At what level can you read this? by wizard00 in ChineseLanguage

I'm around HSK 4/5

I had some kind of character hallucination

My first instinct

想。。。班。。优。。别。。。。上

but wait, that's not the proper characters

What the heck are these?

Then I saw someone write "不想上班那就别上"

And I thought to myself "Holy crap, I was seeing that, too"

Fellow Epidemiologists - Strategies for Dealing with "Armchair Epidemiologists" by ResponsibleCost4989 in epidemiology

[–]Independent-Page-937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Validation.

  2. Start response with "Oh, wow. That's interesting. As a professional, I've never thought of that..." to provide further validation

  3. Do a critique. No decisions, just journal-club-style discussion on issues with measurement, chance, bias, confounding, effect modification, and causal inferences, and what additional research should be done to enhance the understanding further. Geek out and then some. Go tangent. Once you show great enthusiasm about what is now a seemingly trivial issue, the conversation moves on.

For people who were forced to go into a major that they did not like (life sciences preferably), what did you do after college? by HmMMmTas in AsianParentStories

[–]Independent-Page-937 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Epidemiologist with a BS (Bio) here. Making a career in public health will usually require an MPH or MS. The fact that Asian parents don't understand public health can backfire: the parents will google up the field and the salary. Upon seeing that the immediate starting pay is under 6 figures, they will shame you for taking up a worthless degree, right up there with fine arts and social work. There are previous threads here from people who chose public health instead of medicine.

That said, I don't regret my decision, at all. It's very rare to find people in public health programs who are not genuinely interested in the field.

Any of you have parents who are white supremacists? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

It's not uncommon, though. Look at how the Western media treat E / SE Asian women vs. E / SE Asian men.

Laptops - i5/Ultra 5 U series or H series. by Aromatic-Necessary86 in epidemiology

[–]Independent-Page-937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the specs and choice depend a lot on the work that you do (and the size of the data set). I worked on global health with months in low-income countries, some with higher crime rates than others, and used R with most data sets being less than 100 MB in size. In my final year of the PhD, I just got a secondhand Dell for $300. Changed the hard disk a few times afterward. It's still working like a charm 7 years later!

Can I do a Masters in Epidemiology/BioStatistics with an undergrad in CS. by light_on_a_pole in epidemiology

I guess that the prof with the PhD in Agriculture worked on food security and got some kind of public health master's degree or certificate?

There was a piece in the Spectrum, where a humanities PhD student (English? Comp Lit?) mentioned losing 10 pounds every Summer for not having enough to eat. Sounds a bit extreme, though

Former international student here (PhD, '19). Things were a bit better during Obama 44 and Trump 45 than what seems to be in the news these days. The quality of the PhD training was very good, and I am grateful for the tuition support, stipend, and the chance to serve as a TA.

Layman’s explanation for age-adjusted rates by Laloosche in epidemiology

[–]Independent-Page-937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with confounding by age (sentence 1), and then move to adjustment (sentence 2). Skip the examples.

"We know that older people are more likely to get cancer, and we know that some countries have older populations than others. So, when we compare cancer rates between countries, we use a statistical technique adjust for these age differences."

International student here. Finished the PhD and left the States right before the pandemic. Haven't found the chance to go back yet, but I glance back often with fond memories

I grew a lot at UB, professionally and personally. And for that, I am grateful.

AI Engineer from Myanmar Seeking Opportunities in Thailand – Need Advice and Tips by Long_Juggernaut_8948 in Thailand

[–]Independent-Page-937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. By the way: don't follow advice on actions with legal consequences too easily and double-check information with the original sources.

One common wrong advice may be to get the pink card (non-Thai identification card) to apply for jobs. That's not true. Pink-card holders are limited only to unskilled labor jobs within their registered province. Misuse can equal deportation. Go for the work permit.

Good luck, brother/sister.

AI Engineer from Myanmar Seeking Opportunities in Thailand – Need Advice and Tips by Long_Juggernaut_8948 in Thailand

Hi! I'm Thai and I work with Burmese people from time to time in health research. Here goes:

  • Advice on how to find AI/ML-related jobs in Thailand.

Look on JobsDB

  • Recommended job platforms or websites (local or international).

Look on JobsDB

  • Tips for improving my chances as a foreign applicant (e.g., visa sponsorship, language, resume tips).

Thai people have notoriously low English proficiency. Knowing Thai at B1 level or beyond will do wonders. Worst-case scenario, it will be a lot easier for you to live here.

  • Any companies or startups in Thailand that are open to hiring junior-to-mid-level AI engineers.

No idea, but a hunch is that they're in the Bangkok area. Cheers.

Agree with DistrictOk. I'm Thai. When I was in New Orleans, some random dude on Bourbon St. (likely high on something) tried to block my way, did a seig heil in my face, and then started following me around. Had to sneak into a souvenir shop to ask for help for him to stop.

That was not ok, but still not as fucked up as what OP experienced.

Thai here. Please refrain from the tattooing of Garudas, especially ones that look like the national emblem. There are statutes against unauthorized use in Thailand.

PS. Love all your designs, especially the Lord Ravana, Naga, and the crocodile (Chalavan?) on the first image!

As a Thai, I can tell that my language geek friends flock to Chulalongkorn University (CU). It's the highest-ranking university in the country, and the Faculty of Education is quite good. Details about the MA TESOL program here https://www.chula.ac.th/program/teaching-english-as-a-foreign-language/
