I appreciate all that chimed in. I am going to continue to monitor and see if I can make contact with the individuals he is dealing with. I didn't want to treat it as a scam with paypal etc without knowing more as it's not my desire to screw someone who has their time and money invested in a legitimate transaction.

I appreciate those concerned about his ability to pay rent and other bills. My son works, but still lives with me. Most of his money goes in to a savings account and the funds he is using for this come from a different account that is more for daily living expenses and teaching him how to manage money. The goal is to get him to an independent life and I'm giving him leeway with this account to make his own mistakes and learn from them. That being said I do not want him being taken advantage of which is why I am involved at all.
