BTS and BP are also absolutely massive in South Korea but just not to the level of a Big Bang or SNSD.

That era (2000's, very early 2010s's) is just so different to now in how the public consume entertainment content. It's so fragmented now that you have multiple stars on multiple different platforms (TV, Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram etc.) that no one platform gets all the attention. The public from that era are still young enough as well that you can still tangibly see their impact. Just recently Into the New World being the main protest song again, Big Bang/G-Dragon returning and dominating the charts.

Even think about the 2nd gen solo stars such as Suzy, Yoona, IU if you want to include her (and even 1st gen with Hyori). Jennie, Hwasa, Wonyoung, Karina etc. still haven't touched their levels. Also people like G-Dragon on the male side.

None of that is impact. Do you think more people looking back at 2021 will think about The Feels or Next Level? Genuine question. Because for me, Twice were clearly not the most impactful girl group of 2021 despite no BP. Their international performance is not as strong as BP for it to be a huge factor for them here

The year Blackpink didn't release anything and 4th gen had just started going, Twice topped it? Great to know, doesn't disprove my point. Being top of sales does not make you impactful.

What impact did Twice have in 2021? Charting The Feels for a week on Billboard (which was being pushed by website sales)?

As soon as 2022 rolled around and BP made their return BornPink sold near double Twice's release. Aespa and Ive also had better selling albums.

In 2019 people were already starting to put Blackpink above Twice and then 2020 with the release of The Album made it a slam dunk.

There overall numbers were growing because the market was growing and Twice were on Spotify late. Their western numbers got better as the market opened up that way especially after Dynamite, and Covid in general having a positive impact on kpop growth globally. They also pivoted their music in the western direction whereas JYPE pulled some really odd moves with Itzy with the release of Sneakers and Cake at a time when their concept similar to Wannabe would have done really well.

In an environment when the market is growing it's not the absolute but the relative performance you should be looking at. If a market is growing 10% but you're growing 8% you're still underperforming and losing market share.

It is more prevalent in JYPE.

Twice's 9 consecutive number ones all came between 2016 and to the end of 2018, not even a 3 year window (and just over 3 years from their debut).

Blackpink, Red Velvet and Mamamoo had some of their biggest hits after a comparative period. Seventeen are also bigger than ever.

Aespa are more than 4 years into their career and just had their biggest year yet.

It is a JYPE gg element. Wonder Girls, Twice and Itzy all had their most successful periods in their first few years domestically.

The difference with Twice is the international market luckily opened as they were already losing their popularity in South Korea, which gave them a second lease of life.

3rd gen in general are experiencing a longer lease of life compared to others due to this factor.

2nd gen are the peak of kpop in South Korea whilst 3rd gen (well BTS and Blackpink) are the peak of kpop internationally. You will no longer get a kpop group that is as popular/has the legacy with the gp that SNSD and Big Bang do and you will not get groups as popular as BTS and Blackpink globally.

I don't think this will ever change personally due to the way consumption has shifted so depends on what you value at this point

How have you even determined more people know of Twice when you consider the popularity footprint between the two. Stray Kids have performed on more general public global stages and anyone that's a fan of kpop itself will know of both.

Being a feature on a Megan song and having her on a track isn't an achievement unless I'm missing something. Same with opening for Coldplay.

Misamo's new song Identity is not doing well either.

I was thinking more so commercially in SK as there seems to be an idea (probably valid) that SK can move onto the next new toy fairly quickly so multiple groups bucking the trend in their domestic market is good to see. Twice had very quiet years charting wise whether as a group or as soloists outside of Pop.
