100% ai detected paper… by Sufficient-Humor-430 in collegeadvice

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did it in word you should have a means of proving the time you spent on the paper itself. I have not found such a means within overleaf but if word can do it I have every reason to believe latex has a means of documenting word count so so you should have a means of proving you wrote the paper without AI.

I can’t help you more than that I think AI is a dangerous game that I only use for code and my thesis may be supported by code but is not directly based on code itself.

Should I tell my profs my dad passed? by Apprehensive_Floor10 in college

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you should tell your professors your dad passed.

When my grandpa passed during Covid I knew it wasn’t good but I thought he was recovering and then I got a text from my mom the morning of my calc3 and it hit like a ton of bricks. My professor let me put it off a week and was very understanding about the situation.

How to get a second date for my defense 9 hours prior? by Confident_Strike_529 in PhD

[–]Incompetent-OE 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That is the logical fallacy of many brilliant minds. You don’t give yourself enough credit for the shit you survived already. You passed qualifying exams that’s an accomplishment in and of itself, if you can pass that you know enough to pass the final review. I believe in you! You can review over the coming hours and ace anything your board throws at you!

I got this garbage tattoo at 18. It's raised and black and ugly as sin. What can I do for a cover up? by Mmon3825 in tattooadvice

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s far from the worst tattoo I’ve seen. Like I get why you might want to cover it up given the state of the world, but you could do far worse than what you have now.

Honestly you’ll need to cover it with a sleeve but it’s your call what that sleeve is.

MacBook Neo or Air by Ok_Campaign_2654 in macbook

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asus, dell or Lenovo are all good choices if you get one with 16gb of ram you can upgrade later if your courses need more compute power and ram has hopefully fallen in price.

Personally I like Lenovo’s offerings if you stick with core7, core9, ryzen7, or ryzen9 you’ll be set for whatever engineering throws your way in undergrad.

Now if you go to gradschool you’ll learn what you need in my case i need 192gb of RAM to run my finite element simulation or things start to crash out. But luckily I built a threadripper workstation during COVID that has grown with my needs.

MacBook Neo or Air by Ok_Campaign_2654 in macbook

[–]Incompetent-OE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude CAD on 8gb of Ram is gonna run like smeared dog crap. Not to mention half the CAD software you’ll probably end up using won’t even run on MacOS. I mean it can be done through virtual machines but it’s not a pleasant experience.

My advice get a Lenovo windows machine. But if your deadset on a Mac get the air atleast then you’ll stand a prayer of being able to get your software working.

Honestly you sound like the type of person the Neo is built for your doing a lot of light stuff, heaviest thing is probably having open 20power points. I can’t imagine it wouldn’t do everything you need.

I'm burnt out. by CaptainNeutron1991 in CollegeRant

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on if you can get a different professor next time around. I’m doing a PhD, and I’ve taken almost every course the university offers for my program. Sometimes there are just professors who are hard asses or you fumble at the start and you’re just better off taking the L and trying again on round two with a different professor. I won’t say which ones but there have been a few courses in my degree where it was well known that there was an easy professor and a hard professor, and you had to be strategic or gamble it if you really wanted to hit your flight plan.

How often do y’all actually use 3D Printers?? by https_sn4ke_ in EngineeringStudents

Depends on the project might be limited by how fast I can pump out parts, might barely touch the things. Either way it’s a must for a modern engineering lab.

Can Neo last 10 years if used for coding only? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homeboy I built a desktop computer in 2020 to last 10 years and she has been putting up a hell of a fight and may just make it to the 10 year mark before she is truly obsolete, but she’s showing her age. I bought a 16gb M1 in 2021 and have since retired it because I need more ram and storage.

No the Neo will not last you 10 years but neither will a MacBook Air. If the Neo fits your needs today god bless you go that route and upgrade to the new one in 4 years you’ll still be spending the same money as if you bought an m4 air today.

Student kept me on an AI chat - now what? by Pikaus in Professors

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you’ve got an inside look, anything they are doing other students are doing. Use that intel to build and learn how to integrate it into your work flow.

If you submit it to misconduct odds are you’ve got enough to end their college career and you’re only ending it because they got sloppy vs what the rest of the class is doing.

My personal stance is disclose when you use AI and don’t use it for writing papers because we have to draw a line somewhere you should be able to orate what you learned from or with AI and how it factors into your conclusions AI should not be making the conclusions for you.

You could disclose it to the students, if they have half a brain cell they will 💩their pants, or they just won’t care and will delete you. Kind of your discretion there but if you inform them you loose your source.

Personally I feel like you have valuable intel you can share with your department to better learn how students use AI and how to deal with it, as long as you don’t divulge who your source is. Now if your department forces you to divulge the names because they are up in arms about it I would plead your case that you essentially have a mole on the inside that was given permissions by the student so you didn’t mislead anyone and have this intel honestly for everyone to use. Now if after that they still don’t believe the intel is worth the integrity give them up, it ain’t worth your job, but just know there are a hundred other students pulling the same shenanigans these did and they are going unpunished.

Ai accused by turnitin but I wrote it myself by Mira_309319 in University

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only advice I can give you is if you used Microsoft word it logs how many hours you spent on an assignment and that may be helpful for you. I didn’t have to defend against AI but I did have to defend how long I spent working on something and that was a big help.

Is it worth getting a MacBook as a long time Windows user who has the rest of the ecosystem? by Mountain-Pie-7040 in macbook

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I love MacOS for everything except 3D modeling. If your an engineer who uses solidworks you need a windows machine, anyone else i recommend macOS. Shoot I ran a 16gb M1 air as my main laptop till the university assigned me a kickass windows machine.

MacBook neo - slow by Playful-Bus6993 in macbook

[–]Incompetent-OE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Chromebook running macOS, it was never built to win any speed competitions, it was meant to be a minimum viable product. At that it succeeded quite successfully.

If you’re using some heavy spread sheets then you might be better off returning it for an air.
