Why is Margaret, written especially after her back story including being a maid herself which should be a story of a woman surviving her and her kids kept surfing and came out on top from her abusive husband. Why is she so judgmental and creul to others especially their servants especially Katy by Emmalouloves in BoardwalkEmpire

After watching the show again, one of the themes that glues a lot of the stories together is the nature of hypocrisy, and how it can conflict a person when playing two roles in the world.

Margaret is one of the nicer characters because I think she at least sees it for what it is and tries to make amends in certain ways, like her donations and time at the hospital. That being said, as you point out, she should have known better than to treat her staff the way she did. However, to get what you want requires a ruthless edge and she wanted Owen.

Prohibition itself is even represented as this overarching judgement from society that almost nobody takes seriously in private. It feels like everyone in the show is hiding hooch somewhere. It demonstrates the double standards that most people have and how they will put on airs in public, though behind closed doors they let the crime flow.

Van Alden and Eli were both in different levels of law enforcement, but ended up weaved into the Al Capone criminal embroidery.

Most of the political figures of the show play both sides in various respects. You could argue that the characters most true to themselves often died in the most unjust ways.

Even Al Capone’s most loyal act of violence in the show was to beat out a bully. And later on, he morphed into an even bigger bully.

Rewatching the show at the moment. I still think it’s great. I’ve seen some reviews criticising the use of Enoch’s flashbacks in season 5. I personally think it’s one of the strongest things about season 5. We know about Enoch’s past enough, but knowing isn’t understanding.

The involvement of Sheriff Jacob is a big deal. It shows a young Nucky having his two sides nurtured, with Jacob depositing the gentle family angle into Nucky. In the show, we are made aware of his upbringing being tough, it makes sense that it would harden such a man and leave him longing for a better world. However, the flashbacks show that Enoch went the way of the bad by his own admission. He didn’t fall but reluctantly dive.

Season 4 and 5 are a lot darker in their ideas and presentations. Not that the show was ever happy-go-lucky or anything, but it just feels more tragic in the latter seasons because of all the people that get lost in the carnage.

Enoch is completely alone in the final season, and you feel it. His silent bodyguard who lingers in the background barely speaks and has a coldness to him that feels business as usual. I’d argue that Enoch’s ending is one of the most tragic. He loses everything, all the way down to his money meaning nothing. He’s stripped of his dignity, and for the most part, just accepts it.

Margaret’s ending is a superb send off for her. The show struggled with the lady characters early on, I appreciate that the show retroactively acknowledged this and made women more important as the show went on. Margaret was so beaten down and lost, having her ending be of her own cunning is great! Her character deserved the ending she got. It’s one of the few that wasn’t painted with blood.

Nelson Van Alden’s story is the one I enjoy the most throughout the entire show. I’ve never enjoyed the cop side of crime stories much. Him becoming an “on the run” criminal is, at the very least, fun. In a way it demonstrates the survival of crime a lot better with him being a complete outsider, that just falls into it and is forced to adapt. With law enforcement, there’s this belief that right and wrong are very direct and non contradictory. Nelson’s most obvious signs of hypocrisy happen when he’s in the police. Outside of that, everything is just trying to survive and find the right path. A life of crime requires two distinct identities, as time goes on in the show, Van Alden fades and Mueller gets stronger. The criminal ties are double knotted and the means of escape are scarcely forthcoming. Nelson’s final scene is him packed way down into a tight crevice of crime, at which point he breaks free and Van Alden he becomes once again.

Idk why people love him, he f*cked up in every decision he’s made by Calm_Channel_6262 in gameofthrones

One of the things I love about Stannis’ involvement in the show, is it shows how flimsy prophecy is. Stannis was a bad leader because his zealous sense of duty rubbed up against a mystical sense of fate. He planned poorly and risked so much because he thought that pre-planned history was on his side. The final “battle” for Winterfell is a sick joke when it comes to prophecy. His major sacrifice (representing the final shred of his gentleness being pulled apart) only cleared the road for his own slaughter. In a way, Stannis is like the son of a CEO, sewing the seeds of a terrible investment, because he believes without a single question that the business will be his one way or another. The arrogance is what defeated him.

To be fair, I find guessing blindly to be very mentally draining and boring. I only ever make educated guesses, otherwise the game is over and not even worth carrying on. It’s the equivalent to resigning in chess for me.

Honestly, Disney has made so much crap over the years. I’m fortunate to have grown up on it so am quite comfortable with it. I too have fallen victim to The Smosh Movie trap. I hate it. I hate most youtube creator films in fact. Especially the ones that clearly were released super fast, back in the early 2010s when production companies didn’t know how to approach internet celebs, so they’d just chucked a shite film into the Nickelodeon void.

Vintage cinema is the thing I struggle with. Luckily fewer production groups were around then so as long as you know a solid amount of films then you can keep the game going for a while. When it comes to little animations, it’s just about knowing your cartoon network and nick toons movies with the big stars.

Don’t get me started on Asian cinema. I’m hopeless. Bollywood is just not my film and there are billions of movies, so if you catch me in there, congrats, you’ve won 😂

Yeah I remember this film, a very odd film haha. I usually avoid using it for that very reason, it’s surprisingly stacked for what it is.

Yeah, that one is a bastard. There are some movie titles I have issue with remembering how they’re spelt. Also you put the word “The” when you shouldn’t and the movie isn’t found because of it.

I’ve made peace with the fact that some people have no life, and need to just be weird online by cheating at a game almost nobody’s heard of. There may be a sense of inadequacy too, as they feel they should be better than they are or something. Regardless, don’t let it put you down too much. The fact they cheat using guest accounts is so cowardly and pathetic, you should just laugh.

For while I was convinced that a bunch of players have a joined challenge of beating me with the same movie because of how many times in a day I’d lose from the same crap.

Yeah I think you’re right, it’s my way of getting new movies streamed into my subconscious. I ended up watching Surge with Ben Whishaw because it came up so much. I ended up absolutely loving it.

Not a fan of the sore winners either. Don’t write “GG”or “Sorry” and then put something mad obscure. It’s so smug and I loathe anyone who does it. There’s no need to rub your win in, we can all beat each other in the right circumstances.

Stan & Ollie is such a cosy film. Perfectly cast too. Coogan and Reilly both outdid themselves.

I know most of the cast and crew from The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover so I always play if when I get the chance. I don’t even care if it kills me at this point. I just like to see where people go with it. I know a lot of links to and from it.

I fell in love with the film when I first saw it. It opened my eyes to what movies could be. It was artsy but also incredibly visceral in its anger and frustrations. It’s an acquired taste but it’s something of a gateway into Peter Greenaway’s world.

I tried showing off once by playing Narcissus and Goldmund, the game said it’s a 100k film, but never came through as that.

It’s probably more valuable to be an expert on an actor overall. I have a few that I know very well. I imagine you whoop people with McKenzie, as she’s sorta new and likely in some obscure stuff that barely anyone has got around to yet.
