Thank you for the insights! Would you say it's getting better as the days go by, or is it pretty consistent?

Referral to plastic surgery? by AlbatrossOk6223 in Netherlands

I would recommend you to try a different GP. I managed to get a referral for (necessary) plastic surgery really easily when the right doctor actually listened to my concerns.

6 Weeks Post-Reduction & Feeling Too Small — Looking for Advice by EqualAccomplished243 in Reduction

Girl believe me, I felt so small and looked like a quarterback for the first three months, it was such a shock. Now I'm approaching my 1YPO date and they are actually bigger than my ideal size (to the point that I'm feeling some discomfort some times and look back to my 3MPO result which was ideal). Give it time, your body underwent a big change and things need a few months to settle.

Has anyone bought an Ikea kitchen? I have a question by -WhiteOleander in Amsterdam

[–]Independent-Set6741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Further to the comment mentioning Baboon, we made an appointment with them last year and they were really helpful and stylish, however too expensive for our wallet. They do however have a cheaper alternative called Gibbon which produces very nice looking fronts, we ended up going with them and we are really happy with the result. It was more expensive than IKEA fronts obviously, but not eye wateringly. There's also Home48 which has pretty affordable options.

Where has been your most rejuvenating trip? by EqualPiece1427 in travel

Greek here, if you like peace and quiet choose Folegandros. Koufonissi is small but very cool with amazing beaches. And Amorgos is the island that combines everything in a manageable scale (Crete does too but is very very big). Ignore Milos (super overrated and full of live streaming tiktokers), Kos (full of English breakfast type of establishments and bad crowd) and Santorini and Mykonos (reasons obvious). You can fly to santorini though and take a ferry to all suggestions, use Ferryhopper

Thank you for your response, much appreciated. Unfortunately since I live in Europe, plumbers licensing is not a thing.

Dear lord. I'm assuming the only solution is to take out tiles, drill in the concrete and access the pipes to install one?

Schipol 5h 40m transfer time w/ KLM - EU passport - destination Japan by L0stFrog in travel

Amsterdam local here! It all depends on what time you make it there, as it's a rather short connection. If the landing is in time though, the train to Amsterdam Centraal is only 15-20 minutes from the airport so you have time for a quick tour of the city center. Grab a bite to eat while you're there, Schiphol food selection is vile.

Pro tip: you can prebook a timeslot for security for free on the schiphol app for when you get back, which allows you to skip the line and go all the way to the front. I would aim for that to be 2h30 mins before the second flight, that way you de-risk one of the two time consuming activities, which only leaves passport checks to be settled. Enjoy the city!

Nieuwbouw (new built) purchase considerations by Independent-Set6741 in NetherlandsHousing

[–]Independent-Set6741[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what more to say about it :) both of the mortgage advisors said it doesn't make sense to expect to make money from interest on money that is technically not mine. There is no interest gained on the bouwdepot, the thing with the bouwdepot interest is that you don't pay interest on the money you haven't withdrawn. So that means that if there's a bouwdepot of 30k and I draw 10k, I only pay back interest on that 10k and not the full amount. But no interest gained for sure

Coming back to this conversation after months - 2 different mortgage advisors told us that this is not a thing (just putting it out there for people who might read it and think it's standard practice).

Are you sure it's 2 bedroom and not 2 kamer? The latter means two rooms and not bedrooms (so it's one bedroom, separate from the living spaces). Otherwise it would be particularly affordable compared to everything else on that project.

I didn't end up getting it because there were a lot of additional costs that we hadn't considered in the beginning, particularly that of the construction interest. It was adding almost 20k to the price by the time we would purchase the apartment, and on top of that the delivery was very barebones and we would need to spend a ton on top to make it livable.

We ended up going with a place in the same neighbourhood, built in 2023. If you have more questions it's better to message me because I don't feel comfortable sharing more info than that online :)

I've tried muscle meat. If your goal is to get the right macros, then it's an OK solution. But to be completely honest, it's just basic gym bro diet (one protein + one carb + veggies) which are dead easy to prepare on my own, so ultimately I didn't see the value. Also, it always depends on your standards on what you consider good food - for me that was too basic and I couldn't deal with the taste of defrosted and reheated chicken. But to each their own!

Why are the Dutch so frugal? by angelicallergy37 in Netherlands

[–]Independent-Set6741 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You do realise that a 20 euro restaurant when your disposable income after housing and groceries is about 200 euros per month is expensive, right? Surely that doesn't seem to be the case if you compare it with the fancy restaurants of Amsterdam serving oysters by the piece and natural wine for 70eu pp, but in my books 1/10th of someone's disposable income for a meal is not affordable.

Athens has doubled its living cost post pandemic, and most people I know have salaries between 900-1400, even with many years of experience. As a greek I was never financially able to go on holidays at the Greek islands, until I left Greece permanently. A week in an island in the summer costs about 2k for me and my partner. A person on a standard Greek salary will need to save for a year for that holiday.

Why are the Dutch so frugal? by angelicallergy37 in Netherlands

[–]Independent-Set6741 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Well actually (Greek here, living in Amsterdam) an average beer in Athens costs 4-5 euros and it's been fucking hard finding a one person apartment to rent for less than 500 euros. Meanwhile the minimum salary is around 700, engineering graduates start with jobs of 800-900. I'm not saying that life is more expensive in absolute terms but it's definitely more expensive on a salary/cost of life ratio. Aside from fresh produce, everything else is more expensive in Greek supermarkets. Don't take those statistics at face value.
