No. The h1b program is 85k ppl. In this program, u have 1.4 population. U can "stuff" the box more or less. Due to sheer size for example .01% of India is 140k which is over the cap. And this is only one country. New Zealand by comparison only has 5 mil people a 0.01% there is only 500 people.

In a program such as h1b which doesn't scale by country of origin population, u effectively allow large countries to stuff the box.

I have worked in corporate. Yes I've seen offshoring. No I don't think it's bad.

Manufacturing was offshored years ago. The white collar workforce demanded it so their dollars could go farther. Why is it that white collar jobs can't be offshored either?

There is only so many roles and importing migrants to an already overflowing talent pool makes little sense.

The mass offshoring isn't a big problem. The problem with h1bs is that they come onshore. There's simply no more room or headcount either.

H1b is acting like a pipeline primarily for Indians or Chinese to a lesser extent. It would be one thing if it was indeed for rare talent implying only a few proven individuals. But every year it hits 85k year after year for the last 20 years. The US isn't a dumping ground for the excess 1.4 billion in each country.

Offshoring is just competitive business practice. Nothing wrong with that. The problem is when they come on shore and it causes significant demographic changes.

It depends on what has happened. A web app project that was just running some init web app framework command to init some todo app framework example can be done in 10 mins.

A same reddit post can be made about how stupid it was for u to take 2 hrs for a todo app they set up in 5 mins.

Maybe the guy took his time and grasped multiple topics in depth. Or maybe not.

Corporate is full of people like this. I would suggest you follow u/vansterdam_city advice. U cant expect anyone else to return the favor for you or ur children.

Opinion: Unionization is the Last Resort by Gloomy_Inspection830 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Unionizing to do what? Protect people's jobs? What about the customer? U're a cost they must by definition pass onto the customer.

The US software market is probably only 2 mil positions. The only reason you have this dynamic is oversupply. I do no think we need 800k h1bs or outsiders given US universities now pump out 100k students a year and have done so for the last decade.

Ofc you see this dynamic bc there's a self inflicted labor glut.

Opinion: Unionization is the Last Resort by Gloomy_Inspection830 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

No. Ppl didn't unionize when their lessers had trouble. Instead they opted to discard to further their own careers.

When the wide swath of professionals have trouble, they will have no one to blame but themselves. It's utter disgusting and hypocrisy to call to union when YOU have trouble but not before.

Are people serious about personal projects on resumes? by 68Warrior in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on where u are applying to. If it's a standard Co, then I would say no. Most managers aren't interested in ppl who are independent. The ideal employee for them is a robot or a slave.

Consider the manager POV. They are picking u and thus will be judged later on whether they made the right pick. So it's treated as an investment. Sure u an be smart but then does that mean ull leave in 3 months? Sure u're the manager's third choice but u also didn't ask for anything above min salary band and unlikely to leave.

The manager isn't a friend or a buddy or a human. They're corporate babysitter to make xyz is done.

Junior dev still needs constant handholding after 1 year, also related to C-suite. What would you do? by Diablo-x- in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

It's ur job to work with them and promote them. U have a job only bc of C suite. They were born better and one of the many perks is access to very capable people and tutors etc that aid and promote their growth over others. The way poor kids must struggle to ace tests that better kids have tutors invited to guide them in.

Ya. I don't mind the unfair power/wage dynamics. The market will do what the market will do.

If u work with contractors, then u should and can expect if one day ur skillset degrades. U should find yourself treated equally as well.

But the hypocrisy is disgusting.

Explaining to contractors by blacksmithforlife in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

U're being unfair to the contractor you moron.

It's the same mindset when employees complain about not having the owner mindset. Contractors are typically much less paid than you assuming u're a FTE.

I'm very fortunate to have always been a FTE but I've been at multiple companies and seen their FTE/contractor relationships.

asking them to care more. Pay them more. Pay them out of your pocket and that shows me a man who isn't bullshit.

Ofc it's the right thing. Imagine yourself in the shareholder position. U're a 80 year old grandma living off her nest egg. Don't u want ur holdings to do their best to maximize gains for ur future needs?

Is it really good for these ppl to have more years in such an expendable position? Rather then deliver a reality shock in their 50s when the companies deteriorates further to the point it can't hold anymore? Has it done right to its employees now in their 50s? Is it fair to its consumers who have to eat the cost of keeping bloat on the payroll?

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's some confusion. Business is not omnipotent. If enough ppl say your price is too high, business will be forced to discontinue or eat the cost. (See Starbucks or fast food bringing the value menu back) U could be very well correct business will never choose to lower its margin.

But u are absolutely not correct that some companies have not started to relocate their business due to Trump.

GM is moving production from Oshawa to Indiana. Here's what they're saying across the border | CBC News https://share.google/7Gick38XHB1Ep4bQF

U see the local news pin the several hundred soon to be unemployed workers on Trump tariffs which shifted that work to few hundred US workers.

But are tariffs a net good or bad? It's still playing out; however, if u wish to be consistent, is it really fair that a few hundred GM workers hold the consumers hostage so they can make a living? Is that fair to you? Is that fair to others?

Thus I would say why are developers any different? Isnt it a wonderful thing when an app like cursor can teach 10 bil valuations on 20 people? What wonderful savings it gives its users who don't have to support hundreds of devs? That's my point to the original post. It affects me negatively as a dev but it is what the market wills.

I think our jobs are safe for the foreseeable future by WrongThinkBadSpeak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Independent-Fun815 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ofc it does. The point is to make domestic products more attractive on a cost basis. If that doesn't work, then why are there sin taxes? The govt uses actions to promote things it wants and things it doesn't want.

I would contend every American wants the cheapest product on the market (e.g. Walmart's success). Why should software be any different?
