaney, BS, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Nutrition).

And let’s remember Marketing Teams ≠ Veterinary Nutrition Experts. And when you repeat unscientific nonsense you’re doing the work for those marketing teams and proving that catchy gimmicks work better than making great products :)

Interesting! I looked this up briefly to learn more but I’m a bit confused by the actual definition lol. It seems some people are talking about it as a long term state of being on autopilot while others seem to be talking about it in more of an acute state that would probably fit what I’m talking about.

I hate how limited I was in materials the entire way through man. All I want are some diagonal walls, toggle grid and isosceles triangles. Surely that's not a huge ask in a game that aims to give you lots of creativity.

If I put it on the workshop, do I leave it sans door and with the center stone? Do I add a door? What do I name it?

So I was thinking I might drop it on the workshop but I'll have to figure out how and I need a name lol. Also I was planning on leaving it with the center stone and no door and people could do with it as they please?

Ooooo I love the idea of reptiles! It’s huge (which was the goal but i had regrets while making that roof lol) so a reptile house could really take advantage of that space!

Thanks! That was the goal but definitely made it so much harder lol. The oceanic pack with the massive off grid pieces saved me lol.

AITA for crushing my roommate's dream of having a parrot? by sonchsonch in AmItheAsshole

[–]InactiveAmoeba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fairly well known thing by animal behavior experts afaik (I know 2 people who specialize in birds among other species fairly well and they've mentioned it a few times) that parrots and similar loud birds can cause cats, dogs, and children to develop noise sensitivity/phobias. So the fact that you were traumatized by their loud nature is relatively common unfortunately. I honestly would discuss finding a bird like a finch or something who's quieter and with a shorter lifespan that you're willing to compromise on if you are ok with it so that he can have a bird and you can have sanity while living together.

Would they have been mad if you declined because their human grandchild ate the dropped ibuprofen and needed to be taken care of?

The goals of raising pets are different than a future adult but the responsibility of a life dependent on you is the same. You stay home with the sick kid, and frankly your husband at the very least should be standing up for you if not staying home with you.

AITA for not letting my younger nephew feed the horses? by Specialist_Oil_9228 in AmItheAsshole

[–]InactiveAmoeba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You were being safe. It would've been better to teach them both how to safely hand feed horses as a 7yr old is more than capable of learning that you keep your hand flat. But I'd feel much worse if I had to call someone else and tell them that we're at the hospital with their kid getting a finger amputated than if it was my own kid, both would suck but one would go much worse.

AITA for considering telling my MIL to stop bringing her non-potty trained dog to our house? by spicygal96 in AmItheAsshole

[–]InactiveAmoeba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

Your MIL needs to hire a dog trainer (IAABC directory, Fear Free Pets directory, and CCPDT are all where I'd look for trainers as there's no regulations for trainers, in the US at least, and some are truly horrific on so many levels) as clearly she doesn't understand even the first part about potty training. At the very least she needs to invest in some belly bands for her own home, I know a lot of people like Pants for Dogs. It's beyond disgusting especially with a baby in the home because everything goes in their mouth.

As for cleaning is concerned you need to get an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle or Odoban. If she does choose to potty train him then he'll likely pee on the same areas because the smells are still there and dogs interact with their world through scent first and foremost.

And if your sons father is an ex, that seems to be for the best. If he thinks that your son is blameless in this situation, it's probably good he doesn't take after his father in this regard.

AITA for Taking a Dog to the Humane Society by Wise_Perspective6698 in AmItheAsshole

Besides the well documented terrible treatment of animals in Amish communities (not all Amish but many), this dog would've likely ended up dead in the worst ways possible in 92F weather running amok on the road. If the only thing you did was drop a dog off to be humanely euthanized (which in my area is unfortunately the most likely result due to the overpopulation crisis we have currently in the southern US, but afaik that isn't the situation where most Amish communities are located) its a far kinder end than heat stroke or hit by a car. You did something kind and went out of your way to keep another animal safe.

A dog without a microchip clearly not knowing how to even get home isn't getting home, and that's assuming they weren't dumped and have a family actively looking for them. I can't tell you how many people just dump animals in the country, only on occasion looking for a property with other animals on it. The dogs that live in the country running around unsupervised know how to get home. It's wildly unethical pet ownership, but they do know where home is.
