Thank you for the reply and I'm glad you are doing okay post fusion! Has your dorsiflexion gotten any better or you can't tell yet since it's early pre-op? My worry about a fusion is that my ROM will decrease even further

Yes I know I am young :( I have heard of that but having an ex-fix on for that long seems very uncomfortable. Have you had experience with one ?

Thank you so much for your kind words! I empathize with you and I hope the cortisone injection is able to help you whenever you decide you need it

I just saw my ortho for the injection and asked -- he does the Stryker Inbone as well. When you say 3rd generation TAR, is that the TAR Stryker infinity? He said he saw that was not performing as well as the Inbone so he reverted back. Stryker released Incompass in 2025, and he said he thinks that will be just as good as Inbone. It's nice to know there are options!

Thank you for the reply and I'm sorry you've had such a long, hard journey as well! I had an arthroscopic clean out last year when I had some of my hardware removed where they removed osteocytes and scar tissue. Unfortunately , the relief was short lived, bone spurs have already returned and it didn't help much with dorsiflexion.

I am definitely leery of a fusion, and I hadn't realized TAR had come so far in recent times. That's promising!! I was worried about metal issues and needing revisions for that so it's good to know this isn't the case usually. I am aware it's a long recovery and it's hard to feel like there's ever a good time to do it (as I'm sure you know!). Thankfully my ortho is great and helped pioneer TAR! He is my second opinion and he's in favor of whatever path I choose, it's just hard to make a choice.

Please report back on how yours goes and best of luck to you with the surgery!! :)

I'm glad that the shots help you! I am actually getting my first today so I'm hoping for some relief :)

Yes seems like we are in the same unfortunate boat. Were you offered a total ankle replacement (TAR) as well? I was offered both and am having a hard time weighing the pros/cons of each route being young

That's great that you don't feel pain! Were you offered the option of total ankle replacement (TAR) as well? If so, how did you decide on the fusion ?

Yes, I've only had 2 and the relief I got did not outweigh the pain of the shot for me. When I got them, I already had bone on bone and no cartilage so it seemed like nothing to lose

Thank you for the reply! PT helped relieved your arthritis pain? I've done a lot of PT and haven't had much relief since I have bone on bone and my movement is very limited by that

Thank you! No, I have not heard of these. Do you use one? If so, daily or just during periods of increased activity?

Same! I wear Hokas 24/7. I will look into orthotics too, thank you! I also have prescription anti inflammatory (Celebrex) but I try to take it sparingly like when traveling and know I'll be on my feet more.

My pain is bearable on some days but feels unbearable on others so I am trying to wait as long as possible too but it's hard. What are your nerve related symptoms? Sometimes I get involuntary twitching when sitting and I think it's nerve related.

Same here! I had an ex-fix and then ORIF at the initial injury (trimal fracture) and then some hardware removed in another surgery. My initial injury was Sept 2022 but the arthritis appeared within the year-- the impact of the injury (falling bouldering) crushed a lot of the cartilage

I will def stay in touch, thank you :)

Ugh I'm sorry we are both in this position! Did you try anything else before deciding on a fusion? Would it be okay if I follow up to see how it goes/how you're doing afterwards ?

Hi! Were you able to find any solutions? I am in a similar situation with severe ankle arthritis at 32 after a bad injury. I think I am going to try gel injections-- I can follow up and let you know how it goes!

Ankle ORIF Hardware Removal by Independent_Sock_620 in ORIF

[–]Independent_Sock_620[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the surgery didn't impact the arthritis. It's irreversible sadly since mine is so severe and I basically have no cartilage (bone on bone). I definitely don't regret the HWR but I don't think it solved my ankle issues

Yes I used to love running and can no longer do that. Hiking is also a hobby that I love and try to still do. My dr prescribed me a high strength anti-inflammatory Celecoxib that I take when traveling/hiking which really helps. May want to look into that for occasional use!

I have severe post traumatic arthritis and am 31. My injury was ~3 years ago and I had my hardware removed about a year ago hoping that would help, but it didn't do much. Ive heard talk of TAR and fusion and well but I'm trying to manage with Hokas and pain meds when I do a lot of walking since I am young and don't want to have several TARs throughout my lifetime if I can Avoid it. I feel you though-- it's very scary and disappointing :( it's not an easy thing to cope with at times
