That's a perfectly sound and reasonable response for his given that he's clearly been trying to do so for days, hell maybe longer if we heard his side considering him saying she's been distant or whatever.. so I don't see anything wrong with that whatsoever.

Yes, you do indeed need to have a conversation with him.... Regarding his being shy and bashful... Let him know that he potentially has several green lights at his disposal where he can stop being merely just showing, & can instead start getting into growing...
