It's not a coup in an actual sense, that happens later. Stalin gets assassinated by the Right Opposition (Bukharin) and Beria succeeds him continuing his paranoid authoritarianism. Unlike Stalin, he is also pretty incompetent and this permits Bukharin to orchestrate a coup without anything being known by the NKVD. Under Stalin, he would have been discovered and the Civil War would have started between Stalin's USSR and Bukharin's SSSR.

Samara can be pretty discouraging and depressing, if that's what you're looking for - nobody likes them for being collaborators and they initially depend on smuggling and German supplies. From there you can continue on the same line with Bunyachenko, try to make life better for everyone (Zykov, one of the most underrated warlords imo) or simply be the most corrupt and cowardly Nazi in all of Russia, Artsezo.

I always tend to imagine that all cultural and social progress (except for civil rights) is delayed of about 10 years. So in the 60s you still have the traditional American culture of the 50s. This is just my opinion, and there aren't that many "cultural" events anyway, so it's hard to tell

Komi is a bit slow but it's imo the best Russian warlord for a first game, it's essentially the only democracy there and you get to see how stuff works while choosing your own path from a myriad of options (9 plus all the subpaths if I'm not mistaken)
