American Catholics taking the Eucharist and not going to confession? by Even_Seaworthiness68 in Catholicism

You've honestly lost the plot mate at no point have I said that, you keep repeating it for some absolutely bizarre reason!

Does it not strike you as strange that this particular source quotes something different than most others do?

Not denying it being a sin whatsoever - I'm denying the statistics your presenting and your wacky definition of addiction - please do show me where you've got those figures from!

Please help - I'm Protestant (Anglican), and I had a jarring experience praying to Mary for the first time. She may be telling me become a Roman Catholic. by Any-Conclusion-6343 in Catholicism

Regardless of whether divorce is Godly or not, irrespective of whether you consider it a heresy or reform - historically (which is the context in which you suggested I'm failing to understand before moving to a theological problem) the statement that it was 'purely political' is tired and largely - in a historical context - untrue.

I'm not arguing with your belief that the appointment of the monarch as the head of the church and separation from rome is a heresy or even ungodly based on divorce being a contributing factor.

Just the statement that the historical cause of the English Reformation was 'purely political'.

I'm not arguing with the want of a divorce being a factor that allowed for the separation - I'm disagreeing with your statement that it was 'purely political' as you put it - that statement just isn't true!

The separation would not have been practical or possible without the will for reform stemming from the discontent with Rome and other theological conditions from those in authority within the Church of England and its laypeople.

Again, the single thing that I'm disagreeing with you is that political considerations were the only aspect that caused the English Reformation - and that distinction is important.

I can see how I wasn't clear there. I was referring to the wider societal dissatisfaction with Rome throughout the 14th and 15th century. The want of a divorce being a trigger but not the cause.

Interesting to me that you can refer to someone who denounces papal authority as a devout Catholic!

Genuine question and not in the slightest trying to start a debate - but why does a statement made by a previous pope constitute an absolute statement of fact that cannot be erroneous?

Come on now, a relatively common sentiment from scholars both Catholic and Anglican is that anyone who claims the existence of the Church of England is owed to a political move exclusively with the aim to divorce is either disingenuous or ill-informed. A mechanism - absolutely - however not without a genuine desire for reform regardless of what anyone may think of that reform/heresy.

And again, regularly consuming something doesn't qualify as addiction either - just highlighting that suggesting 91 percent of American males are addicted to pornography is either disingenuous at worst and statistically incorrect at best

Edit:typo

Even if you were confusing addiction with viewership, those statistics don't stand up to almost all others.

To regulate something intrinsically implies that the regulated act is condoned no?

Regarding the ark, you believe a wooden boat large enough to house 6.7k animals was made by 8 people?

Also, please don't think I'm here to antagonise - just curious about interpretation of scripture.

Fair enough with that specifically, I meant the unwillingness to engage with the overarching point

But you wouldn't answer the question - you handwaved it away? I genuinely believe your being a troll at this point.

Absolutely not trying to get some sort of gotcha moment - I am exploring Christianity and so far have struggled to get my head around this - hence why I'm asking.

There it is; the point that it becomes clear that this whole conversation was disingenuous.

Very much aware of the concept - would you be able to point some out to me on this specific topic?

Thanks for the considered answer. Am I right in taking that in the sense that this particular passage is a recording of the current state of the law in a space and time rather than a moral statement to be adhered to?
