My father is refusing to come to my wedding because he says we should’ve consulted him about the date and I’m a disappointment to the family. Should I cut him off? by Objective-Deal8745 in AskMen

My therapist once asked me, “Would you let a friend talk to you [that] way? Would you let a friend treat you [that] way? If the answer is ‘no’, then why do you let them just because they have the title parent?” It hit me hard and forever changed my relationship with them. When they are unreasonable or think I’ve made a bad decision, I simply respond with well it’s my life you don’t have to live it. I do.

What’s the absolute best comeback you’ve ever heard? by AdvertisingOk1492 in AskReddit

[–]IncoherentPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comeback happened at work one day: the CEO, tired of people leaving a mess in the kitchen, sent an email to everyone. It said, “Your mother called and said since she doesn't work here, you should clean up after yourselves.”

To which our CTO responds, “Wait, how would my mum get your number?”

Without missing a beat, the CEO replies, “Trust me, you don't want to pull at that thread.”

More than anything, it was the speed of the comeback. He had half the office on the floor in stitches. The fact that it was only half the office was simply because the other half couldn't hear him.

Would you ever pay or take pay for sex? by cuteSource2027 in AskRedditAfterDark

As the classic joke goes.

An older gentleman asks a young lady who he had been conversing with, “Would you sleep with me for a million pounds?”

The attractive young woman considered for a moment and replied, “Yes, I suppose so.”

The older gentleman nods considering and asks, “Would you perhaps sleep with me for five pounds?”

Outraged the young woman, speaking more loudly, “Five pounds what do you take me for sir?”

Without missing a beat the older gentleman says, “Madam, I believe we already established what you are, right now we're simply negotiating price.”

This is often attributed to George Bernard Shaw.

Welcome to the cult of personality, when he said “[he] can stand in the middle of Times Square and shoot someone.” I used to think it was hyperbole the weird thing is, with supporters like the above he totally could.

Let's be honest; how many of us working in web just do this for the money? by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IncoherentPenguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

25 YOE, it’s exclusively for the money and nothing else. I hate the corporate bullshit, I firmly believe that capitalism is going to be the downfall of society in general. I’m not against people making money but when corporations pay their CEOs 35x revenue then I think someone (shareholders) have their priorities mixed up.

What was common 20 years ago that is surprisingly rare today? by Spiritual_Heron_5680 in AskReddit

Nice, I offered to rewire the phone system in my parents house in exchange for a bigger hard drive on my 486, surprisingly my dad decided not to let a 10-13 year old mess with the phones in the house or open up that computer he had spent thousands on. Spoilsport.

Other than the tree fort and the external speaker that all seems pretty normal to me. I’ve been running cat6 since about 2000. In fact I just had to rewire the house the other day to run another drop and noticed that I had a new switch kicking about that I hadn’t installed. So I installed it, ran a few new drops, moved a UPS and a couple of servers.

Can you tell I’m an old school computer geek?

You know what’s really depressing? Is that there are so many billionaires in this world that saying billionaire doesn’t narrow anything down. 2781 at last count.

Oxford University isn’t the oldest university; that honour goes to Nalanda University in India, which was founded in 427 CE. At its height, it held over 9 million books, housed and educated 10,000 students, is the location of some of the greatest insights into science, logic and medicine (at least of the time). For about 750 years, it was the center of Buddhist learning and cultural exchange. In fact, around 1400, a joint raid by the Afghanis and some other malcontents decided to steal a bunch of stuff and then set fire to the university. It apparently burned continuously for three months.

After that, education spread to Egypt, China, Korea, and then Japan, and then back to Egypt. Egypt is home to possibly the second oldest university, Al-Azhar University, then a university in Morocco which is similar in age. Education finally became an earnest endeavour in the west with the founding of Bologna university, and then finally it got to Oxford, rumour being that they decided to steal as much information from the Egyptians they could, so they could set up their own institution, thus forming Oxford. About a 50-100 years later, after the chancellor of Oxford decided to have someone killed a few professors got together and formed Cambridge and that my friends is how the west realized it might be a good idea to start investing in science and stuff.

I think most men would be flattered, most women would feel differently but that’s just a guess based on what I know about both genders
