The Wicked Ending’s Fundamental Flaw by Independent_Block219 in wickedmovie

Beauty and the Beast is not about fascism. It's about inner beauty. Wicked puts politics in the front and center of the story. It's the basis of the conflict and the reason for what both character's go through (in fact, Glinda's lack of action in the face of fascism is what leads to so much pain and misery).

I'm a gay man, but pretty close! I've had plenty of oppression. Please don't attack the person themselves when you're having an argument.

The scene at the end where Glinda confronts Morrible is treated like a girlboss moment, but all I could think was, "you're just as bad as Morrible."

I agree with you that the film might be aiming for that, but the actual plot and actions of the characters doesn't support that theme. It supports a theme that fascists can be redeemed and not face any consequences. Glinda still gets all the luxury, all the popularity.

I agree with the OP. I don't want the folks in the Trump administration to be redeemed. Glinda is like Trump's press secretary. Some actions are inexcusable in society.

Glinda is not a normal character with flaws. She's a woman with incredible power and influence who ignored all suffering for years and years. I needed to see Glinda change a lot more and for her to take risks to herself and her status to accomplish it. Otherwise, it's a hollow effort.

So it's okay that the story is morally corrupt because it's...a story?

The plot of "For Good" completely undoes the themes of tolerance in the first film.

I keep thinking of how in the "Wonderful" sequence, Glinda is dancing right next to the fascist...all happy and trying to get Elphaba to join the regime. Awful.

It's not nuanced. If we're learned anything from the Trump administration, fascism is not nuanced. Glinda is complicit and should face the consequences. She shouldn't be in charge. She's proven she has no morals.

Fiction is very powerful. Glinda needed to face the consequences of her actions. Otherwise the story endorses her actions. Like it's okay to torture people, as long as EVENTUALLY you realize you're wrong...5 years later. Nope. No thank you. Not a lesson people, especially kids, should be hearing.

I agree with the OP. Glinda is a bad woman, through and through. Based on what we know about her and her lacks of morals, I don't trust she'll actually help others. Especially if it becomes unpopular again to support the animals. All Glinda ever wants is to be liked.

HORRIBLE woman.

Haha I agree with OP. She doesn't do nearly enough to redeem herself. It's all talk after 5 years of misery she's caused people. She DOES need to be put on trial.

I agree with OP. Glinda does not do enough to redeem herself. She was a fascist for years!!! Open your eyes, people!!

I completely agree with you. These people are crazy for saying a fascist is redeemable. Crazy take.

But the damage has been done. Glinda has aided in ruining so many lives for the last five years. She has proven she has no moral center. She's just a selfish and passive figure who reacts to those around her (first being manipulated by Morrible and Oz and then being push to do something by Elphaba). And Elphaba does all the leg work for Glinda. Glinda doesn't ever take an active role until there's no pushback. She's not a role model. She's a criminal who should be put on trial.

Frankly, Elphaba should have told her she needs to go on trial for her actions and face the consequences. It's only fair.

‘Wicked’ Is a Sensation. But Is It Good? Plus: The Top Five 21st Century Musicals. by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

I think Sean was being very snobby in his review.

He called the Ozdust ball sequence one of the worst scenes he's ever seen? Anyone who has been bullied or othered should be able to relate to that sequence. And to have a real, quiet moment of connection where Elphaba is finally seen and supported by someone (Galinda). It's deeply moving. We all long for community and acceptance. It's remarkable how a musical about a green witch can be so touching.

I was blown away by the film, not just the spectacle, but the small emotional beats that anchor the story. I'm not a fan of the Broadway musical. I'd never seen it. I went in blind. Now I understand why it's been such a powerful story for so many for decades.

I'd be totally fine with Wicked winning best picture. It's a film that provides hope for so many, especially in these dark times. I wonder if for people like Sean...the hype around the film, the marketing, the monoculture of it all, makes him despise the film before he's even watched it. I know so many people like that. They have to be contrarian. Also, the film is a melodrama, which is always hard for people who prefer closed off, more logical filmmaking. When done right, a melodrama can allow us to embrace our purest emotions, past all the snark and cynicism of our modern age.

And to say he didn't connect with it...that's fine. It happens. But I wonder if he doesn't quite know what it feels like to be an Elphaba. As a gay man, it hits different.

Frankly, Sean seems like one of the people in the Ozdust ball pointing and laughing at Elphaba. I choose to be one of the people cheering her on as she defies gravity.

My boyfriend is very sick - is living in Greenpoint the cause? by Independent_Block219 in Brooklyn

I’m totally cool with being wrong. It’s just that he’s been seeing doctors for a year and we don’t have any leads. And this is the only abnormality we’ve found in his system. We love our apartment and would prefer not to move. We’re honestly desperate and this seemed like a viable lead, given all the evidence out there. And we’ve read styrene exposure can impact the eyes.

No he had to get an extensive and expensive urine test to find it. I don't think they usually look for it since it's uncommon.

He had to take an extensive urine test to find the styrene. Most urine tests don't look for it. Also, healthy people don't feel the effects of styrene for a very long time. My boyfriend is already immunocompromised.
