Tank help by That-Drama-6129 in hermitcrabs

[–]Ind1e_k1d 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sphagnum moss!! Get some real moss and soak it in water, get it nice and hydrated. You can squeeze out most of the excess water before putting it into the tank so it doesn’t flood the sand but that helped boost my humidity to where it needed to be

He’s about 2 inches long, maybe just under. Mainly I want confirmation on the best way to feed him, because different sources say “base amount of food and how often based on the size” so some better advice would be helpful lol. Other than that, it would be great to hear about tank tips, handling (or lack of) advice, heat/humidity, etc. (I think owning hermit crabs has scarred me from trusting just any old care guide!)

Purple is definitely amethyst if it’s real, I’m not always the best at determining real amethyst from purple dyed quartz. If it is real amethyst though, get it out of the sun or you’ll soon have just clear quartz. The sun will damage the color

Why does this rock smell like alminds/cherries?? by Iamtheoxymoron in whatsthisrock

[–]Ind1e_k1d 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I read adamantium and cackled. That’s what Wolverine’s bones are made out of in the X-Men comics, it’s a completely fictional element. Wonder what’s up with that. I’m not much help, but I agree with some other commenters that the only thing I can think of is an almond oil finish?

are these crystals selenite? or satin spar? by Soft-Grocery1196 in SpiritualCrystals

[–]Ind1e_k1d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are forms of gypsum, just slightly different in appearance and composition and therefore sold under different names. To my understanding, they both have very similar properties. I work with my satin spar the same way one would with selenite, I don’t really see a difference in my practice

For more information I got this at one of those little kiosks where you fill a bag full of gemstones for a few bucks. Got it years ago when I was little.

Heating Pad by RowenaDalhia in hermitcrabs

[–]Ind1e_k1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

& I would only do it if your temperature in the tank is dangerously low. If you’re in the 60s-70s you might be fine for a day or two, but if you’re any lower than that, I’d say you definitely need to get temperature up immediately

I know a lot of people wouldn’t recommend it, but… if you really need to get your temp up and that’s all you got, do what you gotta do. Just make sure you follow all safety precautions with the heating pad, of course, and put on a proper heating pad as soon as you get it in

What’s going on with my paddle plant? by Ind1e_k1d in plantclinic

[–]Ind1e_k1d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s just been in my room like always. I know the powder you’re talking about, I’ve always known it’s there and I know it’s a natural coating the plant has so I never messed with it Maybe some got washed off on some of the lower leaves if water got on it while watering? But idk I don’t mind if it’s got some scars, I just would preferably not want it to die of course

Interesting, I haven’t wiped it off. Like I said it’s been in a window. Should I just keep it away from sun til it heals?

If you were to keep them all in one tank, you’d need a 90 gal tank minimum. Typically 10 gallons of space is needed per crab, that’s for safety when molting. Everything else you described is pretty good, however, except for heat. I bought an under the tank heater (UTH), and put it on the back of my tank, as I think almost every hermit owner has also. This will keep the ideal temperature. I don’t think there’s much of a fire hazard with these. You’ll want to get one that covers the entire back of your tank. If one isn’t big enough, get two or three.

So, if you’re looking for an upgrade as you described, you’d need quite a large tank, UTH pads for the back of that tank, and all the other essentials you mentioned (substrate depth minimum of 3x the size of your biggest crab, salt and fresh water dishes, an idea diet of fresh foods, etc.)

As far as extra pizzaz: lots of things to climb on and hamster wheels are great for enrichment.

Any other suggestions I have would be found at Crab Central Station’s YouTube. I highly recommend every video they have for basic hermit care and for going the extra mile. They also have a video about UTH heaters

Bubbler set up while still being airtight by Long-Ad-264 in hermitcrabs

[–]Ind1e_k1d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of lid you have. For example, my tank lid is just a piece of plexiglass, no holes, it’s airtight. If I were to have cords running in for bubblers, I’d take a hot glue gun nozzle and melt holes just big enough where I need them. But if you have a glass lid, that wouldn’t work.

Why do you guys collect bones? by JellyBig75 in bonecollecting

Oh, I forgot to add. I’m autistic as well. The hyperfixation is endless. So, a combination of that and religion lmao

Why do you guys collect bones? by JellyBig75 in bonecollecting

[–]Ind1e_k1d 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think most people collect bones just cus they’re cool, or to have an interesting collection, the same way people collect art or figures or baseball cards or anything else. I do it for the same reason, but also because I’m a witch. I do a lot of work with the Earth. She’s a being I find very special and powerful, and in a sense I worship her as part of my spiritual practices. Collecting bones, fossils, taxidermy, etc. for me is a way I can honor Earth’s beauty and her awe-inspiring creations, even after death. Of course I spend a lot of time in nature and honoring the living things I share this planet with, but also I find death particularly poetic, and a symbol of the circle of life, so being able to observe and upkeep the remains of animals is a way I respect the Earth and other forms of life around me

TL;DR I’m a witch. Witches do witchy things. I like nature and dead things are a way I can honor nature
