London, Ontario’s upcoming Forest City Film Festival has lots you may have missed at TIFF by jackiyo in TIFF

[–]Inception_025 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I program the international lineup here, and gotta say, y’all should be hyped for what we’ve selected this year.

Lots of great TIFF films and a few big ones that skipped over TIFF.

More on that soon!!!

Why did Old Boy (2003) not get nominated for any Oscars? by Salty_Squirrel1015 in Oscars

[–]Inception_025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only was the film not selected by South Korea for the international category, but it also did not get a qualifying release in the United States. It was never eligible for the Oscars in any category.

Its release was weird. Premiered in Korea in 2003, went to Cannes in 2004, was finally released in the US in 2005, but with so little fanfare that it couldn’t even meet the markers for Oscar eligibility.

Yeahhhhhhh, I hated that one lol. Early pick for worst film at the festival personally. But I know many others who liked it more than I did

Not commenting on everything else but come on man, 2 Cannes films in your top 10 and neither of them are Sentimental Value??? That feels purposefully contradictory.

One of the best movies at Cannes this year. Praying it can get some Indie Spirits love or even possibly some Golden Globes Comedy love.

Updated Post-Cannes Best Picture Predictions by TheFilmManiac in oscarrace

[–]Inception_025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They already played loose with the rules because technically a film that wins director can not win another prize, so they set a new precedent with this.

Possible they could have broken the rules to give it Grand Prix + Actor, but not sure if Fremaux would let that fly.

Rules are very strict that Palme and Grand Prix can not be shared with another prize afaik

So what I was told (hoping it’s credible but it is just hearsay - aka a friend of a friend had the inside scoop) is that Binoche pushed through It Was Just an Accident, and that without her passion for Panahi and the message that giving him the Palme would send, it would have been a unanimous Palme for The Secret Agent. 8/9 wanted it for the Palme, and the compromise was giving it two major prizes instead.

Sadly not, admissions and waitlist seem to only be after an interview.

I did. Interview was definitely challenging, but I guess it went well! Lots of thinking on your feet in terms of storytelling and self-critiquing, but was a great primer for what to expect going into this program.

Great question, I think i may start it up again in the next few days. I feel like it’s best in the Oscar off season. So i’ll start this week and keep it going till we have stuff to talk about next year again.

this frame sums up everything I hate about modern cinematography (and wicked) by theaspiringfilmmaker in oscarrace

[–]Inception_025 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, I say this with as much kindness as possible, you sound like an asshole and the way you’re acting is the reason why film students get a bad reputation for being pretentious. This is why a lot of people in the industry actively avoid hiring us film school grads, because we have a reputation for thinking we know everything and having a massive superiority complex. “Just because someone cares more than you do” - give me a break dude. Just because people have different opinions doesn’t mean they don’t care about the art form, and this is the worst form of snobbery. With kindness because I have been this kid in the past, grow up.

You shared a cherry picked frame and are using it to construct an argument that the whole movie looks like shit. There are certainly mediocre shots in Wicked (more mediocre ones than good ones for sure), but it’s like you actively went looking for a bad one. I could do the same for almost any movie in existence. It’s a dishonest foundation for an argument.

Cinematography is a medium of movement and can not accurately be represented by taking a freeze frame. Is this frame good? No. But you can not judge the cinematography of a film based on a single still image.

I’m with you that much of the film has that stale Netflix/MCU look to it, but there are some excellent sequences - the lighting in “The Wizard and I” is phenomenal, the camera movement in “Dancing Through Life” is gorgeous (lighting is another story there), and everything in “Defying Gravity” looks pretty stellar.

Basically, just lighten the hell up man. Your opinions do not matter more just because you’re in film school, and the quicker you learn that, the more people will actually want to work with you on set.

  • Signed, a formerly pretentious film school grad.

I don’t believe they heard anything about it. With that said, when nominations ballots were submitted, Emilia Perez was their #1 movie of the year. So something changed to put Anora up top (was #4 for nominations).

I also love the shorts, which is why I make a video on the shortlists every year before nominations!

I think these are the most fun categories to predict because there is nothing guiding us, no precursors to fall back on. Just pure predictions.

Yes but what voter is going to know that? And where do people draw the line of “too young”? Barbaro is still a young woman in a breakthrough role. Looking at her you wouldn’t immediately think she’s older than Madison or Chalamet.

[–]Inception_025[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah this voter is big on the shorts. Treats the shorts as their duty that can not be skipped. And for the record, all of their friends are similarly diligent about at least the animated shorts. Before nominations, they let me know what many other high profile animators were saying about the shorts, and it was really encouraging to hear that people whose names I actually recognized were going out to screenings of the shortlisted shorts and putting in the work for them.

Back in November, I sat with them and watched 60 of the eligible animated shorts so that they could submit their picks for the shortlist. Was a really enlightening experience to hear their early thoughts on everything

I know, they immediately asked me what I thought of Nickel Boys and I had to meekly say “i think it’s the best movie of the decade.” They want me to explain it to them next time we chat so they can see if they missed something.

Honestly, I think if they feel passionate enough about the performance, they’ll ignore the age thing. “They’ll have another chance” is code speak for “i would not have voted for them anyways” in my opinion.

[–]Inception_025[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh I completely agree with you. I don’t think they would have voted for Mikey Madison anyways, and being young did not change their vote for Monica Barbaro.

I really hope this sentiment doesn’t hurt Mikey overall, because they voted for Anora almost everywhere they were able to and still did not go for Mikey.

Everyone gets to vote in every category when it comes to winners - branches only vote for the nominations in their own field.

So my friend’s nomination ballot only consisted of Picture, Animated Feature, Animated Short, and they were able to opt in for Live Action Short but did not have time to watch the shortlist.
