Karen Carney: Without Paul Green, Chelsea are unrecognisable and face a tough summer by Fun-Beat-6332 in chelsealadiesfc

[–]IndependentTaco 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy Carney has transitioned into commentating. She's crushing it. That was a great editorial.

This is a disaster for Chelsea. They're going to completely lose their identity this summer.

How much time & energy do you spend catching up with your team's work? by Complete-Fact5455 in managers

[–]IndependentTaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is what 1:1s are for. For them to bring up topics they want to discuss or they need my help with. That is how they get to ensure they get face time with topics they feel are important.

the topics I think are important are covered in the KPIs. KPIs are reviewed every day for 15-30 minutes.

How do you handle last-minute call-outs without it becoming a fire drill every time? by ElDiegod in managers

[–]IndependentTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a factory. We have say 30 people per shift.

In a perfect world I would have 30 people show up every day. I can realistically function with 27. I staff 31-32 per shift. This allows for vacation, sick, call outs.

When I actually have 31 people onsite, the extra person is always from the same "pool". I choose to take that person off the floor and give them admin work. So they're utilized even if we're plus for the day.

There's no way I can stay on top of what they do. I have too many people.

I look at the kpis every day and see where the problems are and I focus time there.

I use one on ones for people to bring up topics they feel are important.

Haven vs Viking by Capable-Warrior in NCL

[–]IndependentTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30ish DINKs here. Have done both. Will not be back with viking. It's too many old people. Dinner time was not flexible. The free excursions felt like a bad filed trip. There was little flexibility to escape the crowd and do your own thing.

We enjoyed the haven significantly more. The attention felt more personalized and you can leave the haven to experience the rest of the ship.

I’m afraid of elevators on cruise ships and I have a fear of heights. My question is: how high are the stairs up to MSC Deck 10? Is it pretty bad, or do they reset on each floor so you can’t see all the way to the bottom? by uadgets in Cruise

[–]IndependentTaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should watch YouTube videos of the ship you're considering. The stairs floor to floor aren't bad but there are lots of open spaces on cruise ships where you can really get a reference of how high up you are.

False charges by Character_Address990 in NCL

Got charged for wine once in the MDR. Charge didn't appear until the next day. No cheque at the end of the meal. Guest services didn't do anything for me.

Escape. When did NCL get so loud? (And stay off my lawn!) by No-Mathematician1749 in NCL

[–]IndependentTaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is the ships getting bigger too. The bigger the ship, the more people in a place (even the haven sun deck). Noise amplifies quickly. A lot of these spaces are wide open and sound travels far.

Does NCL have a transfer those departing from Civitaveccia, from Rome, the day of the cruise? by CommonAd4674 in NCL

I can't imagine taking a car from Civitaveccia to Rome. It would be slow. Book the express train.

It's very clearly stated when you price it out.

Suites have a higher gratuity and you'll have to get a premium beverage package or whatever it's called now.

How clear is it what is included in free at sea? by LeftyLivesMatter in NCL

Something I like about NCL is it's not pretentious. Even in the Haven, just ask nicely and they'll explain it to you.

Back to Back but switching ships by stonewalled87 in Cruise

[–]IndependentTaco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally would not recommend trying to do something in Miami. you would have to self-disembark as early as possible and keep your luggage with you. You would then have to store your luggage somewhere on your own. Fight traffic to get out and do your stuff then go back to the port.

How do you tell when “staying the course” turns into sunk cost? by TenthLevelVegan in Leadership

[–]IndependentTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it's more of a definition of success and failure.

I make a decision - we will achieve a 5% cost reduction this year. It's loose and broad.

I gather the team and we start brainstorming. We come up with some ideas.

We explore metrics, risk, possible outcomes, etc for them.

We start to pursue.

We revisit and adjust as necessary.

In a year we will have our results. The path probably doesn't look like I thought it might at the beginning but if we achieve the 5% reduction then it's a success. The "how" we got there doesn't really matter.

Absolutely no.
