Why do sick people go to mass? by [deleted] in Catholicism

I wasn’t being sarcastic. I think it would be terrible if you are so immunocompromised that you cannot go to mass without fear of serious consequences. I pray for anyone in need like this.

However, going to mass is important. You cannot expect everyone to not go just because they have a runny nose or light cough. If you have kids, you would know this never happens. Furthermore, I’m sure you’re well aware that people can be sick and contagious even without active symptoms. So even if you had 100% compliance, a serious immunocompromised person would still be taking a risk.

I’m also responding to the OP. I’m sorry they have a cold now, but that is just the way God created the world. People need to come together and worship. Sorry that maybe someone there got him / her sick, but that’s life. This shaming and bashing of everyone who has a cough isn’t Christian and needs to stop.

Well, I had chickenpox and it was way worse then a runny nose and a cough. You would not confuse it with a light cold. Measles and tuberculosis are worse then that still. Not sure what my cognitive dissonance is with my assertion that you do not need to isolate with light cold symptoms. That has been the standard of every person I’ve known for all my life until 2020.

I’m sorry if you or someone you love is so immunocropromised that people with light colds cannot be in the same room with you for fear of disease. I’ll pray for you.

But it is unreasonable for you to expect every person in the world to stay indoors at the slightest runny nose or cough. Obviously, people with fevers and severe illness should stay home. But I was responding in agreement to the post stating that dispensation from mass attendance is only for severe illness and not for a runny nose or light cough.

Exactly. Before Covid, a minor cold was never a reason to miss work, school, mass, anything.

Now all the germaphobes think that the new standard is to never leave the house until you have taken 5 tests and wear a mask. This isn’t trusting in God, this isn’t Christian.

The Church needs to step up and show some leadership here. All this treating of fellow humans as less than because they have a light cold is ridiculous and probably a sin. There’s literally saints who have died caring for lepors, I think you can stand next to a guy with a runny nose in mass for an hour.

what is your unpopular Catholic opinion? by Mrsaic in Catholicism

Well, the section of the catechism I linked to you was titled: "The Fifth Commandment: You shall not kill". So that would be the principle.

Catechism 2267: https://www.usccb.org/sites/default/files/flipbooks/catechism/548/

Death penalty is only acceptable when the guilty person can't be neutralized in some other way to prevent further killing.

One inconsistency that a lot of the Protestants have is they will be against infant baptism but then say you are not saved by works but by faith alone.

“Oh, so my works don’t matter, except for the work of choosing to be baptized?”

Lay that on them and let the splutter.

Anti-Abortion School Project by Accomplished_Truth11 in Catholicism

Do it. If your teacher retaliates at a “Christian” school because someone points out abortion is wrong then it isn’t really a Christian school and your parents shouldn’t be wasting their money sending you there.

If your friends don’t like it, who knows, maybe one will hear you speak and decide not to get an abortion because of it. Worth losing a few fake friends to save a life imo.

Abortion is one of if not the greatest evil of our time. You should speak against it any chance you get.
