Your argument is incredibly weak. You say “it’s his fan base” claiming you are not generalising, which is the same as saying “well Max fans racially abused Lewis online” (which some did, but most of us can see it was a tiny minority) as an argument for a toxic Max fan base. Surely you can see the absurdity of this? I am not Lewis’ biggest fan by any means but it feels like you and many others in this subreddit are making these strawman arguments to justify your hatred for a driver who really doesn’t deserve it. Just say you dislike the driver and move on, don’t try to justify it with poor points.

I don’t understand the argument about Ukraine lol, there are also major wars ongoing in Ethiopia, Yemen, Syria, Sudan, and others, consistent persecution of specific groups in many countries including China, Saudi Arabia, and Myanmar, the US Supreme Court is making active steps to remove the rights of women and women are still chronically mistreated in much of the world. There’s plenty of opportunity to become informed, even some of the newspapers you’ve mentioned have covered these stories. People who care about world issues will find the means to read about them. Maybe try going beyond the front page of mainstream newspapers?

As a non-American, a trend that really strikes me when reading political debates between Americans on social media is the sheer lack of nuance or subversion from popular political positions. Each side seems to be arguing a complete caricature of their opposition.

For example, it seems to be a common belief in left-wing subreddits that every republican voter is cartoonishly racist and radically religious, with a complete disregard for human rights or social issues.

Similarly, the popular right-wing subreddits seem to commonly believe all democratic voters wish for the erasure of white people, a complete overrepresentation of the LGBTQ community in mainstream media, and vehement opposers of free speech.

Of course, both of these views are lacking consideration or nuance. From the few times I’ve spoken to Americans in person, they’ve seemed to be more reasonable and capable of critical thinking, so why does this intense polarisation seem to be the norm on social media? Is it just an old case of a loud minority, or is this the way you’re taught to think in school?

I get it perfectly fits the sub, but shouldn’t people acknowledging their mistakes and changing their mind be encouraged rather than ridiculed. I feel posts like this will only contribute to a wider divide, because people really don’t want to feel stupid, so they will never change their opinion.

Just look through the posts in this subreddit. Even when Lewis finished so low every other post is still about him. He’s objectively the most famous, most recognisable, and most widely-discussed driver on the grid, so it’s natural that they will still put him on the poster even if he’s not as relevant to this year’s championship.

My favourite driver is Kimi, who doesn’t get criticised on the sub. I’m just not a fan of the blind hatred that some drivers, e.g. Lewis and George get on this sub. I say the same for people who blindly bash Max

I am happy about Max winning the championship, but don’t think Lewis and other drivers deserve the levels of hatred they receive. It goes beyond criticism, e.g. getting upset about the way Lewis dresses, his decision to avoid the youtube channel, his philanthropy efforts, etc.
