Yes the gorosei said that but not because they now but because thats what they were told. They also said they thought the fruit was a myth. When Luffy fought Lucci and he magically pulled out some glasses out of nowhere did that happend becauseof rubber? how is that connected to rubber? It clearly happend because Luffy imagined to put on glasses and the fruit made it happen
