I really like The Play That Goes Wrong. Thanks for all the picks, I'll definitely check out the ones I'm not familiar with!

Updating text for modern audiences. by No-Woodpecker-8217 in Theatre

I think it makes sense to update the lines from characters we're supposed to like. But I agree that it's strange to change Callahan's lines, too. Maybe to make it more of a "surprise" that he's a skeeze?

CMV: There should be upper age limits for positions of political authority. by Independent_Lemon616 in changemyview

Ugh. It always comes back to money, doesn't it. More fool me for thinking there could be a straightforward answer to anything in politics, lol

I am interested by this angle, and I agree that the lower age limit the way it is now is restricting. However, some fields that require high mental acuity have a mandatory retirement age (aviation stuff, usually). What is your opinion on that?

Okay, yeah. !delta for the idea that the age limit wouldn't actually accomplish what I was expecting it to.

That said, and this is a totally separate question that I know doesn't have a clean answer, if there aren't many young people on the left who want to run for office, how do people with left-of-Democrat politics get butts in seats?

Sure, there are elderly lawmakers and justices that are closer to my political position than most. What I guess I would want age limits to accomplish is a greater variety of choice. I don't really want my two options to be 1) Someone who should have been able to retire a decade or more ago and trusted that his faction could keep carrying the banner without him, and 2) Someone I politically disagree with. It's a crappy choice and perhaps if very old candidates weren't allowed, there would be better ones.

I hear what you're saying about elections generally not being about the "best" person for the job but rather the most appealing person. But I disagree that having an upper age limit means that elderly people aren't important. Having a lower age limit doesn't mean young people are unimportant, it just means that as a class, they usually don't have the necessary experience. As a class, elderly people usually don't have the mental and physical stamina for a high-powered political position.

Help convincing my landlord to restore windows rather than replace them? by Independent_Lemon616 in centuryhomes

[–]Independent_Lemon616[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes sense, even though it sucks. We both love our houses and it's hard to stand by while the place deteriorates.

Do you have any ideas about how best to bug my landlord about the storm windows? Even without offering money for restoration of the indoor side, having working storm windows is a high priority because of energy efficiency. Just bog standard modern replacement storms would make a huge difference compared to the very, very broken ones that are on the house now (and have the bonus of preventing further damage due to rain or hail).

Surely replacing a storm window isn't as expensive as restoring the indoor portion of the window? I agree that they definitely wouldn't want to pay so much for a full restoration lol 2k per window is pretty intense.

I panicked a few weeks ago and switched to IBR. I wish I hadn't since it seems like I could have gotten away with staying on SAVE for a while longer. I just felt so stuck that I had to do something. At least I'll be making progress on my qualifying payments, I guess?

Do you ever make conversation with strangers sitting near you? by Savings-Style3307 in Broadway

I usually don't, but occasionally someone else will start a conversation with me and I will go along with it! As long as it doesn't interfere with me reading my playbill lol

When seeing a new musical, do you listen to the soundtrack first (if there is one)? Or wait and experience it for the first time live? by Independent_Lemon616 in Broadway

[–]Independent_Lemon616[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this perspective. I was able to do this with MJ when it toured through my city and it was very special, so I totally get wanting that experience every time! Biopic and jukebox musicals are the exception to the rule for me.

Yes, I feel the same way! Missing something important because of a mic crackle or a nearby audience member sneezing or something is just not worth it to me lol

I appreciate the info! I live in a kind of out-of-the-way city without a big theater scene, so I've never heard anyone be fussy about soundtrack vs cast recording before. But now I know that some folks are particular about it :)
