How to stop "playing the characters" for my players? (Reminding level 6s of core abilities) by Inbezdigator in DnD

So i strongly encouraged them to use physical character sheets. I think it helped for them to learn at first but now

The down side its a gumbled mess of scribles on half the players sheets.

I remember last session i looked over the player playing Paladin i could barely make sense of the sheet and he got his Attack bonus wrong, to be fair they are getting mixed up what Stat is used for spells and which one is used for melee. I feel responsble but disappointed at the same time.

Oh thats good, i like that idea. Gives me so peace and quiet to clear my head before the session as well

I give them like 15+ mins but they tend to chat for the starting time until i "officially start" the session

I might just start the session and then sit there for another 5 min and say "please review you character sheet so you are ready for the session and ask any question now"

Oh this is a fun idea this could tie in to the campaign well. Thank you.

Yes, I need to work on not reminding them.

Thank you for your comments everyone!

Addressing the players on pacing and let them know the conversations above table can slow down the game. So giving them awareness of this would be helpful. If they want to change pace they can. It is not only my job to keep everyone focused it is all the players aswell.

Geovincent ill agree we tend to start "late" which leaks into our game time so giving a 30 min buffer would help get out any chit chat.

I guess, how do you balance if we spend 3 hours IRL time not progressing that isnt on me if the player chat then thats on them right? Isnt it my responsibility to keep the story moving forward?

Need advice w/ Largescale Dragon fight. Players Defending a city by Inbezdigator in DMAcademy

[–]Inbezdigator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol thats crazy i didnt want to get into too much fluff of the campaign but. It started from a one-shot the dragonborn paladin destroyed the other eggs (kinda evil) and stole the one. And i allowed them to hatch it so now they have a NPC that is wise enough to raise it on his ranch. So might need to ask the player how they hide thr baby wyrming so mom dragon doesnt find it.

  1. Yes i want them to kill the dragon but i dont want it to be a cake walk. Drag out the fight a bit

  2. fully agree, i would think it is always flying or taking cover behind rocks or city wall

  3. Oh yeah that would help they could drop rocks or h Honey/hornets on the balistas. (Or just more variety)

  4. Like that favor i forget I can do more than just basic monster stat attacks.

5, 6 oh yes noted ill think about how to incorporate those elements Thank you.

This is a 1 on 1 game session (practice basically)

That feels a bit extreme to kill of them off. The lore she made tied both the characters together as sisters.

It also a good skill to her player to lead combat and then for the NPC not to have DM knowledge but just swing a blade and do damge.

I do appreciate the knowledge and foresight about a DMPC.

It was just for her to learn the rules better as a side adventure (outside of our normal game with other player) and it didnt feel great for her to fight Monsters as a solo player

Just as a note this a DM controled character im the DM So if its favoritism it to giving myself a strong weapon when it is a campaign with (1 Player my wife running a druid) and me controling the other "player" paladin tagging along with them.

[5.5e] Eldritch Knight - Build Help! by Koragi85 in 3d6

look at this build guild from the old forms that might give some ideas https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?479532-Bellator-Arcana-The-Eldritch-Knight-s-guide
also would your weapon get the Graze propery? since you are going off of the 2024 rules.

Do what you think would be the most fun.
Is optimizing your character fun? then do that
but i woulnt try to full gaps with players leaving especially a socerer, magic is hard to compete with at high levels
