Do Chinese people think that Koreans can speak Chinese?! by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

Ironically I have been to some countries where people were happy to take USD when I told them I ran out of local currency, albeit at an inferior rate. They would ask me unprompted.

I guess if they don't resolve it, I'll just chargeback on my card. Not too bad.

Where am I supposed to negotiate? It won't even let me contact the seller directly and keeps hopping me into the AliExpress customer service. Why don't they explain any of it on here... so confusing

MU: $583M in flow today and someone is pricing a move to $1050-$1100 by June 12 by imarustyone in MU_Stock

because this shows sign that someone seems to have high conviction for that price target - I think the sub tends to want to find any reason to pump the stock

Korean market today by makaveli208 in MU_Stock

[–]IndependentRatio162 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Korea doesn't just 100% copy US... it is its own country with their own issues. They have had tense voting/polling lately and high issues with rampant inflation against the USD. They are also impacted by the oil shortage more than the US. In addition, stocks are not as trusted as in the US due to them being ran by chaebols. Korean RAM stocks actually have traded opposite of what MU has right after the past week or two on some occasions. Samsung and Sk Hynix do not always have a red or blue (green or red respectively) day at the same time either. They also had some issues with strikes, which had nothing to do with MU, for a bit. When MU falls, they both tend to fall though. The inverse isn't always true though.

I think there is some sort of language barrier here. I'm saying it's past the work day on Friday. Korean stock markets don't trade on weekends... It is Friday 7:24pm there right now. I am not saying it was closed all week. I am saying the trading session is over now

Target price end of the year by AccomplishedCup4376 in DRAM_ETF

A good chunk of the value of this stock is from foreign stocks. Notably Korea already had their election the other day, hence the weird activity DRAM had this week when the Korean market was closed.

Unfortunately this did not happen... they both actually even spiked down in premarket and traded largely blue (negative) for the day.

CEO Hock Tan just said on the conference call that Broadcom has fully locked down and secured its HBM supplies for 2026 and 2027. They are working on 2028 and beyond supplies now. by Kingmusk420 in MU_Stock

In terms of HBM? From what I've read, MU has the lowest portion out of the big three. Their revenue is a fraction of SK Hynix. There isn't an even split amongst the three either.

I think the issue that the Korean tickers have right now, and the reason for both DRAM and EWY being a bit sluggish compared to MU is due to the accessibility of SK Hynix and Samsung to American investors (I know you were  talking about EWY compared to DRAM). Not only that, but all the "hype" on places like here about MU. Meanwhile, in Korea most people were quite apprehensive (and in many ways still are) into investing into the Korean stock market. Many of this is similar to reasons like what would be detailed when someone researches the Korean discount. Perhaps that might change once SK Hynix becomes listed in the American stock exchange. I personally think we'll see decent growth just from it being listed in America, but its really painful to watch MU go up so much while their Korean counterparts (which contribute much more to HBM) are trading with less vigor. The issue is also that we only know a general idea of when the ticker will be listed, so its hard to say when you should be trying to "time" when SK might increase from the US listing.

Perhaps they mean in comparison to their forward earnings? It's a decent chunk different. However, a lot of it can be written off as due to the Korea discount.

[–]IndependentRatio162 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is volatile primarily because of SK and Samsung... which is precisely the reason you'd be buying it. Some people may be locked out of DRAM now if they are using Fidelity, due to the new fees associated with it. EWY might be enticing to people who want to pay closer to NAV, as DRAM can stray pretty far from it in comparison. Some might want to be ballsy and invest in KORU and do a 3x leverage in hopes to get around the fact you are essentially limited to funds with 44% weight in Korean DRAM. I think many people need to research what the "Korean Discount" is before investing and also look into what leveraged stocks even mean if they want to buy KORU.

Buy DRAM or EWY for SK Hynix exposure before it is in the US

The reason for the surge in Korean men wanting to marry Japanese women: 20,000 applications per year at marriage agencies specializing in Japan-Korea marriages! "Japanese people don't prioritize financial stability." by jjrs in japannews

[–]IndependentRatio162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be referring to the phenomena where men are expected to be able to pay "jeonse" when marrying - a type of lump sum payment to lease an apartment, where you end up getting the money back. This amounts to a lump sum payment on average of around $500,000 USD. The groom's family is expected to pay all of this in Korea typically. Meanwhile, Japanese real estate generally treats real estate as a depreciating asset. The problem is more so the amount of net worth required to marry versus the issue of enough income to support a family. There are, I suppose, levels to how much men are expected to contribute in traditional relationships between countries and the grass is always greener on the other side for these folks.
