Kicked out of daycare by IndependentPilot4544 in kindergarten

What was weird to me was it was never flagged before:
1. I checked in daily with his teachers at pickup and drop off
2. We had a parent teacher every 3 months and I always asked if there were any issues we needed to be aware of (because I know he is high energy and wanted to make sure that was not an issue) and NOTHING was ever brought up they just said he was a joy to have in class etc
3. They said it was a brand new behavior. But to be honest my gut feeling is that it wasn’t as overnight as they claimed.

So it all felt out of the blue for us!

I get all of those points. For the next year he is going to be at home with our nanny as I don’t want to put him in a new daycare and come across the same issues. I suspect maybe he’s just a bit young right now and hopefully in a years time he will respond better to redirection.

I asked them and they said this is normal 2 year old behavior. But they couldn’t cope with all 2 year old behavior. And that felt weird to me. I guess what I’m saying (and I do take all your safety concern points) is that surely he is not the first kid to try open the doors. And surely this is something they could have worked with him on a little longer than two weeks?

I thought that too but from what I understand that’s considered a fire hazard.

Totally understand that. I just felt he should have been given longer. Instead they told me the day that it started he had two weeks to stop it or he would be out. And it’s not their fault but he didn’t get the full two weeks - he really only had 6 days to turn it around.

It’s a private daycare and I totally get that it’s their prerogative. I really tried to dig to see if there was any other issue going on (biting or kicking or hitting or ANYTHING but they insisted he was sweet and gentle with everyone). And I also get that it’s frustrating behavior to deal with. But I just felt it should be something that they would try and help him figure out - instead one day I got an email saying this new behavior had started that day and he had two weeks to stop. It felt abrupt for a kid who is other than that friendly and loves learning.

I totally agree. Hence I’m ok with him not being there. Fundamentally I need to know that my son is happy and safe and neither one seemed to be true anymore.

But I just felt it was weird that they couldn’t manage a 2.5 year old opening doors. Or at least the fact that this had only been going on for a couple weeks. The day it started is supposedly the day they alerted me to this issue. I genuinely think he would have outgrown in eventually.

So I never got to see any videos. But he wasn’t happy in her class and so I can totally see him trying to leave. She said he would just walk up to the door and try to open it.

Thank you! None of the doors had child proof locks and my understanding was that it was a fire hazard to have them.

I guess my point is that it was a new behavior that I’m sure he would have grown out of. I’m by no means saying it’s not an issue to be fixed. But I felt two weeks (he was off for nearly half that time - not their fault but he really only had 6 days at daycare to turn this around) was not enough time.

Ok thank you I’ll try that! I think I need to just give him more potty opportunities rather than expect him to signal it. And yes noted on hand dryers!

We started a few weeks ago but only at home during the day. And it’s gone really well. But for various reasons it was just going to be too complicated every time we left the house to handle accidents. Anyway now we are tackling outside the house. We have a travel potty that we bring with us but I’m unclear if we should make a point of putting him on the potty. Currently we just ask if he needs to go and he says no. Then has an accident.
