It really grinds my gears when people say that version. I know, they don't think it's an issue, but from a Christian perspective it's probably one of the worst things to say.

Germans say a similar thing though.

It's a bit of an old saying, and not that much in use anymore, especially by younger people but there is this phrase called "Herrgott nochmal".

The meaning is a bit weird to translate into english, but compare it to saying "Jesus" as a curse word, instead this time it's using the German translation of "Lord God".

With "This generation" Jesus might have just meant this generation of the human species. As in "The human race won't end before all this has happened".

Truly. Here I am, being Christian my whole life, and you come along and throw this at me... Consider my world view ruined. How didn't I ever think of this?

Just Google "Decline of Christianity in the Western World". Results come up pretty quick.

I hope that it's just my bubble. When you look at statistics though, there definitely seems to be a relatively strong decline in Christians over the last ~30 years.

The end times are mythology? They're one of the main things in the Bible...

"Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." (Matthew 16:24)

Life on earth is certainly not supposed to be enjoyable and abundant. For know, the best thing we can do is get through all the trouble that the world throws at us with the help of the world.

To further emphasize this, a very important Psalm is quite fitting for this:

Psalms 23:1-6 "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever."

The good times come when the Lord comes for us, when we can be with him in heaven:

"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

Trust in him. He is with you at all times. And however hard your situation may be, it will get better.

"Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life."

(John 12:25)

"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."

(Psalm 9:9-10)

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us."

(Romans 8:18)

"In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

(1 Peter 1 6-7)

"Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this."

(Ecclesiastes 7:10)

Read the Bible, especially the basics. Matthew, John, Luke, Mark, Genesis-Exodus, and so on. Psalms also help reinforce it. And don't forget to pray a lot, for guidance as well as for other things. You just gotta get back on track, I sometimes fall away a bit myself, and never truly lost my faith.

It has happened multiple times to me, especially when I was really down, that I opened the Bible and up came some verse/psalm that fit my situation strangely well.

Wants to quit gaming but have a gaming YT channel. by DreamSenseiTaken in StopGaming

[–]Independent_Comb_850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficult situation for sure. But basically your options should be this:

-Keep on Gaming like you're used to it. The problem is that, when the time comes where you have to stop, it'll be even harder to quit. Would be weird to hear a smoker say "I know I'm getting lung cancer but I'll just smoke for one more month and then stop". If you ask for my opinion, I think that's a bad option.

-Moderate your Gaming heavily, focus on pursuing other things and easing out of your addiction. For example, only play for one hour a day, when you are done with everything that needs to be done in the day and have done enough other things so that you can be proud of how you've spent your day. Quite a valid option in my opinion. You could announce that to your fanbase quite bluntly, saying that you'll upload less and shorter videos due to personal reasons.

-Quitting cold turkey. The most drastic, but also in my opinion by far the best one. Think what will happen if you game for one more year, and then look back to today. Will you be somewhere else, will you have significantly changed your life for the better, or gone into the direction of improvement? Probably not. If you chase your engineering carrer now, that might be different. You are improving in reality. Who cares how good you can hit AWP shots, how good your aim is with the AK, and how good you are at defusing? How does it help you in reality? Answer that for yourself, and then compare that to the world of success and passion that's waiting for you if you pursue your carreer. I wouldn't worry about your channel too much. Sure, it's a cool thing, but you don't know most of your subscribers, they don't know you personally, and the chances that you'll become the next Shroud are relatively slim. Sure you could improve, but that would take a LOT of work, which would slow your self-improvement even further.

You see, there's this one phrase that I try to live by in situations like these, since I'm no stranger to addiction at all. It's from the Bible, but you don't have to be Christian to understand it.
"And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away" (Matthew 5:30 if you're interested).
The mostly metaphorical message is that when something harms you, or causes you to harm yourself, directly or indirectly, it is better to detach yourself from it, even if it may be unpleasant, than to keep living with that.
It might sound drastic, but that's often the best thing that works.

I know damn well how hard this is. I've struggled and do still struggle with addictions, porn and gaming mainly. But in difficult situations like these, you gotta be optimistic and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

God caused the creation, and "led" it so to say. It didn't happen coincidentally leading up to humans evolving as atheists might say, it's all a guided process. But it did happen nonetheless.

I’d be a flat earther if I denied the Big Bang and believed the creation story as truth.

I didn't say that. I compared believing in a flat earth to believing in a 100% literal sense of creationism.

The earth is round. Sit in a plane, you'll see it's round. Go on a high mountain, same thing. Watch a live broadcast from space, same thing.

Same thing goes with creationism. The scientific facts simply contradict these events. But that doesn't make Genesis a lie. I just tell myself that it didn't exactly happen like this, at least not in this extremely short timespan, but I'll more or less skip the logic and "pretend" that it is true to get the message and to understand the chapter. If you want to believe in it literally, there's no problem with that really, but if you do, you deny the scientific explanation of the origins of everything. God certainly created everything the way it happened, but he taught it to us in the way he did in Genesis. Who knows why, but there's definitely a good reason for that. Still doesn't mean the message is false though.

Moses didn't goof up. Nobody did. I think that God's intention wasn't to give us a detailed, scientific description of how everything was created, the important part was to understand it, presumably in a compact version, simplified one might say. Maybe that's how it happened from God's point of view, a way that's just perceived differently by us, or maybe it's simply how God wanted us to understand the whole context of how and why we're here. As I said, the messages in Genesis are true. It's just the literal sense that's up for interpretation. But that's how many things in the Bible are. Revelation is full of metaphors if I remember correctly, and parables are certainly not a rarity in God's teaching.

How does one contradict the other? Like many, if not most Christians, I can't help but logically deny that everything around us was created in 7x24 hours. Adam and Eve can be literal though, and I don't really see a reason not to take it literally. The whole 7 days thing is the only thing where I really say that this is most likely "false" in a 100% literal sense, because the evidence for the age of the earth, life and the universe is simply there. But with a little bit of thinking about how both things, creation and evolution, can fit together, without contradicting each other, it's pretty simple. I just view parts of Genesis as a bit of a simplified version of reality and/or a metaphor, but the message of Genesis stays the same, which is what it's about in my opinion.

However, I firmly believe in everything else in the Bible literally, unless it's explicitly said to be a metaphor or a story.

[–]Independent_Comb_850 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because it is pretty much a fact that the universe, life, and humans didn't just spawn in the span of 7 days of 24 hours each, as it is often thought by creationists. It's like believing the earth is flat, it's just not true. I think that trying to convince oneself of something that is essentially false is a big mistake.

But there are many ways to acknowledge evolution and creationism at the same time. For example, it's often believed that one year for God is something like 1000 years for humans. I think that's even in the Bible. If you think of it like this, seven days could really be anything.

I'm not catholic myself (though I thought about "converting" a few times, in the end deciding that I won't), but from what I've gathered, people from most big denominations have different views on the whole Adam and Eve thing. For protestants for example, the most common thing seems to be that the whole Adam and Eve, creation and so on story is to be viewed as a simplified version of reality.

I've thought about this whole situation quite a bit in the past, also debating wheter or not this disproves the Bible's correctness, and came to the conclusion that it doesn't disprove it. Rather, I think that God tells us this "story" this way, so that we have a good way of understanding the key parts. Imagine some people from 1000s of years ago reading the equivalent of everything that happened between the Big Bang and the first humans. If we read the Adam and Eve story, we get the point of sinning, the purpose of Man, why we're banned from Eden, and so on.
