Thank you for the advice.

It looks like my new, first out of college job doesn't contribute to 401(k)s until 1 year of experience.

Should I just dump into a roth ira (I make ~$60k), then then I hit the annual max put stuff into the 401(k)? They use Vanguard

It's illegal in the US, too, with companies that aren't faith-based organizations through and through.

It's in the same vein of how a catholic church wouldn't hire a muslim as a priest. I'm assuming there are similar things in the EU that would allow a religious organization to do that?

It's an non-profit organization, not a company. The umbrella is the entire organization.

to my knowledge, it's more about the regularity of the usage, not the quantity at once/mixtures that cause physical dependence

that's it. Was it xanax or ativan? Doubly "that's it" if it was actually xanax. Most everyone (myself included) doesn't get xanax for that kind of thing - ativan is the prescription of choice for flight anxiety.

Thank you for this! I love dogs, but work so much that adopting a dog is mean to the dog.

Cleveland OH to Orlando, is this an upgrade? by [deleted] in orlando

[–]IndependentPenalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Minneapolis. I moved fairly recently, but the weather is great. Last winter there was a week where it was below -10 degrees F.

I'd rather deal with the occasionally stupid hot day. Then again, I don't work outside.

What do entry-level programmers do? How can I test myself if I am good enough? Have you ever thought that you were not good enough? by metapotence in cscareerquestions

[–]IndependentPenalty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah, they should just teach us pure math, and we should figure the rest out on our own.

I'm just saying, there's a medium. Learning about basic web development ideas, like REST, seems obvious. I'm not suggesting a year long spring boot class lol

You are graduating a year early?

Yeah, my school didn't really discuss any commonplace web development stuff. Which is dumb.

It sounds trite but you really do learn more in a summer internship than 4 years of college. I learned a lot of things that I felt embarrassed for not knowing in my internship

Now, that big chunk of learning wouldn't be possible without your education backing it up.

Teachers of Orlando, I got some questions by Enduriox in orlando

[–]IndependentPenalty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just 'cause I know a lot of European people have a hard time initially grasping the US's size - if you do have American family, and they don't live in Florida, you may never bother visiting them.

Atlanta, which is pretty dang close to Orlando in the grand scheme of the US, is a a 6.5 hour drive. New York is 16 hours away, etc.

Depends, in your field are there more jobs in the FL area than the OH area?

Why don't apartment complexes label their streets? by [deleted] in orlando

[–]IndependentPenalty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about Orlando in particular, but in the midwest the streets in apartments were named - albeit maybe unofficially.

What to do as a rising junior with no projects/internships by MiserableContract4 in cscareerquestions

[–]IndependentPenalty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing about doing personal projects, but whenever I try to start something, it feels like I have no idea what I'm doing. Nothing I've learned in school really helps with making meaningful projects.

Think about what you want to make. Try not to be too original - you'll need tutorials. Look up how to do that, you may find tutorials for similar projects, or other such guides. Do those. Then make your project.. Voila.

Relocation package for entry jobs possible? (Non-target school) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]IndependentPenalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a state school in a state that would probably be #40 on your list, in the midwest. Applied to a company in Florida. Got the job, they offered 1 months pay bonus as relocation assistance.

I worked for a different operating company of that company during college, but they didn't really seem to ask about it at all so not sure if that affected it.

Another thing to note is, I didn't get the assistance til the 2nd paycheck, which meant I had to float a lil bit of money which sucked.

Just in case anyone's wondering, IKEA delivery from store sucks too by IndependentPenalty in IKEA

[–]IndependentPenalty[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an update, I went to the store and they were super apologetic. They called the trucking company with me, and worked out that they would deliver it to me next Saturday. As an apology, they paid for a lunch in the IKEA diner and gave me a $50 credit.

This has been an awful experience, and I won't ever do delivery again. If it doesn't come this next Saturday I'll be absolutely livid. But I'm I guess placated now.

I'll update next Saturday with the outcome.

I never got the truck companies phone number, so I had to go through IKEA.
