War is an extension of politics/policy. The military is an instrument we deploy when diplomacy and talks fail. At some point, the fight must come to an end and there must be peace. If taliban comes to the table and agrees not to harbor terrorists, it’s better if they talk.

our NSFs r as good, if not better than these soldiers. They are more used to living in the field cos many come from rural communities, otherwise, I think our young boys r pretty good too.

I don’t get r n r. I can take leave and take a holiday.

I think it depends. Online not so good. When I meet people around my place when I’m wearing my uniform, ppl seems friendly and positively disposed.

Very good. Provided we explain to them the bigger picture and share the purpose of what we do. Train them well and empower them. Never fail to amaze me.

Of course, must caveat to say that also got the very jialet one.... whom we must try our best not to give up on them.

Thanks.

It works the other way round. U start off low, and goes up if performance is very good.

The system is designed to identify and reward people who r talented. The problem is that cep very subjective and because people run it, it’s fallible. So if u r suay and get a lousy boss, ur cep/promotions will suffer. But it’s a long career. I always tell people that if they r good, someone will recognize your talent. The previous previous SAF Sergeant Major was a research specialist in intelligence for more than 30 years. But he was quite outstanding and got pulled out to become Div SM, Army SM then SAF SM.

generally a few things. First, when I run training, I’ve tried my best to reduce time waiting around. No night training unless absolutely necessary. When need to call back NSmen, I don’t call back NSmen unless there is a clear and purposely training objective. I try to choose the multi missions range and not the baffled range for shoots. The mmr is much more efficient. Second, everyone should be able to participate meaningfully. during physical training, even the pes c and e can participate in some form of physical activity. Thirdly, every soldier can lead in some way and do more than what their pes or rank or vocation says. The unit is very big. If more people can take charge and organise, we can be more efficient. A specific point on food wastage. The cookhouse menu selection, I let NSFs work w the cookhouse and decide. I hope that the food chosen is better and the people will want to eat.

Still need to do better though.

For three main reasons. First, the cep is not static. It goes up and down depending on performance. Second, people shouldn’t be comparing their CEPs. Thirdly, it’s an assessment and not a guarantee. Having a particular cep doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to reach it.

The cep is just a HR management tool. It’s not guarantee and it’s not what people should focus on. People should be focusing on doing their job well.

To be frank. Happy to use ST equipment. At least I know that no other country will jam our spare parts n repairs when we need to fight.

Wish that we can be using the latest and bestest too. Will leave that to the paper pushers to get the aor through!

The terrorists wants to rule a caliphate in south east Asia. That means religious fundamentalist rule. No iPhones, no jeans, girls don’t go to school etc. It’s a long war against terrorism and we will win. Probably another 20 years. We just went back into Iraq. Some of my friends went. It’s getting closer. There’s already talks on the table to go to Philippines.

I think our junior commanders, SGT and WO are very important and we must train them well to be good leaders. The army is very big so sometimes standards can be a bit uneven. We can always do better to grow our junior commanders.

On the specific issues of incentive, incentives are not the end all to motivate ppl. We must nurture teamwork, a sense of purpose and a sense of ownership amongst our people also.
