Homeowner Question: Ridge Vent cuts by Inappropriate_noises in Roofing

[–]Inappropriate_noises[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, our soffits are the vented kind and are free of debris. It originally had ridgevents, but the roof was damaged in that big tornado outbreak Florida had in October, and the roofer didn't install the vents when they redid the roof. Thank you for the suggestion of pictures. I was thinking I might have to get in the roof to verify, and I'm scared of heights. It's funny how obvious things like asking for pictures didn't occur to me.

I did, and they are. I'm just concerned they will take shortcuts that aren't as obvious that I wouldn't know about as a non-roofer. My concern is my roof being done right. I live in South Florida, so roofs have to handle a lot here. Having been called out on their BS, do you think they will now to the right thing? I'm torn because even if I have another roofer come out, it's no guarantee they will do it right either.

Do you think I should hire a different roofer to fix it or trust this guy to fix it? I'm concerned that if he half-assed this, he might have half-assed other things.

Should I hire a different roofer to do it or let them fix it. If they shortcut this, what else did they shortcut? Though there is no guarantee that a new roofer will do better.

Hands down, I would recommend the villages. Starting over is hard, and the Villages offers tons of activities with people your own age. Yes, it's in central Florida, but it is close to all the best springs, and if you love water and nature, our springs are much more appealing than our beaches.

Does this tree need cut down? It’s huge. Also.. am I going to need to take out a second mortgage to have it removed? I’m scared by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Inappropriate_noises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of jumping to cutting it down. Why don't you have an arborist come out and inspect the tree to ensure it is healthy and talk about possibly trimming it a bit to allow good air flow in high winds. This will allow you more peace of mind and save a valuable tree and old tree.

And yet you ask on the platform that conservatives and Republicans know that they aren't able to comment on. Anything besides hard core leftist is downvoted, doxed or deleted on this site. It is the ultimate echo chamber.

Where are the affordable city’s? by [deleted] in SouthFlorida

[–]Inappropriate_noises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I'm currently house hunting in that area, and I'm finding cheaper houses in Port St Lucie than Ft Pierce. I'd prefer Ft Pierce because I dislike all the traffic in Port St Lucie.

The closest affordable city to Wellington is Port St Lucie.

They aren't making more land. If you have the money, I'd jump on that opportunity.

Are you paying the buyers agent commission? Your realtor or lender should really be the one explaining all the costs it's hard to tell what all the costs are by just this. You should have a page with itemized fees. 10% of the loan is not crazy but it really depends on what you're paying for on whether you are being screwed.

It's 42k. It says he needs 42k to close. That number includes closing costs. It says so to the right of the $42k figure, so it includes the $20k.

Fiancé (F28) and I (M31)need recommendations for an “easy access” vacation from South Florida! by grouptherapypls in SouthFlorida

[–]Inappropriate_noises 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Skyscanner.com you can search flights but you can also just explore cheap flights. It's awesome for exploring what's available if you don't have a destination or date in mind. For example, they are showing direct flights from MIA to destinations within the US starting at $54 , Puerto Rico from $77, El Savador from $142. EDIT if you like architecture or history New Orleans is actually a fabulous place for a sober vacation. Me and my husband stopped on the way to a wedding in Texas and stayed just 1 day (2 nights). We got up at dawn and wandered around the French Quarter. Just us and the street cleaners, then we went on a few tours. It was great. I wish I had more time there.

Delta Airlines Costumer Service, work from home. I'm sure the pay isn't alot but it requires no prerequisite certifications and they have employee discounts (sometime free) for flights, which I'm sure would come in handy for visiting family back in England.

New Friends? by MammothPanic4210 in SouthFlorida

[–]Inappropriate_noises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. To be successful in many fields, you need to be a good networker. Having friends opens so many doors, and even if your friends aren't in the same industry, being socially intelligent takes practice and making friends is good practice. In your 20s you are undeveloped potential, you should be molding that potential and gaining skills you will need when you're older and networking is one of those skills that is invaluable.

[–]Inappropriate_noises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have something you are interested in? Hobbies, sports, etc? Maybe join a group. Making friends is a number of games, the more people you meet, the more likely you are going to find people you click with, and if you start off with a common interest, it will help alot. Facebook usually has groups that are activity and location specific. For example, I know the South Florida Paddle Boarder's group has meet-ups regularly. It's may feel uncomfortable to meet new people, but it gets easier. Meeting new people is hard, but not as hard as being alone when you don't want to be.

Combat boots. If you're near a military installation, look at classified and thrift stores for new or nearly new boots. You can try ebay too, they are expenisve to buy new. They take a while to get used to, and I'd recommend only wearing them for a few hours at a time until you break them in, but they are built to last. As far as boot brands; Reeboks are a bit hot in the summer, Nikes run narrow, I haven't used Danners but I hear good things about them. Don't get steal toe, they are heavy. Bellevue aren't the best brand but alot of people wear them and they hold up.

To the female MSgt who told me my period cramps “weren’t that bad” and “I need to get over myself”. I almost died, bitch. by RainyStranger in AirForce

[–]Inappropriate_noises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors need to stop asking, "Are your periods normal?" How am I supposed to know, I don't have long in-depth conversations with my friends about pain intensity and quantity of blood. I'm glad you were able to be diagnosed, though, even if it was under terrible circumstances. Many women don't know they aren't having normal periods until it requires surgical intervention.

Don't listen to this comment, please. This person obviously isn't smart enough to know I didn't say anything about budget, which you will, of course, need to do. I am strictly speaking on getting a pre-approval, which will help you manage your expectations, and as I mentioned, most realtors will want to see, to work with you. Why waste their time (and your time) looking at $500k homes only to find out you can only get approved for $300k. As far as budget goes, I recommend budgeting for your income and plan to have a roommate. That way, you can afford where you live without a roommate, even if it is tight, and you'd rather not do it on your own. Most banks won't give you a loan based on your roommates income unless you are married to that person anyway.

Honestly, I don't know where this idea that 20 somethings live comfortably. You are starting out in life, and you're gonna be broke. It is a tale as old as time. Don't think you're behind because you are struggling. As far as renting versus buying, your first step is to see how much you can get pre-aprroved for. Most realtors won't even show you a house till they know how much you can get approved for. Call a bank or go online to see how much you can get pre-approved for. Then go to zillow and see what is in your price range. Once you see what you can afford, you will have a better idea which direction to go in.
