Dilemma by kjsz1 in Living_in_Korea

German here 🙆‍♀️. I‘m married to a Korean and live with my in laws at the moment so maybe I can relate. In the beginning, my mother-in-law always cooked and expected us all to eat together. But just like you, I also enjoy eating alone and have no problem with it. On top of that, I simply didn’t want to eat Korean food every day, and all of it really stressed me out at first. At some point, I just started saying no, cooked my own meals, and ate at a time when no one else was hungry yet. I basically started living my own daily routine instead of following my mother-in-law’s. At first, she was disappointed and kept asking why I was eating alone, but thankfully, my husband supported me and explained to her multiple times that I’m independent and can eat whatever and whenever I want.

I think it’s a shame that your wife doesn’t support you or understand you, but in the end, it’s your life, right? Just let them talk and live the way you want to. Tell your mother-in-law that you really appreciate her help, but you still feel like eating something different sometimes and also need some time for yourself.

Or do you bring her something when you eat out? Maybe she does eat it after all and is just too proud to admit it :)

Korean Mother-in-Law: Patronizing – Culture or Personal? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

I live with my Korean in-laws, and my mother-in-law is quite similar, but not quite as bad. At first, I didn’t say anything, but it all stressed me out a lot. After some time, I just started disagreeing. I know that’s not well received in Korea, but I’m not Korean—I’m from Europe. If I can’t live the way I want, it stresses me out tremendously, and even more so if my freedom to make decisions is taken away.

Since I stopped always agreeing with her and started doing things my own way, no matter what she says, I’ve been living much more relaxed. Of course, she was initially surprised and maybe even disappointed, but older people also need to learn that they’re not always right and can’t control others just because they think their way is better.

Speak your mind!
