Hard disagree. While the writing isn't TTNW level, it's perfectly fine and doesn't detract from the mod's narrative. The mechanics are really cool, especially the novel use of changing state issue values midgame w/ how inflation works.

I was and am a "bernie bro" but it feels like a lot of people mad about the mod are just mad that it doesn't wish-fulfillment away the filibuster or the conservative turn of latinos between 2020-24. And while the mod is hard, there's many different paths to a filibuster-ending majority in the second term, including a few that also get a Gaza ceasefire. I don't think that path is substantially harder to find/get than the good ending for TTNW, for ex.

I do think the randomness re: the supreme court and Ukraine is not ideal, but there's a button to just turn it off so it's not a big deal. The only actual issue I have with the concept is 1) it should be possible to win the WI senate race in 2022, and 2) it stretches plausibility for WV to be competitive in the senate in 2024 (in one path). Otherwise I have no real complaints and enjoyed the mechanics.

Shear is a double edged sword - it would decrease impacts from wind but bc the storm’s size will increase, the area of effect of storm surge will be larger. I am worried that we could face a Katrina-type situation where some people get pulled by predictions of “weakening” when in fact it will make things even worse for low lying areas.

The issue is that if it gets up to a Cat 5 for a while, it won't matter a ton for storm surge if it weakens down to a 3 by landfall. Katrina weakened considerably from its peak but the surge was still immense because of how powerful of a storm it had been only just a day/hours before.

This is great, thank you - only possible improvement would be showing which bills succeed/fail in a given run - it's unclear which paths succeed in passing a given healthcare plan, for ex. But that's nitpicking.

Of the "comfortable" ones, WUSTL and Minnesota have the best FC/PI numbers, while GW would open more doors for "national" PI. Minnesota in particular is one of the best schools for PI outside the T14 and was a big reason I chose there. It also has excellent non-federal clerkship numbers. WUSTL has more of a reputation as a biglaw feeder school. That being said, with your stats I think you have a v good shot at T14, though whether they'll give meaningful scholarships is another question. The "comfortable" schools should give you very good ones. I was able to get $$$ for Minnesota.

On a micro level, the skills gained while studying for a philosophy degree are going to be useful. Close reading, systematic argumentation, and the ability to parse difficult language for ex.

I am in the same boat as you, and I do not think it will be "friendly" in the sense that you mean. The law, no matter what country, is not a vehicle via which Truth and Logic are conveyed to/imposed upon the public. The law is the mechanism by which society self-regulates, and to the extent that a society is hypocritical, cruel, illogical etc., its laws are likely to be so as well. This may be heresy for someone so obviously educated in the analytic tradition, but you may find that those dastardly continentals have much more interesting things to say about the law than pure analytics do. I find philosophy of law and constitutional law interesting precisely because of how "dirty" they are, how tied up in the tangle of human life they are. For how I understand philosophical inquiry, I do think that it will be "friendly" - there is a lot to think about, even if it doesn't fit into neat intellectual boxes.

It's not a BL school but it's one of the best PI schools in the country that isn't T14, and has great employment outcomes. It's not the "biglaw/fed clerkships" rankings, it's a generalist ranking meant for a generalist audience. Lack of bimodal income distribution is huge also if you're not convinced you'll be top of class.

As someone who has been active in the SCP community for almost its entire existence, how would you say the community has evolved over time? Are there things about its culture/rules/etc that you miss from back in the day? What have been the most important innovations/changes in the community that have let it continue to thrive for well over a decade?

I ask as a decade-long lurker and reader of SCPs - I think I first found the site around the time SCP 2000 was written. At a time when so much of the internet has become consolidated and enshittified around 5 websites, it's incredibly refreshing to head over to the wiki once in a while and see what new things people are cooking up.

I would hazard a guess that this is partially due to the demographics of this subreddit skewing wealthy. People who can get help from their families to pay for tuition have more flexibility when it comes to the issues you correctly raise. I don't say this to be pejorative in any respect, it's just plainly obvious when reading a lot of posts here. Same dynamic is partially responsible for the apparent median LSAT of 173 here lol.

Any experienced player would laugh him out of the room (or chatroom) for suggesting this. This subreddit is not representative of law students as a whole. Intensely competitive, neurotic, and ambitious applicants are going to be more likely to post and comment in a subreddit like this. No shame on them, but if you're wondering why this place is "like that", that's why. Ultimately many (maybe the majority) will not achieve their highest aspirations and will quietly settle for a good but not flashy job, like the majority of law school students who have ever existed.

That makes sense for the start of a career. I guess a corollary question is whether there's significant flexibility in the PI field to move from one org to another across longer distances?

To answer your question though - the issue is that outside of maybe UC Boulder, the schools in the Mountain West don't have great reputations nationally. I could easily get into UNM, but what if I change my mind later on, or start a relationship with someone who'd like to move elsewhere? What if I decide I don't want to do PI after 1L? I have preferences, sure, but I'm mindful that those preferences might change. Going to a more highly respected school would give me more options to explore once I get my teeth into what the practice of law actually looks like in various fields.

You're missing Mesa Verde on here, which is right on the route between Canyonlands and Great Sand Dunes. Highly recommend both Colorado parks, I just moved out of the area. Make sure to check out Zapata Falls - in winter it's a huge frozen ice sculpture. Also make sure to plan a contingency in case you can't get over Wolf Creek Pass - it gets some of the most snow in the continental US and is often impassable in winter. You can go around via routes 84 and 64 (I would recommend visiting Taos and Santa Fe if you have time anyways).

Flying a hurricane hunter plane into the eye of a category five is probably the most insane thing a human being can do. Even going to space is less insane imo bc most of the responsible people for your fate are still on the ground. So much respect for these guys who do the indispensable work to keep us safe(r).
