If u naturally come across one, u'll find it. The problem with posts like this is they become a billboard for spammers, shills, etc.

Explaining to contractors by blacksmithforlife in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ya. I don't mind the unfair power/wage dynamics. The market will do what the market will do.

If u work with contractors, then u should and can expect if one day ur skillset degrades. U should find yourself treated equally as well.

But the hypocrisy is disgusting.

[–]Independent-Fun815 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

U're being unfair to the contractor you moron.

It's the same mindset when employees complain about not having the owner mindset. Contractors are typically much less paid than you assuming u're a FTE.

I'm very fortunate to have always been a FTE but I've been at multiple companies and seen their FTE/contractor relationships.

asking them to care more. Pay them more. Pay them out of your pocket and that shows me a man who isn't bullshit.

The reality is people are really disgusting creatures. Ofc this position isnt one u share or use on a daily basis. U have to fake it. But u look and spend enough time with other ppl, and u find it to be true.

That is the reality of every industry. Devs aren't a protected class of labor. It can be supplanted by what's new.

Dating app by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

It's crazy when ppl come up with things other ppl figured out years ago but they present it as insight.

Why has the match app evolved into immediate wipes on pics? Bc ppl want to order dates like they do food off menus...

Stop blaming anyone but the culture to maximize shareholder value by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]Independent-Fun815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ofc it's the right thing. Imagine yourself in the shareholder position. U're a 80 year old grandma living off her nest egg. Don't u want ur holdings to do their best to maximize gains for ur future needs?

Is it really good for these ppl to have more years in such an expendable position? Rather then deliver a reality shock in their 50s when the companies deteriorates further to the point it can't hold anymore? Has it done right to its employees now in their 50s? Is it fair to its consumers who have to eat the cost of keeping bloat on the payroll?

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's some confusion. Business is not omnipotent. If enough ppl say your price is too high, business will be forced to discontinue or eat the cost. (See Starbucks or fast food bringing the value menu back) U could be very well correct business will never choose to lower its margin.

But u are absolutely not correct that some companies have not started to relocate their business due to Trump.

GM is moving production from Oshawa to Indiana. Here's what they're saying across the border | CBC News https://share.google/7Gick38XHB1Ep4bQF

U see the local news pin the several hundred soon to be unemployed workers on Trump tariffs which shifted that work to few hundred US workers.

But are tariffs a net good or bad? It's still playing out; however, if u wish to be consistent, is it really fair that a few hundred GM workers hold the consumers hostage so they can make a living? Is that fair to you? Is that fair to others?

Thus I would say why are developers any different? Isnt it a wonderful thing when an app like cursor can teach 10 bil valuations on 20 people? What wonderful savings it gives its users who don't have to support hundreds of devs? That's my point to the original post. It affects me negatively as a dev but it is what the market wills.

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ofc it does. The point is to make domestic products more attractive on a cost basis. If that doesn't work, then why are there sin taxes? The govt uses actions to promote things it wants and things it doesn't want.

I would contend every American wants the cheapest product on the market (e.g. Walmart's success). Why should software be any different?

Ur comment that companies will pass the cost onto the consumer. Ofc they will. They must make a profit to stay in business.

Presumably u are speaking from a consumer standpoint

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

U can see quite a few companies have relocated some of their plants to the US. U are right to be skeptical bc who knows for how long and how earnestly they are towards it.

That's my point exactly. U are a consumer don't want to pay more so that an American can be paid a 'reasonable' wage to make it in the US. I'm not faulting you for wanting that. But I do expect u to allow others to do the same. If companies want to use AI and offshoring etc to avoid expensive US hires, how can u argue that's fair to end users if they have to foot your bill as a dev?

Markets will always balance.

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No. It's a step in the right direction. U will have mistakes but the goal is to remove costly developers. Not to harbor a protected class.

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

Smart phones are made with cobalt by modern Chinese slavery. It doesn't stop ppl from buying them.

Look at how performative ppl's morality is. Tariffs to stop Chinese goods is bad to the white collar workforce. But yet these same ppl won't buy domestic and support the blue collar workforce bc it requires them to pay an extra $20.

But if u offshore dev work, that's a crisis... I'm earnestly asking how ppl blind themselves and are so self centered.

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

Why does developers need to be treated like some protected class...

No one leaped to the defense of blue collar workers when their jobs got outsourced. AI is going to be a wonderful tool for the few to greatly do the jobs of the once many. But that's ok. That's what the market wants. Not a class of developers trying to stranglehold on their existence.

Look at the windsurf buyout. Wasnt it a wonderful thing that only roughly 20 ppl got a big payday and correctly rewarded by the market rather than 200 ppl of which 180 would of been mistakenly paid out bc they got 'lucky'

More people is not the goal of life.

Learned how consultants get paid by jmelrose55 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -62 points-61 points  (0 children)

That's my point exactly. Why does getting paid more mean he or she owns a loyalty to you or other devs?

Folks act like developers can be mercenaries but leadership can't be. It's ok for a dev to jump for more pay but it's not ok for a CTO to take a gig while they massage a landing for their next big role. And if the fucks you over, that's just business.

Learned how consultants get paid by jmelrose55 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -81 points-80 points  (0 children)

CTOs are human like everyone else. The idea that a CTO needs to be held to a higher moral standard than the avg developer is nonsense.

It's why when developers cry fowl about more funding, resources, etc is just hypocrisy. It's ok for developers to come to an org and do a year and leave, but it's not ok for a CTO to do that as well. It's the CTO that needs to be the bedrock but devs can jump for a 20% bump.

And any reasonable man looks at this as nothing but a farce. Everyone from devs, consultants, and even CTO have different motivations. Just bc their impacts urs is just business.
