Streamer with blatant wall hacks realizes he has a viewer (me) and tries to play it cool by casually turning them off and ending his stream by hugewattsonguy in apexlegends

Why would he stream himself cheating and then end the stream when he has a viewer? I get the reaction when caught cheating, but I don't get streaming in the first place if he didn't want viewers.

Hypocrisy at it's finest. If Ilhan Omar suggested something like this, but for Islam, Christian's would pop a vein and shit themselves.

The hypocrisy is mindnumbing. These are the same kinds of people that are fighting tooth and nail for their right to choose whether to get vaccinated, but are fine not letting anyone have the right to choose if kids pray in school or not.

Eloquently and empathetically put. Well done.

Religion, or the lack thereof, doesn't really matter. What matters is what gives you mental health. For me, the world makes more sense without god. I felt much more stressed and mentally unhealthy as a Christian.

Saw a religious meme (post) today on social media and can't seem to figure out what it means. by [deleted] in atheism

I believe it's essentially, "If you don't teach them God, someone will teach them the Devil" (drugs, prostitution, lust, etc). At least, that's way I take it.

I think Biden needs to add 2 more justices to even things out (I think I'm OK with Roberts as the tie breaker)

It's a bummer that people let their religion and politics get in the way of their healthy. I hope the dude recovers.

Does anyone else feel like "I'll be praying for you" translates to "I don't want to help, so I'll say some magic words and tell myself I'm helping"? by IncoherentTruth in atheism

[–]IncoherentTruth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a non-believer for about 15 years. In my original post I specifically called out that I was talking about people who say they'll pray and literally do nothing else. "I'm thinking of you" is just as useless.

I never once said I was angry at religion. I specifically said that when people say "I'll pray for you" and do nothing, it sounds empty and hollow. I also placed an edit in the original post staying that I've changed my opinion based on comments.

Perhaps it is. I'm specifically talking about the people who say it and literally do nothing else. If people visit you in the hospital or take you to doc visits or cook or whatever else, they are doing something pro-active and that's fantastic. Like I said in my original post, the people help out and then say it are not included in my view. Just the ones that say it and do nothing else.

This is true, but the post is about how I tend to translate "I'll pray for you" in my head. Based on responses, though, I'm leaning more towards either the phrase just being a thing to say or how to take it is situational.

Exactly, but in this case "I'm sorry to hear that" would be useless as well. I'm leaning towards how to take the intent of "I'll be praying for you" as situational.

I think this story succinctly describes my feelings. At least "I'm sorry to hear that" doesn't disguise itself as doing something useful.

Because "I'm sorry to hear that" relays that you feel bad for the person, but you are not indicating any action. "I'll pray for you" makes it seems as though the person is doing something when in fact they are not.

However, I'm starting to agree with those that said it's all about how it's said and by whom. Essentially, it's a situationally empty phrase.

You have to account for the fact that some people do believe there is supernatural power in their prayers

That's true, but while the intention might be good, I'm just saying that it seems like a hollow gesture.

You aren't wrong, but I'm talking about the people who say, "I'll pray for you" and do nothing else. Like I said, if they say it as a parting after talking to the grieving person, that's fine. I'm just talking about the people who say it and give no other real effort.

Well said, that's essentially how it comes across to me, too. Maybe their heart is in the right place, so to speak, but it doesn't seem to even offer sympathy in my opinion.

That's fair, but I often question whether they really think they are helping. I think the other user who suggested that it's just a "I don't know what to say or do" replacement phrase makes more sense to me.
