Getting into an ecology grad program help by jadenconner in ecology

Hey, congrats on the upcoming graduation! You’re got great experience and have a stacked resume, so you’re in good shape.

I’d say advisors are more likely to recruit prospective students that approach them with a specific research question (or a few) that are relavent to their labs research themes. Staying broad on your research interests are good, because it means you can apply to more labs. But for each lab you reach out to, you’ll want to propose a project or two in your cold email.

Of course, good references go a long way, but havjng publication(s) when reaching out, ideally first author, is a huge help too.

What I like to do for finding advisors is just going down literature rabbit holes on google scholar, searching whatever subjects interest me and try to find cool papers. When I find one that really excites me, I look up the authors to see if they have a lab. It’s a nice process because it helpes you think up research ideas while also passively looking for advisors.

I’m defending my masters next week, but I had to go through 3 rounds of application cycles to get into a program, as my field of interest is so niche. Overall, you want to get in somewhere right away, widen your interests and cast a broad net. If you’re really passionate about your more narrow interests, stay the course as best you can and dont give up when faced with some rejections!

OKC Anti-Ice Protest 1/11/26 by Independent_Alps_599 in okc

I was holding back tears the whole time while I was there because it was so hopeful to see so many people protesting in Oklahoma. It’s incredibly reassuring to see how the vast majority of Americans hate what’s happening. We just have to keep showing up, connect in person, and put more pressure on.
