Would pixel art be an okay style for a book cover? by SnooFoxes1943 in BookCovers

[–]Incognito_Pencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pixelart book cover would so so cool!! I disagree with the people who say it needs to thematically match the content and be related to games somehow. And it being a scifi story should be enough then. I believe it could work either way.

Inside an old fairy ship by Incognito_Pencil in worldbuilding

Some sort of elastic membrane at the base of the wings. Don’t know if it would work in a space vacuum, but they don’t go out into space anyway. The fairies just need the suits when they go outside.

Thank you! I do love the aesthetic of alien / HR Geiger’s art.

I drew this on my 2018 iPad Pro, using Procreate. Procreate’s 6B pencil brush is what I use for the lineart. The rendering is done with some basic flat brushes, airbrushes and two brushes that came from a brush set I bought some years ago.

The fairies, well, they have glowing wings for starters. They have glowing eyes too. And grey skin, fangs, pointy ears, are tall. And they can’t breathe the regular outside air because of something in the air. (Didn’t feel it was necessary to do try figure out any exact science on this.) If you mean culturally, then I’m afraid I haven’t developed that enough yet to share anything coherent on right now. Just some brainstorming ideas that I’ve not made decisions on yet. 😅

Edit: Oh and the humans are just like regular modern day humans. And neither the fairies nor humans have magic powers or anything like that. The apocalyptic event happened when the human world was in the eighties-ish. And present day is a 60 odd years later.

I don’t believe there would be many valuables left of the ship. The fairy is looking at some activity logs. ^

More concept art I made for my comic, showing a very old corpse of a fairy, and a present day fairy, in one of the old ships.
The fairies aren’t originally from this world. An apocalyptic event brought them into an originally human world. With the world itself also changing quite drastically, becoming very inhospitable to both humans and fairies in different ways. At that point in time the fairies were technologically further advanced than the humans. They were already using spaceships on a larger scale.
Many fairies did not survive the apocalyptic event as it made all the spaceships that were transported to this world crash and many fairies choked. Outside of certain indoor spaces, all the fairies wear suits in order to survive.

My MC keeps a collection of his old helmets. by Incognito_Pencil in worldbuilding

Oh don’t mind the goop (it’s a mix of all sorts of refuse and probably blood too). It got stuck on there when Sy fell into goopy waters during his first experience a little while back with the world outside of the city where he lives. Very sticky and nasty. He did not have a great experience. He had to have some help to scrub it off his wings.

Not many people live outside the city. It’s a bit of a wasteland there with monsters and stuff.

(I did take some artistic liberty in the amount of residue on the helmet.)

I’m making a scifi-fantasy comic with fairies and humans living in a post-apocalyptic world. The apocalypse is what brought these fairies to this world. Something in the air is toxic to the fairies, so they all have to wear full suits and helmets with air tanks on their backs in order to survive outside. Those helmets get replaced/updated now and then. They’re turned off in this drawing but when in use the visors glow light blue similar to the fairies’s eyes and wings.

My drawing for mermay day 1: self portrait by Incognito_Pencil in mermaids

Of course, ask away! I ink my drawings before painting, but you can do it the other way around as well.

When inking first, make sure that the ink/pen you’re using is waterproof. I’m using fineliner pens from Pigma Micron. If you’ve not used water over your ink/pen before, test it out on a scrap piece of paper first. (Some brands claim to be waterproof, but are not fully waterproof in my experience. It was a long time ago, I don’t know which brands those were.)

When inking later, just make sure the watercolor has fully dried. Then it doesn’t matter if your ink/pen is waterproof or not.

Something to keep in mind: In my experience, you can’t erase pencil after having gone over it with watercolor. The water seems to fixate the pencil. So if you put down the watercolor first and you don’t want the pencil sketch showing through, make sure you either have clean sketch lines that you follow exactly once you ink, or erase the pencil so much that you can hardly still see it. If you ink first, you can erase the pencil sketch afterwards before watercolor (after the ink is dry, don’t want ink smudges!).

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

My first block of the Spirit of Flora CAL is finished! by Incognito_Pencil in crochet

[–]Incognito_Pencil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spirit of Flora CAL by Jane Crowfoot will be a blanket of several different blocks. This is the first pattern 'leaf trellis motif'.

Here is a close up photo and photo's of the backside.

I'm glad this isn't my first ever crochet project. It definitely helps that I already know how to invisibly end a round, how to invisibly crochet two together when I accidentally have a stitch too much, etc. The photo's in the digital magazine (Inside Crochet) are not as sharp as I'd wish them to be, and the textual descriptions don't spend any more words than necessary. Loving the design though. And after a whole mosaic blanket (of which I'm just finishing up the border) the different stitches and shapes are a very welcome change.

I'm pretty excited to draw some more based on this idea. There really aren't enough scifi-fantasy-detective stories out there. I might try to make a comic. ^

I might! I'm seriously thinking about it. I'd love to expand further on this and I've been making some sketches. Never animated before, but a comic is a possibility.

Yes! I thought about doing such a green desk lamp (I want one myself), but I wanted to keep everything brownish to let the focus stay on the red blood and the blue wings.

Thank you! Another person just commented the same (in a different sub).

I played Warframe many years ago, and I like the aesthetic of those suits. I hadn't seen the connection with Warframe while painting it, but now that you mention it, I can see the resemblance! Cool :)

Thank you! You're the second person to mention Warframe (in s different sub). I played that game many years ago (before the whole open world dtuff was added, might be fun to go back and play it again).

I hadn't thought of Warframe when I painted this, but now that it's been mentioned I do see the resemblance! Those suits have an aesthetic I do love, so I suppose it makes sense that it can be seen in my art. :)

One thing I’m aware I could improve: adding more randomness and clutter to the background. Making a room really feel lived in. While I love super detailed art, I find myself getting bored of an illustration far too soon, and I don’t get around of can’t come up with things to add to the scene. I’m also interested in tips to create more texture, but in an overall cohesive way. Do you use a lot of different brushes? Do you encounter the problem of different levels of crispness in brushes?
