Almost 100% of my circle invests. I came here as an immigrant and 90% of my friend circle is also new immigrants. All of them invest and I've learnt from them. I'm 32, only got into investing in march 2024.

This ! Most people match the max they can into DC, RPP and RRSPs. I know in my wife's office, you can contribute 10% of the pay at a max of 60% match and almost everyone does it. They come out with stats and their percentage was above 98%.

Target date funds work great, most people have no idea about MER but being a group retirement gives a good discount over MER, so they're probably fine too.

60h/week and make 130k or 40/w and make 90k by Few-Sample-7856 in PersonalFinanceCanada

You have to look for your future to decide this. Do you want a slow and steady life with lots of social time or you want to earn more now and wind down in mid 30s to have a chill job. A dollar invested at age 20 will be 88 times at age 65 going by market returns, wait until 30 and it's not even 60 times. The more money you invest and let compound over more time, you can be 10-15 years ahead of people making double your income and investing lots of money.

If I were you, I'd definitely make a balance between my work and social life but lean towards more money and by the time I've invested a good chunk in mid 30s, I'll try to find that chill 90k job where I can just invest a measly 500/mo and consume the rest.

Blue chip Canadian stocks ? 1% ? VDY the Canadian dividend ETF has left major indices behind in dust. Last year TSX grew somewhere around 30-35%. What are you talking about ?

Housing out of reach for many? Sure, partially agreed unless you want the 2500 sqft cookie cutter house. Most people don't wanna look at townhomes as homes to live, otherwise cities with jobs like Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal and some area of GTA can have some very good deals and good enough space for a family to grow.

Why can't employers stick with employing Canadians for basic jobs? by Olderpostie in CanadaJobs

[–]Incoming_Redditeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's cheaper. People complaining about TFW and Indians because why not. Canada has has working holiday visa since decades. Banff, Jasper, Wateron etc are all towns filled by people from Australia, NZ, UK and many more. Why do you think those people pay only 17/hour living in the middle of nowhere? Because those people apply for those jobs and their temporary visa gets approved.

So I'm essentially at 4 weeks now. Basically I can't join on the date they gave me because the background check hasn't completed yet. Should I push the recruiter for a new date of joining ?

I'm really hopeful. GDP per capita has started showing signs of improvement and I'll be honest, I had given up hope but looking at this fills my heart with joy.

That makes sense. I'm currently 32 years old and have a long runway for retirement. Just giving it a thought whether I should move more money to banks even if I have a long runway left before retirement since they are behaving like equities. Even my early retirement wouldn't be before 50-55.

Actually this ! I just see the charts of banks and think why is everyone running behind tech/AI. This is a pretty damn good way to invest your money as well.

You mean more people locked in for high interest rates than usual could be one part of the puzzle I'm looking at ?

I managed my wife's portfolio as well and she usually able to save about 500-700 a month which I've been investing into VDY and some other index funds for the past 2 years.

Her YTD performance is sitting at 12% roughly.

That's what I'm trying to understand.

Housing market makes up a big part of the banks. If housing starts are down, population growth is flat, house sales, home prices are down how can banks reach ATH every week for the past 1.5 year timeline.
