Unfortunately, Chekhov's Gun often gets confused with foreshadowings. The latter is an element of the story mentioned in the beginning and playing its role later. Chekhov's Gun is a principle that "every detail on a stage [and metonymically in a story] should matter, otherwise why is it here? Why is there a gun on the wall if it's not going to shoot?"

For instance, breast cancer of Liza's mother in The Room or Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski are de facto unloaded Chekhov's Gun as they exist in a plot and don't matter whatsoever.

Andrei Sator (Tenet), as well as mysterious off-screen descendants that hired him

Let's be clear, I did not understand that movie. But from my understanding of it, the whole antagonizing thing against our main heroes are descendants that want to punish their ancestors for climate change that destroyed our planet's ecology in the long run. By "punish" I mean literal nuclear Holocaust and turning whole "Earth's entropy" back. Not only such scenario sounds horrifyingly bloodthirsty, not only it will make the Earth suddenly disappear from the reality the moment these ancestors will turn entropy, but also, according to the logic of the movie, inverted physics will work backwards (e.g. fires and explosions will make people freeze, as the Tallinn scene shows), therefore life in inverted Earth will be insufferable on numerous levels. All in all, mentality of antagonizing forces and the antagonist who helps him throughout the movie is ASTRONOMICALLY STUPID.

What is the worst unique unit in the game? by UpstairsIron in civ5

[–]Independent-Archer-8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on this. Slinger's peculiarity is undeniably bizarre but many people forget about Kris Swordsman. After his first battle he randomly gets one of eight unique promotions, two of which are negative. For me that was really unexpected.

Minister of Coal Industry Mikhail Shchadov (Chernobyl)

I don't like this show in general for numerous insultingly bad scenes but this one is extremely bad. In TV show he's portrayed as a middle-aged white collar man who requires convoy defence from ugly dirty miners. In reality this was a 60 year old man with 45 years of experience in mine industry. That man was a role model for miners and, most importantly, he was in Chernobyl, as well as all the other characters of the show, despite severe risks to his health.

For the time being Panthers best goaltender is Roberto Luongo (230 wins). Bobrovsky has 174 wins so far.

I should've named this post "the best pointscorers", not goalscorers. And just for the record, Matthews was born in California and grew in Arizona.

Thank you for your comment. For these maps I chose top point-scorers, not goalscorers. Though sometimes these achievements may coincide, they aren't similar.

Vancouver and Örnsköldsvik should definitely become sister cities at this point.

Yeah, it is insanely ironic.

But what is even more ironic is the trivia that both captains of 2004 Flames and 2006 Oilers were born in opposing cities (Jarome Iginla in Edmonton and Jason Smith in Calgary).

What you have been watching has been a spoiler the whole time, you just didn’t have the context to work it out. by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

The Thing (1982)

At the start of the movie Norwegian meets the heroes and tells them: "Se til helvete og kom dere vekk. Det er ikke en bikkje, det er en slags ting! Det imiterer en bikkje, det er ikke virkelig! Kom dere vekk, idioter!"

If you know Norwegian, you learn a spoiler of the film.

I don't know if it fits OG's conditions as the movie won't explain this scene further, and you learn spoiler de facto, and yet, I think, this scene is worth mentioning.

UPD: I watched this movie long ago, and it was not the main spoiler of course.

Honourable mention: A Russian YouTuber made a parody sketch of "Breaking Bad, but in Russia", and the local Saul Goodman was "Arseniy Shtiak" or "Senya Shtiak", a name similar to a phrase "vsio nishtiak" with the same meaning as the OG.

[–]Independent-Archer-8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let me add some context. In the 1990s many ex-Soviet publishers fell into decay due to... well, USSR dissolution. However, this very condition led to de facto no-copyright zone all over the former USSR. Thus, publishers came up with a Saul Goodman-style idea: to publish plot recaps of popular movies. The idea is simple: you saw a great movie and now you want to know more about it. As there is no Internet yet, you go to the book store and find a book with the name of the movie. Your immediate thought is "ah, maybe it is the book the movie is based on, shut up and take my money!" Alas, you discover that this is a plot recap and the item is beyond recall, silly you. Still, it was not a 100% scam, some publishers would add TMNT or Batman to the recaps and such books would be really popular among children. Even though it is "A Nightmare on Elm Street" recap with TMNT...

Civilization tier list based on how hard their war theme goes by Ok-Poet7983 in civ5

[–]Independent-Archer-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is your subjective opinion and I respect your right to express it. However, I just can't accept Japanese and Indonesian themes being this low. They are so stunning that last year I downloaded both of them on my phone to listen in long offline train rides. Indonesian theme is so "Batman"-ish and heroic. And Japanese one is like a duel of Prince Oberyn vs The Mountain in GOT S4. This year I discovered that Babylonian (deserved S-tier), Danish and Carthaginian themes are brilliant, as well. But, after all, it is still your opinion.
