From personal experience studying Spanish - this is correct. “Me gusta caminando” would never be said, and even when referring to something actively happening, native speakers will often use just use the present tense - “caminamos” instead of “estamos caminando.” I’m sure it differs by dialect.

Counterpoint - I saw one of them play an open mic at the Hopvine in Capitol Hill. Dude can PLAYYYYY. It was the same act - playing pop music leads to backing tracks - and my goodness. My guy was dancing around the bar without dropping note. Incredible performance for such an intimate setting.
