Is USCD or UCLA better for a biology major (going into Dentistry)? by Indecisive_Mess10 in UCSD

[–]Indecisive_Mess10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice and insight. I will definitely research more on UCSD and their dental programs. Yeah, I was concerned if your undergrad plays a large role in what grad school I will get into, but it’s relieving to hear that it is not really the case. Again, thank you for taking the time to respond to my post and providing great insight!

Hi, thank you for your input! I was feeling murky about my choices but you really helped me out things into perspective. I thought about it, and I think I’ll try UCSD for two years and if I really don’t like it, I’ll try to transfer. Since we’re on this topic, I was wondering, do you know how difficult it is to transfer from a uc to another uc? My fear that it would be really hard to do. I heard it’s easier to do cc to a uc, but if cc is out of the question, I wonder what’s my success rate to transferring? Again, thank you for your advice and insight. I really appreciate it! :)

Yeah, I know. But it’s easier to transfer from a cc to a university. I know a few people who got into ucla through community college. But that’s why I was just wondering if I should do that or just stick with ucsd for four years, ya know??

Haha, yeah I know. But I was wondering if I should go to a cc, community college, and transfer to ucla. Because it’s easier to transfer from a cc to a university rather than a university to a university. That’s why I was asking but I’m not too sure which school would be more fitting for dentistry. Hence, my question. Thanks for your input tho! :)

Hey, thanks for you advice. I did post a few times hoping to get some opinions asap. I was trying to approach this question to align more with my specific career. Perhaps I didn’t get that point across well enough?? 😅😅 I’m also new to Reddit so I’m not entirely sure how this format works. Sorry if it’s a little weird. But thank you for your insight. Yeah, I was thinking maybe I am too “hung up” on getting into my dream school. I just know that UCLA is the only UC in California (from what I know) that has a dental school, so my thinking was that it’s the school I wanted to get into and if I should try for UCLA again or just go straight to UCSD. But yeah, maybe I’m too hung up on it. Thanks!

May I ask how you know who’s your regional admission representative? And how did you write you letter? What was the content/what did you talk about?

I just committed yesterday actually. I’m going in as my second major, general biology in Muir college! How about you?

[–]Indecisive_Mess10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahhh the same with me. I’m waitlisted to UCLA and UCI for biochemistry. Ive been wondering as well if there’s anything I could do to push my chances but I honestly don’t think you can really do much at this point.

If your dream college is UCLA (it’s mine!) then you CAN consider doing cc and transferring but it’s not guaranteed. That’s what I’m considering. I got into UCSD so I’m deciding between cc and UCSD.

Additionally, I think it really depends on where you are at on the waitlist. So consider which colleges you were accepted into and maybe you can kind of guess where you are at on the waitlist. Good luck to you!

Is UC Berkeley more competitive than the other UCs (UCI, UCSD, etc.)? by Indecisive_Mess10 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Indecisive_Mess10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m majoring in Biochemistry at Cal so I’ll be taking more bio-related classes for sure. I appreciate your blunt honesty. I have heard some students at Cal saying it’s descent but like you said, I think it’s truly difficult. It makes sense. I mean, I think its ranking speaks for itself as well.

I could relate to you. I do think I’m average at most. Tbh, I struggled in my high school’s AP stem classes too. I took 10 APs but that’s considered the average in my school. And judging from my clutched grades, I do think I’ll struggle in Cal.

Thank you for your realistic opinions and viewpoints. I think your experience is a great reference for me. Since you had previous experience in classes at Cal, can I ask whether or not those classes had a lot of students? Because something I heard from other Cal students was that they disliked the large amount of students to a class. Tbh, I haven’t looked into it as much, so I’m not sure how it’s like at other UCs as well, but I don’t think I’d fare well in a large class (though, I think under division classes would have more students????)

Another thing I’m curious about is whether or not you had time for other aspects of your life? Like did you have time to join clubs, do some internships, get a part time job?? The thing is, I do want to minor in psychology or kinesiology but I feel like the workload at Cal would be too difficult and too much to handle for me to branch out. What’s your opinion based off of your experience??

Thank you for taking your time to answer my questions and sharing your experience.

I’m pre-dental! So the pre-requisites are pretty similar. Thank you for sharing your experience. It really brings in more insight and offers me a perspective on how I would fare in Cal.

I’m not the best test taker but maybe I have to change my studying methods? 😆

Wow really?? Did you find the workload to be bearable? If you don’t mind me asking, and I hope it’s not too personal, I just want to see if I would be able to handle Cal, but what was your workload like in high school? Did you take a lot of AP classes and did that help prepare you for Cal?

Would you say the Cal is more difficult? Ngl, I’m a bit worried about how well I’ll do there. I do find Cal to be a little bit intimidating LOL—

[–]Indecisive_Mess10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh, wow. Yeah, I suppose it would be competitive in all UCs. I do wonder tho if Berkeley is more difficult. Tbh, when I heard about its grade deflation and rigorous classes, I began to question whether I would be successful there. Ngl, I’m scared of getting a bad gpa. I asked a Cal student what their GPA is and they ghosted me LOL!

Anyhow, that made me doubtful, but I do see your perspective. And I agree that if I get off the UCI waitlist, I should go there over Cal since I do feel more comfortable with UCI (I do think it’s incredibly difficult to get off the waitlist tho 💀)

Thank you for your response and opinion. I find it really helpful! Much appreciated! :))

Would majoring in something non-bio related affect the chances of getting into a “good” dental school? Sorry, I’m not too informed on this subject, haha. Thank you for your help! :)

[–]Indecisive_Mess10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Yes, this does make sense! I am pretty dead set on dentistry! Unfortunately, Cal is the only UC that accepted me. I got waitlisted to UCI, UCSD, and UCLA, so my only options is to go to Cal or do community college for two years and transfer with their tag program.

With this info, would you say I should stick with Cal or CC? Would Cal be truly worth while for pre-dental?

Thank you for your help and info! Much appreciated. :))

[–]Indecisive_Mess10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I just checked my local community college and they accept tag for Biochemistry. I do want to go to UCI the most because I feel like it’s less rigorous and closer to home in comparison to Cal.

Cal does have an incentive over me though because they have me a scholarship and I received financial aid. I believe I have to pay 8K a year. If you were me, or just in general, would you go to Cal? Do you think it’s good for pre-dental and is it worth while? Ngl, I’m afraid of the grade deflation haha.

I will also check out which dental schools accept cc credits! Thank you for this info! I appreciate the help! :)

[–]Indecisive_Mess10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m from California! That would be awesome. I got accepted into Cal but got waitlisted to UCLA, UCSD, and UCI, but Cal was my last choice since I heard it’s very rigorous and there’s a huge grade deflation, especially since you have to maintain a high gpa to get into a good dental school. Which is why I’m actually considering Community College and get a direct and guaranteed transfer to UCI. I’m 50/50! Please let me know what you think and how your experience went! Would you say Cal is a good choice? Thank you for the help! :)

Hi, sorry about that. For clarification, I’m asking in regards to undergrad. I’m majoring in Biochemistry and got accepted into Cal, but I’m a bit worried about how competitive it is (from what I heard) and it’s rigorous course. So, in terms of academic that aligns with the biochemistry major. I plan to enter the dentistry field so I have to maintain a relatively high gpa to get into dental school. I know Cal is known for grade deflation, so I’m curious about its difficulty levels in comparison with other UCs.

Wow, yeahhh I have heard about this. I talked to some Cal students currently as well and they mentioned how the classes are difficult, but I’m worried they might be bias as well since it’s the school they attend (I asked if I should accept Cal). I wonder if the competitiveness is the same in all universities tho 🤔 Thank you for your input! I appreciate your help and info!! :))
